Ride with us as we explore the easternmost section of Lolo Pass, from the summit at the Idaho/Montana border, to Missoula, Montana. Lolo Pass is considered by many as one of the top ten rides in North America for good reason. Starting at the summit of Lolo Pass, we follow Highway 12 as it descends to the town of Lolo. From Lolo we travel on to Missoula, Montana. 45 miles of beautiful scenery and fantastic highway. This is part 3 of our 3 part ride through Lolo Pass.

2W1C S03E48: The Lolo Pass
The Lolo Pass is one of the finest highways the US has to offer. It's one of the only ways to cross over the panhandle of Idaho from Washington state to Montana.
The pass itself was used by notable historical figures, while the highway was built by some of the most unlikely of construction workers.
If you ever get the chance, I can't severely suggest it enough.

LOLO SQUARE DANCE CENTER + CAMPGROUND Lolo, Montana
Lolo Square Dance Center & Campground is just 8 miles south of Missoula, MT. You'll be camping among the pines along Lolo Creek on the Lewis & Clark Trail. Does it mean your big rig won't like being under these trees!? Not at all! All rigs easily fit under the tall Ponderosas and don't worry about parking -- a friendly staff person hops on a bicycle and escorts you to a cool, shady site. It's great! In the morning and evening you'll love the way the sun filters through the trees and the birds begin to sing. Will there be pinecones scattered all around to slip and slide on? No way! The Pinecone Patrol is out on a regular basis to snatch up these & other thingamajigs that try to litter the forest floor! The wild flowers are encouraged to grow adding to the natural beauty of this campground. The grass is watered regularly to keep the grounds green & lush under the old pines. Feel like fishing? Drop a line into Lolo Creek located right on site.
Non-Dancers are most welcome to RV or tent camp here! Nationally known callers and cuers come for year 'round dancing with clubs and for special dances. Square Dance and Round Dance lessons take place from autumn through spring and there are summer workshops. Folks come from all over the world to dance in the air-conditioned comfort of the huge Center. Non-dancers are made to feel welcome. Caution! Colorful twirling skirts and fluffy Petticoats floating all around the floor may mesmerize you! Speaking of dancewear, you'll also find Afton's Square Dance Apparel Shop here. It's one of the biggest and best-stocked dance wear shops in the West.

Heart Lake Campout - Lolo National Forest, Montana
The 2018 backpacking season is winding down.
I always end my backpacking season during my favorite season, Fall. We still had a chance to get in a couple of trips before the snow was too deep in the high country.
Heart Lake has been on my list for a few years now. It is a very popular place so for me, it was the perfect time to go see it. I call this big Heart Lake because there are 2 other Heart Lakes in the area just on the Montana side of the Bitterrot Divide. Not to mention the Heart Lake in Mallard Larkin Pioneer Area in Idaho.
We knew that we would probably hit snow, so we prepared for a mild winter trip.
We left I-90 at Superior, Montana and went south towards HooDoo Pass. He hit the trailhead before we reached the pass. From the trailhead we worked our way up trail #171 up towards the lake. It's about 5 miles up to the lake, with 4 1/2 of it being a fairly gentle grade up. The last half mile is where the climbing started.
The mountains surounding the lake are spectacular. At the lake we connected with trail #175 and worked our way down to the southern part of the lake. We found a nice camp spot down there and setup. There isn't much wood down at that end of the lake, but lucky for us that we cam prepared for a winter trip so we had multiple saws. There are some downed dead trees there, but you need a saw to get them. We were able to cut up some wood and split it with a hatchet to make kindling.
The next morning we woke up to a couple inches of fresh snow. The wind was blowing in off of the lake making it pretty fridged at camp. We managed to get the fire going again and we stayed warm.
In the afternoon the weather broke for a bit and I decided to take a walk out of camp. I jumped on trail #175 and walked up the hill to Pearl Lake. It was a good uphill, but short. I made it up to the lake in no time. Trail #175 continues on around Pearl Lake and up the mountain to the top of the ridge where it connects with the Stateline Trail #738. I had thoughts of getting on the Stateline Trail #738 and taking it south down to Goose Lake where I spent a night back in July. There was 4-5 inches of snow at Pearl Lake, so I decided to leave that for another trip. Back at camp we had some great food and settled in beside our nice fire.
Overnight it was clear, which meant that it was cold! We got our fire going again and spent the morning slowly getting our camp packed up.
It was a picture perfect day for hiking in the mountains. We backtracked the way that we had came up all of the way back down to the trailhead.

Siamese Lakes Campout - Lolo National Forest, Montana
In early July we made our way into Montana and to Clearwater Crossing. We planned on getting to Siamese Lakes along the Idaho / Montana border.
We took straight creek in and went up and over Chilcoot Pass in the process. We stayed our first night at lower Siamese Lake and made our way up on to the Bitterroot Divide on the second day. We traversed the divide on the Idaho Centennial Trail until the trail dropped us in to Goose Lake in Idaho.
On the third day we made our way back to the trailhead via the North Fork of Fish Creek.
It was a great trip and gave me a bit of a scare getting over Chilcoot Pass.
