Kotagiri - India's Switzerland | Nilgiris' Oldest and Prettiest Hill station | கோத்தகிரி | #TLGVlog
Kotagiri is a hill station 29km away from Ooty, this place is not that too famous like Ooty but it is more beautiful. Ooty is always crowded in the seasons, so Kotagiri is always a better option. The climate of Kotagiri is so awesome because of this climate the place is known as Switzerland of India.
Kotagiri is a beautiful little hill station that is often overlooked by travellers heading to its more famous neighbour, Ooty
Discover the wild beauty of the Nilgiris as you watch the sun rise over the emerald mountains from the Kodanad view point. Located at a height of about 6500 feet, the watch tower at Kodanad view point near Kotagiri provides a bird’s eye view of Thengumarahada ( a lush 500 acre farming cooperative ), the beautiful Bhavanisagar reservoir, the meandering Moyar river and the strikingly picturesque Rangaswamy Peak.
The mountain town of Kotagiri is surrounded by hauntingly beautiful wilderness, misty meadows and several waterfalls. Feast your eyes on the stunning Catherine Falls at Kotagiri, a plunging waterfall which cascades an impressive 250 feet from cloud-enshrouded cliffs to the jungle below. Another must-see waterfall at Kotagiri is the mesmerisingly beautiful Uyilatti Falls or the Elk falls.

A perfect alternative to Ooty Kothagiri and Kodanad is the hilly retreat which is one amongst the three major hill stations located in the Nilgiris.well if you agree , then you might went to have a look at Kodanad which is much more peaceful then Ooty.
Kodanad is located about 18 km east of Kothagiri on the eastern edges of Nilgiris.
Located at hight of about 6500 feet.

Kodanad View Point is one the famous attraction in Nilgiris. The most popular attraction in this area and located at a height of about 6500 feet, Kodanad view point is situated 18 km east of Kotagiri inside the Kodanad Tea Estates. Kodanad view point offers its visitors the breathtaking beauty of the Blue Hill Mountains and views of the plains. From here you can see the green carpeted paddy fields of Thengumarahada village lying below, the Bhavanisagar dam's reservoir, the many Tea Estates and the Moyar River. The Moyar gorge located between the Deccan plateau and the Nilgiri plateau, joins the river Bhavani across the valley. One can also enjoy the view of Rangaswamy Peak and Pillar from the watch tower located here and the beautiful sunset. During the monsoon, the view is often obscured because of monsoon clouds towering up into the sky and the mysterious rising mist.

Kothagiri
One of the three popular hill stations in the Nilgiris besides Ooty (29 km), Coonoor (18 km), Kotagiri is your quintessential plantation. Situated at an elevation of 5,882 feet, the hill station is located in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. The name Kotagiri means ‘mountains of the Kotas’ (the Nilgiri hills have been the traditional home of the Kota Tribe). Kotagiri is located at 11.43°N 76.88°E. It has an average elevation of 1793 meters.
Kotagiri’s importance fell when the ghat road from Mettupalayam at the foothills of Coonoor was built. Before the ghat road was built, every traveler going to Ooty had to pass through Kotagiri. Surrounded by tea estates and beautiful green landscapes, Kotagiri offers plenty of opportunities for trekking and rock climbing. Besides trekking, there is not much to do in Kotagiri except take leisurely strolls through the tea plantations, watch the workers pluck tea leaves and soak in the cool climate of the region. Needless to say, a visit to one of the tea factories that cater to international markets is a must.
The most popular trekking trails in Kotagiri are towards Kodanad, Catherine Falls and Longwood Shola. The trail leading to Kodanad goes through a meadow, tea estates and the Moyar River. The major attractions near Kotagiri include the Catherine Falls, Elk Falls, Doddabetta Range and the Rangaswami Pillar. Kodanad Point offers spectacular views of the surrounding hills and valleys.
The best time to visit Kotagiri is during October. Unlike in Ooty and Coonoor, the weather in Kotagiri is far more pleasant. It was earlier known as Kotakeri and Kotagheri which means ‘street of the Kotas’. In 1911, the government acquired the region and the Kotas were shifted to Aggal hamlet about two km away. ALSO SEE How to Reach Catherine Falls in Kotagiri by Road, Train and Flight
The region was discovered by two civil servants of the Madras government in pursuit of outlaws. They reported that there is a region beyond the pass in the hills after the village of Kil Kotagiri which has climate similar to a European country. They called the region ‘Kotacherry’.
John Sullivan, the then collector of Coimbatore, visited Kotagiri and was so drawn to the place that he built a home here making him the first European to reside in Kotagiri.

Kodanad View Point is such a famed peak and an acclaimed tourist spot that takes one to the enchanting scenery of dark and light hued landscape of Nilgiri. From here one can also spot other attractions like Rangasamy Peak, Rangasamy Pillar, Catherine Falls and Dolphin's Nose. Tall tress and short bushes intervened by brown barren patches and glittering under golden sunlight brings an artists imagination of nature into reality.
Kodanad View Point is around 16km away from the main Kotagiri town,
best time to visit the point is during day when colors of the surrounding appears crystal clear under a clear sky, and
tourists can purchase nuts, dry fruits and other local produce from here.
Tea estates on one side and rolling valleys on the other create a perfect juxtaposition of nature that in turn act as a soothing balm for enthusiastic eyes.
