Ixiim Cooking School in San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala
There may not be many Guatemalan restaurants around the world, but that doesn't mean they don't have signature dishes. Learn all about the significance of corn in Mayan culture, and how to prepare pepian, rellenitos, and jamaica tea. Our personal favorite food to make at Ixiim Cooking School were traditional tortillas.

Guatemala Food Cooking School in Antigua, Guatemala:
Guatemala Food Cooking School is an immersive cultural experience for the culinary adventurers out there who are visiting Antigua, Guatemala. I was fortunate enough to be a part of the Guatemala Food Cooking Class as part of my volunteer trip with Vivid Roots & Hopscotch the Globe. While in Antigua, we did a walking tour and learned how to cook authentic Guatemalan Food. Some of the Guatemalan dishes that we prepared and ate were Jocón, Rellenitos, Elote Loco (crazy corn), fresh corn tortillas, traditional Guatemalan tostadas, Guatemalan style rice & more.
This was an amazing experience to have in Guatemala with a wonderful group of people. Not only was it a great bonding time with the group of volunteers, but it was also a great learning environment. After a few drinks and some music, we danced our way through the kitchen and were ready to eat the Guatemalan food we had just prepared ourselves. This was definitely a night to remember.

Making Tortillas in Guatemala
As part of the oral history project, Misterios, La Casa de La Mente, we had an opportunity to speak with a San Juan la Laguna spiritual leader about her work. Following the interview, she invited us to make tortillas with her.
Misterios, La Casa de La Mente is an oral history project documenting the lives of the ancianos living in San Juan la Laguna. This Tz'utujil Mayan community is on the shores of Lake Atitlan in the Western Highlands of Guatemala.
The project was initiated by Fredy Perez Hernandez and Nicholas Beatty, and more information can be found at
