Almost 1,200 Dams Across NC Considered 'High Hazard'
BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. -- About 1,200 dams in North Carolina are considered to be a high hazard, meaning if they fail people could die. A News 13 review of hundreds of pages of dam inspections in the mountains found officials documented the same problems every year. They send letters to dam owners demanding fixes and threatening fines, but sometimes fixes are never made. I think it took a little too long to react to the state's concerns, neighbor to Lake Tomahawk Tom Woodbury said. Woodbury also owns rentals below the Ridgecrest Lake dam, where inspectors noted problems including minor erosion. He said he wants the state to do more. Nobody is telling us, you know, you have all these houses, all these people, all these children and everyone living below a dam that could go, Woodbury said. There are nine dams in Buncombe County the state says are both in poor condition and high hazard, meaning if they failed someone could be killed. Dam failures have happened in the mountains. Thirty-five feet of the dam at Lake Susan failed in 2004, leading to home evacuations. Almost 40 years ago, four people died when a dam in the Newfound area failed. In Black Mountain, the fix at Lake Tomahawk cost 0,000. The dam is now as safe as it's ever been, Black Mountain Town Manager Matt Settlemyer assured. I think the state wants the dams to be safe and wants people to be notified if there is an issue with a dam, and so as long as you are working with them through the process, there's a lot of pieces to the puzzle here, Settlemyer said. Woodbury says people living near dams should be told more about how that puzzle is being solved. I guess the biggest part was we weren't notified that there were problems; I had to find it out my self, Woodbury said. News 13 spoke to Toby Vinson with the North Carolina Dam Safety Program in Raleigh over the phone. He said the law doesn't require his office to notify nearby property owners about problems at dams. The state could use fines to force more dam owners to make repairs, and it often threatens them, up to 00 a day. But Vinson said the state would rather see owners use that money for repairs.

Big Tom Wilson explains the search for Dr. Elisha Mitchell in the Black Mountains
Dr. Elisha Mitchell disappeared in the Black Mountains of North Carolina on June 27, 1857. It was in early July that Big Tom Wilson and a small search party found Dr. Mitchell's body in the bottom of a pool near the mountain that was named for him.
Dr. Mitchell, at the time of his death, had been remeasuring the elevation of North Carolina's highest peak, Mount Mitchell, the peak that had been named after him. Mount Mitchell, at 2,037 metres (6,684 feet) is the highest peak of the Appalachian Mountains and the highest peak in the eastern United States.
This historical presentation is located in the Mount Mitchell State Park's Natural History Museum near the Stone Observation Tower on the mountain's summit. Mount Mitchell State Park is 698.9 hectares (1,727 acres) in size and is accessible via the Blue Ridge Parkway from nearby Asheville, North Carolina.

6-Year-Old Dies Of Rocky Mtn. Spotted Fever
Not long ago, Emilee Russell finished Kindergarten and had so much to look forward to. Her teacher at Black Mountain Primary says sudden illness took her prized pupil away. She died Wednesday of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever after being bit by a tick while visiting family in Texas. She passed away at Louisiana State University Hospital. This is the best memories that I have of Miss Emily. Where she was happy and smiling, says Ashley Styles, opening the gate to the school playground. She would sit right there on that little red bench and take it all in and enjoy it, Styles recalls. It's hard to think that she's gone. Emilee's dad is a battalion chief at Black Mountain fire department. Chief Steve Jones says the little girl was there frequently with twin brother Charles. Just... that pretty little smile... she could just look at you with that smile and break your heart, Chief Jones says. Her teacher hopes there's a lesson in this story that may save lives.I definitely want people to be more aware of what a small tick bite can do, Styles says. There are two fundraisers planned to help raise money for Emilee's family to cover medical expenses. The first is a Spaghetti Supper, hosted by the fire department at the Lakeview Center on June 21st.There's also a Day For Emilee at Lake Tomahawk Park on July 6th, organized by Styles.
