Hiking the Lady Bird Johnson Grove
A hike through Redwood National Parks Lady Bird Johnson Grove in September of 2015. This is one of the most popular trails in Redwood National Park. Park rangers often recommend it to visitors since it's short, level, and close to Kuchel Visitor Center.
Unusually for a major redwood attraction, the trail is in a redwood upland environment at 1200 feet above sea level. Such ridgetop or hillside groves are usually less spectacular than valley floor groves, with smaller trees and more shrubs that block views of the trees. However, the trail was built for Redwood National Park's dedication ceremony, and I suppose the uplands provided a brighter, more cheerful environment for the ceremony.
The grove is free of traffic noise. Because of its elevation, it's often in the clouds and gets a lot more fog than lowland groves.
Lady Bird Johnson Grove and more around Redwoods NP - Oct 21, 2015
Our day spent driving up to Orick CA, Lady Bird Johnson Grove, the beach area of Redwoods National park and Trinidad California.
Orick California and Redwood National Park Tour 2016
Orick California and Redwood National Park are located just minutes away from Trinidad California. This video was filmed on a day trip from Turtle Rocks Oceanfront Inn, a great place to stay for seeing everything in the region.
The beautiful Redwood National Park visitor center is located right on the beach near the entrance to the city of Orick, just past Freshwater lagoon.
This is the gateway to explore old growth redwood forests (such as Lady Bird Johnson grove, big tree) as well as sights such as Fern Canyon and Prairie Creek Redwoods states park.
Redwood National Park also features the tallest tree in the world.
Redwoods Nat'l Park: Ladybird Johnson Grove
Hike through the Redwoods at Ladybird Johnson Grove in the Redwood National Park in Northern California (near Orick, CA). The trail happened to have a walking tour led by park ranger that day who was very informative. The images do not really do justice to the size of the trees and the forest. Interesting to see the second growth trees at one part of the hike, the Redwood National Park is mostly a restoration park, as the ranger explained, most of it has already been logged over, so its mostly second growth trees. Only select groves of old growth still exist in the National Park. Most of the bigger trees are Coastal Redwoods, though some may be large fir or spruce trees as well.

Redwood National Park, Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail - Park Travel review
Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail was our first stop of the morning on our first day in Redwood National Park. In stopping at the Visitor Center, we found out that there was a Ranger Talk at Ladybird Johnson Grove where there was old growth forest. We headed up to wait for the ranger and get the lay of the land. The fog was thick and we were worried that the views would be lacking. That was NOT the case. The fog only enhanced the views! We are thrilled that this trail was part of our travels to America's National Parks!
Trail Description of Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail from the NPS website: Situated around the dedication site of Redwood National Park, this moderate walk winds through stands of old-growth redwood, Douglas-fir, and tanoak. A brochure at the trailhead corresponds to marked posts along the trail and guides you along this historically significant route. In spring, rhododendrons and azaleas abound, and during the autumn months, vine and big-leaf maple reveal their bold colors.

Old-growth redwood forest, Lady Bird Johnson Grove in 3D. Coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) trees grow in the fog belt of coastal northern California. These clips accompany a video of a bicycle ride from the Redwood Creek trail-head (elevation 50 feet) to the Redwood Creek overlook (2100 feet):
The Lady Bird Johnson grove is 3 miles from US Highway 101, so one of a few quiet, old-growth, coast redwood groves. The Bald Hills Road intersects Highway 101 a mile north of Orick, California. The view from the overlook is beautiful, this day obscured by fog.

The Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP) are located in the United States, along the coast of northern California. Comprising Redwood National Park (established 1968) and California's Del Norte Coast, Jedediah Smith, and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Parks (dating from the 1920s), the combined RNSP contain 133,000 acres (540 km2).[3] Located entirely within Del Norte and Humboldt Counties, the four parks, together, protect 45% of all remaining coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) old-growth forests, totaling at least 38,982 acres (157.75 km2). These trees are the tallest and one of the most massive tree species on Earth. In addition to the redwood forests, the parks preserve other indigenous flora, fauna, grassland prairie, cultural resources, portions of rivers and other streams, and 37 miles (60 km) of pristine coastline.More Info:
