Whitney Plantation - My Reaction!!!
My wife, who is working on her PhD in African-American studies requested that we visit the Whitney Plantation as her Christmas gift. I must admit, her request was not the most appealing to me, but we took the long drive to Wallace, LA anyway. Little did I know that this experience would change me forever!
Website:
Go on in. You have to go inside. When you walk in that space you can't deny what happened to these people. You can feel it, touch it, smell it.
-Mitch Landrieu, Mayor of New Orleans-
...I am changed. I see now more clearly than ever, the dots across the timeline of history that led to our current situation of racism and the effect that it has across an entire community and nation.
- Mr. Sydney Lent -visitor 3.11.13
Within the boundaries of the “Habitation Haydel”, as the Whitney Plantation was originally known, the story of the Haydel family of German immigrants and the slaves that they held were intertwined.
In 2014, the Whitney Plantation opened its doors to the public for the first time in its 262 year history as the only plantation museum in Louisiana with a focus on slavery.
Through museum exhibits, memorial artwork and restored buildings and hundreds of first-person slave narratives, visitors to Whitney will gain a unique perspective on the lives of Louisiana's enslaved people.
History:
The Whitney Plantation, originally known as Habitation Haydel, is located less than an hour from New Orleans, on the historic River Road in Wallace, Louisiana. Ambroise Heidel (1702-ca.1770), the founder of this plantation, emigrated from Germany to Louisiana with his mother and siblings in 1721. He became a modest farmer on the east bank with, at one time, a single pig for livestock. In 1752 Ambroise bought the original land tract of this plantation and became a wealthy owner engaged in the business of indigo. Jean Jacques Haydel Sr. (Heidel’s younger child) transitioned the plantation from Indigo to sugar in the early 1800's before passing it to future generations. After the Civil War (1867) the plantation was sold to Bradish Johnson of New York, who named the property after his grandson Harry Whitney.
In 1946, in the middle of one of the many shifts in ownership, the Big House on the plantation was described as “one of the most interesting in the entire South” by Charles E. Peterson, senior landscape architect of the United States Department of the Interior. According to Jay Edwards, a professor of anthropology and an historian of architecture at Louisiana State University, the Big House is one of the finest surviving examples of Spanish Creole architecture and one of the earliest raised Creole cottages in Louisiana. Moreover, it is one of the very few Historic American houses known to have received decorative wall paintings on both its exterior and its interior. Whitney Plantation is also significant because of the number of its historic outbuildings which were added to the site over the years, thus providing a unique perspective on the evolution of the Louisiana working plantation.
The Whitney Plantation Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places. Whitney Plantation is a genuine landmark built by African slaves and their descendants. As a site of memory and consciousness, the Whitney Plantation Museum is meant to pay homage to all slaves on the plantation itself and to all of those who lived elsewhere in the US South.
Laurel Leff - Buried by The Times
Almost as soon as mass killing of the Jews began in mid-1941, reports of massacres began to spread in the west. Within a year, various sources were providing allied governments and the media with strong evidence and eyewitness testimony detailing the killing campaign and the death camps. But while the genocide continued and even after the defeat of Germany brought this campaign to a close, the Holocaust was consistently under-reported in the western media. The tendency to ignore or minimize the evidence that a campaign of genocide was underway extended even to the New York Times, the most prominent and influential newspaper in the United States.
In her talk, Laurel Leff discusses why the Times devoted so little coverage to reports that the Jews of Europe were being systematically annihilated. Professor Leff teaches journalism at Northeastern University. She is the author of Buried by The Times -- The Holocaust and America's Most Important Newspaper (Cambridge, 2005). Of this work, David S. Wyman, the preeminent historian of American policy regarding European Jewry during World War II, has written, This is the best book yet about American media coverage of the Holocaust, as well as an extremely important contribution to our understanding of America's response to the mass murder of the Jews.
At Oregon State University, we have observed Holocaust Memorial Week every year since 1987. The breadth and the duration of our effort are unmatched in the Pacific Northwest. This program grows from the belief that educational institutions can do much to combat prejudice of all kinds, and to foster respect for the diversity that is America, by promoting an awareness of the Holocaust, perhaps the most horrific historical indicator of the high cost of prejudice. It is particularly important to teach young people about the Holocaust, so that coming generations will not forget the lessons that a preceding one learned at such cost. This emphasis recalls the motto of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum: For the dead and the living, we must bear witness.

Happy Thanksgiving from The Mayflower Ship in Plymouth, Massachusetts
Happy Thanksgiving holiday season from the Mayflower II 17th-century 1620 Pilgrim ship in Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA
The Mayflower was the ship that in 1620 transported mostly English Puritans and Separatists, collectively known today as the Pilgrims, from Plymouth England to the New World. There were 102 passengers and the crew is estimated to be approximately 30 but the exact number is unknown. This voyage has become an iconic story in some of the earliest annals of American history, with its story of death and of survival in the harsh New World winter environment. The culmination of the voyage in the signing of the Mayflower Compact is an event which established a rudimentary form of democracy, with each member contributing to the welfare of the community.

Cold Spring Harbor, New York
Cold Spring Harbor was named after the naturally cold freshwater springs that flow in the area. Its economy mainly tied to milling and port activities, it rose in prominence as a whaling community in the mid-nineteenth century. After the decline of whaling in the 1860s, it became a resort town with several hotels. In the 20th century it became known as the site of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, although the laboratory itself is located in the adjacent village of Laurel Hollow in Nassau County which was called Cold Spring, before incorporation.
Today it is primarily a bedroom community of New York City, with a small central business area running along Route 25A, and is home to many educational and cultural organizations: the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum, the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery and Aquarium, Dolan DNA Learning Center, the Uplands Farm Sanctuary (home of The Nature Conservancy's Long Island chapter), and a gallery run by the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities.
