Leon Sinks Geological Area Trail
Leon Sinks Geological Area in the Apalachicola Forest, Florida, is south of Tallahassee near Wakulla Springs. Florida's unique karst geology of sink holes, underground rivers and caves carved out of limestone, makes some very interesting parks. This is a 2.5 mile trail, and very enjoyable. The kids will enjoy it as well. Highly recommended as a family hiking trip.

Big Dismal Sink at Leon Sinks Geological Area
This is a very large sinkhole I found while exploring the trails at Leon Sinks Geological Area called Big Dismal. (Right off US 319 south of Tallahassee, the Leon Sinks Geological Area contains 5 miles of trails that lead to a series of sinkholes big and small. The land in this area is underlain by a layer of limestone, eroded and dissolved by rainwater and groundwater to form caverns, holes, and tunnels in the limestone. This type of terrain is called karst and results in many geological features such as wet sinkholes, depressions, natural bridges, and a disappearing stream.)

Herping the Apalachicola National Forest
We searched high and low for 5 days straight. After exhausting ourselves, and not finding our target species (alive), it's safe to say that this place has one of the highest densities of Pygmy Rattlesnakes in the southeast region.
