Hong Kong and Macau
Both are mostly self-governing territories within China, just 61 kilometers, or 38 miles apart. Both are cities- no they’re not Mr. Beat you idiot!
Ok Ok, both are special. Special administrative regions of China, that is., based on China’s one country, two systems principle. According to CGP Grey, they are both “the most country-like countries that aren’t countries.” Confused yet? Basically, Hong Kong and Macau are a part of China, but both get a lot of leeway to decide how they want to do stuff compared to the rest of China. China takes care of their foreign affairs and military defense and they take care of everything else. Both have a presidential limited democracy, although Hong Kong seems more open to expand that democracy than Macau.
Both are part of the Pearl River Delta, which is probably the biggest urban area in the world based on both its size and population. Some estimates put the population of the Pearl River Delta metropolitan area at 120 million! Oh my goodness. What? 120 million? No way. Russia has like just 24 million more people than that. Ok sorry, anyway, both are incredibly densely populated. Macau is the most densely populated territory in the world and Hong Kong is 4th. There are people everywhere, man!
So maybe this makes sense, but the largest ethnic group in both regions is Chinese. However, Hong Kong has a significant Filipino and Indonesian minority and Macau has a significant Macanese minority, which is a mix of Portuguese and Asian ancestry. Wait, Portuguese? Huh?
Yeah, well both Hong Kong and Macau are former colonies of Western empires. Until 1997, Great Britain controlled Hong Kong. Until 1999, Portugal controlled Macau. Because of that, the two were heavily influenced by foreign powers and not as much influenced by China. Actually, over time, the foreign powers left them both alone, too, and they thrived, probably because of that. In fact, both Hong Kong and Macau are two of the richest territories in the world due to free markets working their magic there.
Indeed, both make a lot of money. Hong Kong’s GDP per capita is about $45,000 a year, the 12th highest in the world, although it is dealing with some dramatic income inequality right now. Macau’s GDP per capita is over $104,000 a year, making it the 3rd highest in the world. Macau is so rich that it doesn’t know what to do with all the extra money, so its government gives it back directly to the citizens. Both have very low taxes compared to most of the world. However, residents of Hong Kong do pay about 25% more taxes than residents of Macau.
Despite this, according to the Heritage Foundation’s Index of Economic Freedom, Hong Kong ranks number one in the world, and has been ranked number one every year since the list began 23 years ago. Macau is ranked 34th on that same list.
The cost of living in both countries is pretty similar, although Macau is about 3% cheaper currently, mostly due to Hong Kong’s higher housing costs.
Both have low unemployment. Based on the latest numbers I could find, Hong Kong’s unemployment rate is 2.9% and people were freaking out recently when Macau’s unemployment went up from 1.8% all the way up to 1.9%. I’m obviously kidding. That’s a ridiculously low unemployment rate.
Speaking of ridiculous, both have a ridiculously high life expectancy.

Casino visit limit on financially vulnerable to take effect on 1 June - 28May2013
SINGAPORE: From June 1, there will be a cap imposed on the number of times financially vulnerable patrons visit a casino each month.
Once imposed, a Visit Limit will be in force until revocation is approved by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG).
Administered by the NCPG, the Casino Visit Limit will complement the current Casino Exclusion system by providing another option for individuals and their families to control gambling habits.
The Casino Visit Limit will be implemented in three ways.
An individual can apply to limit visits online through the Voluntary Visit Limit. Online application can be done via SingPass or in person at NCPG's office.
There, they are given the option to cap their visits from eight times a month to once a month.
But for problem gamblers who don't make such a conscious effort, there are other options.
Family members of a gambler can alert the NCPG to impose a visit limit through the Family Visit Limit.
The NCPG itself may impose a Third-Party Visit Limit if there is evidence that a financially vulnerable patron is visiting the casino frequently.
Other than the extent of casino visits provided by the casinos, other factors such credit record, work situation and information provided by family members will be taken into consideration.
A Committee of Assessors will decide on the number of casino visits a person is limited to. The Committee is made up of members from the NCPG, as well as those from the grassroots organisations and the social service sector.
Each individual's case will be assessed by three committee members and the limit imposed differs from person to person.
Before the Committee makes a Third-Party Limit against any person, the individual will be given a chance to object. Those imposed with the visit limit may be referred to counselling, rehabilitation or special education thereafter.
And while the Visit Limit may not be sufficient to solve all gambling-related issues in Singapore, the government says it does not want to be complacent.
Mr Chan Chun Sing, Acting Minister for Social and Family Development, said: There will be no one measure that can fix all the problems but we have to progressively expand our tool box to more measures and more tools to counter the growing number of platforms that our problem gamblers have access to.
It's a welcomed move for centres which deal with gambling addiction.
Mr Gerald Goh, deputy director of Thye Hua Kwan's Problem Gambling Recovery Centre, said: The thing is with pathological gamblers, sometimes they may not be able to control their urges to gamble so it's important to have a multi-disciplinary support network where there are agencies like counselling centres and there are social safeguards available to help them deal with the problem.
Some 4,000 to 6,000 financially vulnerable individuals could be affected by the Visit Limit.
The Ministry of Social and Family Development said it is open to working with other agencies to monitor financially vulnerable casino patrons.

How Hong Kong & Macau Profit By Sourcing From Australia? Long 2c_1280x720.mov
(for limited and private viewing)
To survive and thrive, businesses must offer the best products at the best price.
And in Hong Kong and Macau, more and more businesses
are doing that by sourcing from Australia!
The land down under represents some of the world's
leading products and services across a wide spectrum.
-- including food and beverage, health products, fashion and art, IT and green technology, transportation and construction, as well as investments.
This is the story of three companies in Hong Kong, which sourced products and services from Australia -- and grew their business.
And thanks to help from Austrade -- the Australian government's Trade and Investment development arm -
all three companies were able to reduce their
TIME, COST AND RISK.
Phil Ingram is Austrade's Senior Trade Commissioner.
Our team is totally committed to working with Australian companies and local companies herein Hong Kong
for their businesses to grow and develop. I mean that's our ultimate aim. And we can do that through saving on time and effort, finding you the information, finding and cutting straight to the products and services you're searching for --
or that investment opportunity you're driving for.
MACAO project and the Masai community
MACAO project started in 2003 as a dream of two people, Baraka and Juliana Eliud, who wanted to change lives of Massai children in the Loliondo region, Tanzania. Our aim is to continue with the effective and sustainable education program for children, which has been now successfully running for 8 years. The second project we are running aside is holding classes about various topics in surrounding Massai communities. Mostly, these classes cover topics connected to health issues such as HIV prevention and they are being conducted on a monthly basis.
This project supports the construction of two news dormitories, which would help to accommodate a big number of children who stay away from home during school year as well as orphans. At the moment, our facilities enable us to accommodate 80 children (approximately half of them are orphans) - 40 girls and 40 boys; however with bigger dormitories we could reach out to even bigger number of children, needing our assistance.
How you can help?

Hong Kong (香港; Fragrant Harbour), officially known as Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is a city[9] located on the southern coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea.[10] Hong Kong is well known for its expansive skyline, deep natural harbour and extreme population density (some seven million inhabitants over a land mass of 1,104 km2 (426 sq mi)).[11] The current population of Hong Kong comprises 93.6% ethnic Chinese.[5] A major part of Hong Kong's Cantonese-speaking majority originated from the neighbouring Guangdong province,[12] from where many fled during the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Chinese Civil War, and the communist rule in China.[13][14][15][16] It was also named the freest market economy by the Heritage Foundation Index of Economic Freedom.[17]
Macau (/məˈkaʊ/; traditional Chinese: 澳門; simplified Chinese: 澳门; Jyutping: ou3mun4*2; pinyin: Àomén), also spelled Macao, is one of the two Special Administrative Regions of the People's Republic of China, the other being Hong Kong. Macau lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta across from Hong Kong, which is about 64 kilometers to the east, and it is also bordered by Guangdong Province to the north and the South China Sea to the east and south.[8] With an estimated population of around 636,200 living in an area of 30.3 km2 (11.6 sq mi), it is the most densely populated region in the world.[9]
A former Portuguese colony, Macau was administered by Portugal from the mid-16th century until late 1999, when it was the last remaining European colony in Asia.[10][11] Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 1550s. In 1557, Macau was rented to Portugal by the Ming Dynasty as a trading port. The Portuguese administered the city under Chinese authority and sovereignty until 1887, when Macau became a colony of the Portuguese Empire. Sovereignty over Macau was transferred back to China on 20 December 1999. The Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of Macau stipulate that Macau operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2049, fifty years after the transfer.[12]
Under the policy of one country, two systems, the PRC's Central People's Government is responsible for the territory's defense and foreign affairs, while Macau maintains its own legal system, police force, monetary system, customs policy, and immigration policy. Macau participates in many international organizations and events that do not require members to possess national sovereignty.[12][13]
Macau is one of the world's richest cities, and as of 2013 its GDP per capita by purchasing power parity is higher than that of any country in the world, according to the World Bank.[14][15] It became the world's largest gambling centre in 2006,[16] with the economy heavily dependent on gambling and tourism, as well as manufacturing. Cantonese people from Hong Kong and Guangdong, in addition to the recent mainland tourism from Mandarin-speaking regions, have boosted the economy of Macau significantly. According to The World Factbook, Macau has the second highest life expectancy in the world.[17] Moreover, it is one of only a few regions in Asia with a very high Human Development Index, ranking 25th as of 2011.[18]
