Save our Shola Grasslands
Shola Sky Islands host tropical montane grasslands in a matrix with forests, in the global biodiversity hotspot - Western Ghats. In the last century, over 60% of the landscape has been modified, and more grasslands than the forests have been lost- taken over by planted and invasive timber plantations (particularly Wattle). The predominant paradigm in this region is of forest conservation and forest restoration, but it is the grasslands that need the most attention, with several species like the Nilgiri Pipit tied to this habitat and threatened with extinction. The simple strategy recommended by award-winning conservation practitioners Tanya Balcar and Robert Stewart is to prioritize identifying and preserving the existing grasslands, push back the invading plantation species, and finally to deal with the mature plantations.

Trip Jodi had an amazing stay and exploration at Kotagiri through #stayonskiil.
It was really mesmerising vacation at Kotagiri. We stayed at Darpan Wood house.
Kotagiri is the oldest and the third largest hill stations in the Nilgiris. Looming over and above all the surrounding hills in the North-eastern escarpments, its climate is claimed to be one of the best in the World. Kotagiri literally means the lines of the house of the Kotas. Kotagiri is quietly tucked away in the Nilgiris and used to be the summer resort of the British.
Till date the beauty of hill resort of Kotagiri attracts tourists and the sun scorched souls from far and wide Kotagiri. Unlike Ooty and Coonoor, Kotagiri is situated in an 'open-terrace' massif. At an elevation of 1985 m. the town has developed around numerous knolls and valleys. The Kotagiri weather is more bracing than that of Coonoor and balmier than that of Ooty

However, the first tea plantation in the late 19th century by the daughter of MD Cockburn, tea slowly started taking over coffee until it completely spanned the city. Today, the tea plantations in Kotagiri cover a total area of 30,000 acres.

WHEN NEELAKKURINJI BLOOMED
Neelakkurinji blooms once in twelve years with purplish blue flowers, in the high altitude shola grasslands of Western Ghats in South India. It grows in colonies stretching to acres and acres across the Nilgiris, meaning Blue Mountains - a name ascribed to them by the blue haze of Neelakkurinji blooms.
This film was shot during the 2006 flowering season. Script, videography and direction by P.R.Sreekumar.
Shola Forest, the patches of stunted tropical montane forest found in valleys amid rolling grassland
ஷோலா காடு, புல்வெளிகளில் உருவாகும் புல்வெளிகள்
Sholas are the local name for patches of stunted tropical montane forest found in valleys amid rolling grassland in the higher montane regions of South India. These patches of shola forest are found mainly in the valleys and are usually separated from one another by undulating montane grassland. The shola and grassland together form the shola-grassland complex or mosaic. The word 'shola' is probably derived from the Tamil language word cÕlai (சோலை) meaning grove.[1] The shola-forest and grassland complex has been described as a climatic climax vegetation with forest regeneration and expansion restricted by climatic conditions such as frost or soil characteristics while others have suggested that it may have anthropogenic origins in the burning and removal of forests by early herders and shifting agriculturists.[2]
Shola - Grasslands | Nature's Water Towers
Grasslands and Sholas form an extraordinary eco-system.All our rivers have their origin in these grasslands. This swathe of greenery is a miracle indeed! It is time we preserved it.

Beautiful Kotagiri. Elk falls, Uyilatty
Elk Falls(Also known as Uyilatty falls): This is a tourist attraction to visit in Kotagiri. This place is very well known for the amazing waterfalls and the beautiful European house built during the days of the British colonial rule.
Kothagiri
One of the three popular hill stations in the Nilgiris besides Ooty (29 km), Coonoor (18 km), Kotagiri is your quintessential plantation. Situated at an elevation of 5,882 feet, the hill station is located in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. The name Kotagiri means ‘mountains of the Kotas’ (the Nilgiri hills have been the traditional home of the Kota Tribe). Kotagiri is located at 11.43°N 76.88°E. It has an average elevation of 1793 meters.
Kotagiri’s importance fell when the ghat road from Mettupalayam at the foothills of Coonoor was built. Before the ghat road was built, every traveler going to Ooty had to pass through Kotagiri. Surrounded by tea estates and beautiful green landscapes, Kotagiri offers plenty of opportunities for trekking and rock climbing. Besides trekking, there is not much to do in Kotagiri except take leisurely strolls through the tea plantations, watch the workers pluck tea leaves and soak in the cool climate of the region. Needless to say, a visit to one of the tea factories that cater to international markets is a must.
The most popular trekking trails in Kotagiri are towards Kodanad, Catherine Falls and Longwood Shola. The trail leading to Kodanad goes through a meadow, tea estates and the Moyar River. The major attractions near Kotagiri include the Catherine Falls, Elk Falls, Doddabetta Range and the Rangaswami Pillar. Kodanad Point offers spectacular views of the surrounding hills and valleys.
The best time to visit Kotagiri is during October. Unlike in Ooty and Coonoor, the weather in Kotagiri is far more pleasant. It was earlier known as Kotakeri and Kotagheri which means ‘street of the Kotas’. In 1911, the government acquired the region and the Kotas were shifted to Aggal hamlet about two km away. The region was discovered by two civil servants of the Madras government in pursuit of outlaws. They reported that there is a region beyond the pass in the hills after the village of Kil Kotagiri which has climate similar to a European country. They called the region ‘Kotacherry’.
John Sullivan, the then collector of Coimbatore, visited Kotagiri and was so drawn to the place that he built a home here making him the first European to reside in Kotagiri.
