Colors, engravings, books, sketches, video, the retrospective of the work of Bernard Alligand is currently exhibited in the Louis Nucéra Library. The artist from Angers settled at 29 years old on the Côte d'Azur, in his studio in Vence where he started to become famous. Then his collaborations with authors such as Michel Butor or Gaston Puel allowed him to conquer the capital in the 90s. Because of his strong attachment to the South of France, Bernard Alligand has donated a part of his engraved works to the library of the city of Nice. A good reason to discover or rediscover the artist.
There are two essential things that define Bernard Alligand work. First, the variety of his techniques, secondly his love for beautiful paper. He works on wonderful papers. You'll tell me that the paper is not what matters most in engraving but, from my point of view it matters, you have to look at his work as a combination that forms a piece of art. The paper, the technique, the colors and the message of the artist is a whole. Françoise Michelizza, Director of the Nice Library.
Paper in all its forms, including accurate techniques reflect his aqua-etching work of more than 25 years.
Even if the aqua-etching is not colorful, it is a black and white resulting from an aqua-etching engraving which is representative of a quality of paper, a quality of plissé and a depth as well in the white and in the black that give a very specific relief to this work. You can also see other extremely colorful and joyful works, illuminated by the light of the French Riviera on our walls. Françoise Michelizza.
Discover the Bernard Alligand engraved work until March 19. Bernard Alligand will be in Nice in March for the release of Volume 2 of his retrospective edited by the library of Nice.
