Ukiyo-e Overview from Phil Hansen

Traditional Japanese woodblock printing is revived
SHOTLIST
Matsumoto, Kyoto - January, 2008
1. Close of print 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa' by Hokusai (1830)
2. Various close of print by Hiro Shige showing a woman in a Kimono by the Sumida river (1847-52)
3. Wide of print showing three women
4. Close of print showing man's face
5. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Sakai Nobuo, curator, Japan Ukiyo-e Museum in Matsumoto
Rather than a single individual, they were made by a group of people and this is unlike other art forms. Oil paintings, traditional Japanese and Chinese water colors, for example, are painted by a single artist, but with ukiyo-e (block printing) the process is more complex.
6. Various of Takenaka Kenji at work
7. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Takenaka Kenji, woodblock printer
This is the famous work by Hokusai called the 'Great Wave'. It depicts a rough sea off the coast of Kanagawa from a view point where it was possible to see Mt Fuji. Hokusai would first draw an out line which would then be placed directly onto a woodblock which an engraver would then use as a guide. The original picture would of course be destroyed in the process. The final result of the engraver's work would be a printing block like this.
8. Various of blue water based paint being brushed onto wood
9. Various of print being applied to paper
10. Various of print without colours
11. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Sakai Nobuo, curator Japan Ukiyo-e Museum in Matsumoto
The out line would be carved alone by a master engraver. This is the most difficult part of the engraving process, but once completed the blocks used to print the colour could be produced quite easily by apprentices. A printer would normally work alone.
12. Mid of Takenaka Kenji at work
13. Various of Takenaka Kenji applying gradations of colour to a print
14. Various of Kenji showing how the impression of spray and the movement of water on print
15. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Sakai Nobuo, curator Japan Ukiyo-e Museum in Matsumoto
The pictures depicted women's fashion showing the latest kimonos, they depicted Kabuki actors, the equivalent of today's movie stars. Describing contemporary fashion the pictures had a similar function to today's television (and advertising industries.)
16. Picture by Kunisada depicting a woman using a make up mirror (1800s)
17. Portrait of a woman during the early 1800s (by Eisen an artist who specialised in women's fashion)
18. Various of scene in a bathhouse by Ikkeisai Yoshiiku (1868)
19. Close of a fight between two women in bathhouse
20. Various of assistant to artist Daniel Kelly making a print using a technique inspired by traditional Japanese woodblock printing
21. Various example of Kelly's work
22. Set up of Daniel Kelly supervising work
23. SOUNDBITE: (English) Daniel Kelly, painter and woodblock printer
So if you think about Van Gough he was highly influenced by the colours of woodblock prints. He described colour without getting the full spectrum of black and white that was in the Rembrandt period. So there was a huge change with the impressionists ,of getting rid of the dark dull colours of Rembrandt's era and brightening their pallet.
24. Tilt down of Shokoku Takimeguri (Waterfalls of all provinces) Hokusai (1833)
25. Close of print
26. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Takenaka Kenji, woodblock printer
It is work performed by a group of people. I think that it is because of this that the work has it's particular character. It is the product of the input of a group of people who were consciously thinking about what images would be popular. I think that is why so much good work was produced.
27. Close of print entitled 'Snow on the Sumida River' by Hiro Shige (around 1830)
