Majnu Ka Tila | Tibetan Market in Delhi | Things To Do In Delhi | DesiGirl Traveller
In this video, I have explored ‘Majnu Ka Tila’ which is also known as the ‘Little Tibet of Delhi’. This area in North Delhi is a Tibetan refugee camp. It is a great place to hangout in Delhi. Majnu ka Tila also has a few interesting shops that sell funky shoes, clothes, handicrafts, oxidized jewelry etc. In order to reach at Majnu ka tila, you have to get down at Vidhan Sabha or Kashmere Gate Metro Station and take a rickshaw from there. Majnu ka Tila is best known for its Tibetan Market and Tibetan Food. You can buy colorful t-shirts, shoes, jeans, bags, bracelets, handicrafts from this place. Overall, Majnu ka Tila is a great market in Delhi for girls shopping. This market has many Tibetan restaurants as well. Remember to try out the Tibetan food when you are here. Momos, Thupka, Lafe etc are just to name a few of the must-try food of Delhi in this market.

Majnu Ka Tila | Mini Tibet of Delhi | Places to visit in delhi
Little About Majnu Ka Tila :-
Majnu-ka-tilla (MT) is a colony in Delhi, India that was established around 1950. It is also called the chop chop square of India.Majnu-ka-tilla is officially called New Aruna Nagar Colony, Chungtown, and Samyeling. It is part of North Delhi district and is located at the bank of the Yamuna River (NH-1) near ISBT Kashmiri Gate.
The historic name of area, literally means the hillock of Majnu, after the tilla or mound where during the reign of Sikandar Lodhi (r. 1489–1517) on Delhi Sultanate, a local Iranian Sufi mystic Abdulla, nicknamed Majnu (lost in love), met Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak on 20 July 1505. Majnu ferried people across the Yamuna river for free as a service to God, his devotion resulted in the Nanak staying here till end July. In later history Sikh military leader Baghel Singh Dhaliwal built the Majnu ka Tila Gurudwara to commemorate the stay in 1783, and the sixth Sikh guru, Guru Har Gobind also stayed here. Today it is one of oldest extant Sikh shrines in Delhi and the surrounding estate of donated by early 19th-century Sikh emperor, Ranjit Singh.

Tibetan settlement: 1950's to present
Just as Aruna Nagar was developing, the 1959 Tibetan uprising took place in March, most residents of Majnu-ka-tilla left Tibet in 1959-60, when the Dalai Lama too went into exile to Dharamshala. Soon, a small Tibetan refugee camp up across the road, on the Yamuna riverbed. The land was allotted by the Government of India to the refugees in 1960. After the Sino-Indian War in 1962, many of the refugees who had previously settled temporarily near the Indo-Chinese border shifted here. Today, it is home to second generation of Tibet refugees and is also known as Samyeling, through colloquially as Little-Tibet or Mini-Tibet.

Indian shop selling different materials of silk in Majnu-ka-tilla
These materials are usually used to make a Tibetan traditional dress (chupa). They have different varieties and ranges of silk.this shop is located in Majnu ka tilla delhi.
The traditional chupa is typically made of sheepskin, but over time, Tibetans began adding layers of silk as indicators of wealth and power. This exquisite ensemble consists of a cotton sateen inner robe lined with sheepskin and otter fur, a silk blue and silver Chinese brocade jacket with European-style patterning, and a short inner jacket made of red silk brocade also with otter fur. She also wears a cotton and felt hat with lambskin, and an elaborate headdress made of padded wool with silk, velvet and silk fringe, silver coins and discs, coral, glass, paste and amber.
