Deep Sea Fishing in Hawaii
Deep Sea Fishing in Hawaii off the coast of O'ahu. K.C. and Barry brought in a couple small yellow fin tuna but our bigger catches were a male and female mahi-mahi or dolphin fish. K.C.'s fish took him over 20 minutes to get his nice 30+ pound female in the boat. It took me over 55 minutes to round up my 45+ pound bull! One hell of a trip!

Spearfishing off the shore of Makaha in Oahu, Hawaii. Makaha (Hawaiian for “fierce” or “savage” is a great place in Honolulu County, Hawaiʻi, United States. It’s a town located along the Pacific Ocean, west of the Makaha Valley, and at the foot of Mt. Ka'ala in the Wai’anae Mountain Range. It is the last of the leeward towns on O'ahu. North of Makaha is little development, i.e. no towns, no gas stations, or restaurants. It is located 35 miles northwest of Honolulu, but is a part of Honolulu County. 84-257 Farrington Hwy, Waiʻanae, HI 96792

Dolphins in Hawaii
FIRST TEN SECONDS SHAKY, SORRY! Check out 0:33 or 1:12 for some nice jumps and mama/baby footage.
Off the west coast of Oahu, courtesy of oceanjoycruises.com . The cruise included:
-- about an hour on the bus, picking up people in Waikiki then heading west
-- about four hours on the boat including
-- about an hour snorkelling (we saw three huge turtles)
-- quite a bit of time around the dolphins
-- OK lunch (chicken, rice, pork sandwiches)
-- endless alcohol
I'd certainly recommend the trip and could even picture doing it again in ten years. That said, just a note that the coral isn't the smorgasbord of curiousities I saw my only other time snorkelling, in Okinawa, where there were 100s of types of fish and coral. We still had 4-5 kinds of fish in big numbers, along with the huge turtles.

Hawaiian Seafood Caught by Exploited Fishermen
(8 Sep 2016) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus062643
EVERY MORNING BEFORE DAWN...THOUSANDS OF POUNDS OF FRESH SEAFOOD ARE OFFLOADED FROM BOATS AT THE LARGEST AUCTION OF ITS KIND IN THE COUNTRY.
(bell ringing nats start auction)
AT THE HONOLULU FISH ACTION... THE HIGHER THE QUALITY OF THE CATCH, THE BETTER THE PRICE...WITH SOME AHI TUNA GOING FOR AS MUCH AS ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS EACH.
(fast-talking auctioneer nats)
THEIR CATCH ENDS UP AT RESTAURANTS AND SEAFOOD COUNTERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY...FROM WHOLE FOODS AND COSTCO TO ROY¹S.
SOUNDBITE Brooks Takenaka, GM - Honolulu Fish Market:
'We're trying to deliver the best possible product. These guys risk their lives to go catch these fish.
BUT AN AP INVESTIGATION HAS FOUND THAT UNDOCUMENTED FOREIGN FISHERMEN WHO CATCH THOSE FISH EARN VERY LITTLE MONEY AND ARE CONFINED TO THEIR AMERICAN-OWNED BOATS FOR YEARS AT A TIME.
WHILE NOT ALL BOATS SUFFER FROM POOR CONDITIONS, AP FOUND INSTANCES OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING, ACTIVE TUBERCULOSIS AND LOW FOOD SUPPLIES.
SOUNDBITE Kathryn Xian, Executive Director - Pacific Alliance to Stop Slavery: Most of the fish caught and sold in Hawaii is done by the use of exploiting migrant workers in what looks to be a human trafficking scheme that's legitimized by our own laws.
ABOUT SEVEN HUNDRED MEN WORK IN THIS UNIQUE U-S FLEET WITHOUT VISAS.
A FEDERAL LOOPHOLE ALLOWS UNDOCUMENTED FISHERMEN TO WORK ON THE HAWAII FLEET AS LONG AS THEY REMAIN CONFINED TO THEIR BOATS.
THEY HAVE NO WAGE PROTECTION AND LITTLE LEGAL RECOURSE.
SOME ONLY MAKE 70 CENTS AN HOUR...WORKING UP TO 22 HOURS A DAY.
MOST COME FROM IMPOVERISHED SOUTHEAST ASIAN AND PACIFIC NATIONS LIKE THESE FISHERMEN FROM INDONESIA.
SOUNDBITE (Indonesian with English translation) Syamsul Maarif, Indonesian fisherman:
The worst one is the last boat I was in. because we did not take a bath for one week and it was really difficult to have a time to go to the toilet.
EVEN WHEN THE BOATS ARE IN PORT IN HAWAII, THE MEN ARE NOT PERMITTED TO GO ASHORE.
INSTEAD CAPTAINS ARE REQUIRED TO KEEP THEIR PASSPORTS WITH APPROVAL FROM FEDERAL AGENTS.
THESE INDONESIAN MEN ESCAPED WHEN THEIR BOAT DOCKED IN SAN FRANCISCO AND WERE GRANTED VISAS DESIGNATED SPECIFICALLY FOR VICTIMS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING.
SOUNDBITE (Indonesian with English translation) Abdul - Granted Asylum in US I felt that I was not human.
THEY CHOSE NOT TO SHOW THEIR FACES...BUT THROUGH AN INTERPRETER CLAIMED THEIR WAGES WERE NOT ONLY UNFAIR BUT THAT THE WORK WAS UNSAFE.
SOUNDBITE (Indonesian with English translation) Abdul - Granted Asylum in US I have seen a lot of accidents among friends and the captain did not bring any of them to the doctor.
SOUNDBITE (Indonesian with English translation) Sorihin - Granted Asylum in US If I keep on staying on that boat, I think I would die.
THE U-S CUSTOMS AND BORDER PROTECTION DOES PERIODICALLY INSPECT THE FISHING BOATS WHEN DOCKED IN U-S PORTS.
...AND THE U-S COAST GUARD ROUTINELY BOARDS THE VESSELS AT SEA.
SOUNDBITE Mario Villani - US Coast Guard
I personally ask the crew about their welfare and if they're being treated correctly, if they're getting paid.
WHILE THE AGENCIES CAN MAKE SURE THE FISHERMEN ARE GETTING PAID SOMETHING...THEY HAVE NO AUTHORITY OVER THE AMOUNT PAID.
THIS FISHERMEN SAYS HE NEARLY DIED EARLIER THIS YEAR WHEN HIS BOAT SANK OFF THE COAST OF HAWAII.
OTHERS HAVE BEEN KILLED, FALLING OVERBOARD OR IN KNIFE FIGHTS.
SOUNDBITE (Indonesian with English translation) Syamsul Maarif - Indonesian fisherman We want to make a living for our family, children and our future, so we have to face it.
