Japanese artist Shinji Ohmaki sets off 10 million bubbles
(3 Aug 2017) JAPANESE ARTIST SHINJI OHMAKI SETS OFF 10 MILLION BUBBLES
Japanese artist Shinji Ohmaki set off 10 million bubbles in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour on Wednesday (2 AUG. 2017) as a part of his Memorial Rebirth art installation.
The artist has been holding exhibitions across the world since 2000.
His Memorial Rebirth installation first began in 2008 in Yokohama, Japan. The installation consists of a three metre tall, six level bubble pyramid. 45 bubble machines are stacked up, each producing 10,000 bubbles per minute. Each session lasts between 15 to 20 minutes.
I hope to put space, time, memory and history together, combining and connecting them with soap bubbles, Ohmaki explained.
When bubbles are released, you see different colors, making it into a world of light. However, bubbles vanish in a second, disappearing from an existing object. Is it similar to our real world? he added.
Ohmaki has brought the installation to over 20 cities in various countries including Japan, Taiwan and Australia.
The biggest challenge is dealing with the weather, he said, but there is a lesson to be learned there.
No matter how a city is developed, wind is still there. Therefore, we hope the public will understand how humans and the environment are closely bound up, he said.
While children might not understand the meaning behind Ohmaki's installation, the sheer sight of bubbles was enough to excite them, which is exactly why 35-year-old art teacher Gigi Yu brought her daughter to the show.
(It's) not just about seeing art, but it is an art for everyone to play happily together, she said.
The Memorial Rebirth will run for 20 sessions between 2 and 20 August.

APT6 / Shinji Ohmaki discusses his art practice and 'Liminal air descend'
Shinji Ohmakis installations create absorbing and labyrinthine environments through a skilful deployment of repetition and scale, and the use of everyday materials such as flour, correction fluid, and thread. Often working with the architecture of the gallery, Ohmaki transforms spaces so that boundaries between the interior and exterior become blurred.
'Liminal air descend' 2006 combines masses of knotted thread, artificial light and architectural form to produce dramatic, immersive encounters. Inspired by the beauty of natural forms, Ohmakis works invite a sense of wonder and weightlessness, conveying the notion of infinity. The formal aesthetic structures of Japanese architecture and Zen gardens are also important points of departure for Ohmaki, as is their function as spaces for meditation and contemplation. Inspired by these architectures, Ohmaki transforms a discrete gallery space in the Gallery of Modern Art into a liminal zone, offering a profoundly physical experience in which audiences can consider perceptions of eternity and the sublime.
The Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) is QAGOMA's flagship international contemporary art event, and the only major exhibition series in the world to focus exclusively on the contemporary art of Asia, the Pacific and Australia.
APT6 included the work of more than 100 artists from 25 countries, including collaborations and collectives, which reflect the diversity of practices across Asia, the Pacific and Australia. APT6 has a number of specific focuses and thematic links while considering recent shifts in contemporary art in communities that have not been represented in the APT before, including works by artists from Tibet, North Korea (DPRK), Turkey and Iran, and from countries of the Mekong region such as Cambodia and Myanmar (Burma). APT6 acknowledged the innovation that exists in performance and music in Asia and the Pacific with the Pacific Reggae Project looking at the development of the musical genre in Hawai'i, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and New Zealand.
