“Karesansui Gardens” of Manshu-in, Kyoto.
Manshu-in (曼殊院) is a Buddhist temple located near the Shugakuin Imperial Villa, Sakyō-ku, in northeast Kyoto, Japan. Manshu-in was founded by Dengyō Daishi (伝教大師) in the 8th century.
The “Karesansui Gardens” of Manshu-in are a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty. Karesansui (枯山水) is a Garden with a waterless pond and this one is constructed in the Enshū style (遠州好み).
The brochure states the following: “ There is a waterfall rock at the vital spot of the garden, from which a stream of white sand flows out, spreading onto both sides of the rock in front of the waterless waterfall. There are two islets, “Crane” and “Tortoise”. Upon the former is a Japanese white pine (Pinus pentaphylla) shaped in the form of a crane. This tree is 400 years old and below the pine tree is a stone lantern popularly called “Christian doro or Kurusu doro or Manshuin doro”. The other islets has a pine tree in the shape of a tortoise”.

Manshuin is a temple of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism that was built in the 8th century by the sect's founder, the worshipped monk Saicho. It is situated in the Shugakuin area, just one kilometer from the Shugakuin Imperial Villa northeast of the center of Kyoto city. The temple is a so called monzeki temple, indicating that the head priests were historically imperial or aristocratic lineage.
Manshuin temple features the paintings by leading artists that decorate the sliding doors fusuma and folding screens byobu in its various rooms. Many names of the rooms derives from their feature paintings, such the Peacock Room, Tiger Room and Twilight Room.
The temple's garden is a excellent representation of karesansui, whereby raked gravel is used instead of water. In this artistic sea of pebbles, there are two islets, one of which has a 400 year old pine tree in the shape of a crane. Manshuin is famous for its beautiful autumn colors which usually peaks around late November.

The Gardens of the Manshu-in Shoin!
Located in northern Kyoto, this temple is reputable for its 'shoin' architectural style, typical of the early Edo period. Its garden is designed as a boat on the water, and is also well known for its beautiful style.
Manshu-in (曼殊院), also known as the Manshuin Monzeki, is a Tendai temple located near the Shugakuin Imperial Villa at Sakyō-ku, Ichijo-ji, Takenouchi-cho, in northeast Kyoto, Japan.
The temple was founded by Dengyo Daishi in the 8th century. It was then located near Mount Hiei and known as Tobibo, but renamed Manshuin in 1108 or 1109. In the early Edo period the temple moved to its current site. Today the temple is notable both for its buildings and a fine garden - the gardens of the Manshu-in shoin are a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty.
Manshuin has a great number of beautifully painted sliding doors (襖 fusuma) and panels, with each room having a different theme. These rooms are: the Tiger room, the Peacock room, the Waterfall room, the Bamboo room, the Snow room, the Fuji room, the Twilight room and the Round Hearth room. The entry building contains a Tiger Room with images said to have been painted by Kano Eitoku 狩野 永徳 (1543--1590), Bamboo Room with Edo wood-block prints, and Peacock Room with pictures by Ganku 岸駒 (1749/56--1839). The main temple hall (Great Shoin) dates from the early Edo period, and is now listed as an Important Cultural Property. It contains a Waterfall Room with slides by Kanō Tanyū 狩野探幽 (1602--1674), and Snowy Scenes Room with screen pictures by the same artist and shelves much like those in the Katsura Imperial Villa. The smaller hall (Small Shoin) is also an important culture property; it contains the Mount Fuji Room (pictures by Kanō Tanyū on the sliding doors); Twilight Room with royal throne and more paintings by Kano; and a tea room.
The temple's major garden is in the Karesansui (枯山水) style, and now designated as an eminent scenery; it contains a notable Pinus pentaphylla tree, now about 400 years old, set within an island on a stream of white sand. The inner garden is quite small, and features a stone basin and old well.

曼殊院門跡 Manshuin Monzeki Temple Kyoto Japan

Manshuin Temple 曼殊院
Manshuin Temple 曼殊院 is a small but beautiful temple in the northeastern part of Kyoto. The dry landscape garden is the focal point of the temple. I visited this temple during different time of the year, from 2010-2011.
Gardens of Tenjuan, a sub-temple of Nanzen-ji in Kyoto.
Tenjuan (天授庵) is one of the most historically important temples of the Nanzen-ji (南禅寺). It was built in 1336, during the reign of Emperor Kōgon (光厳天), as a dedication to the founder of the Nanzen-ji, Daimin Kokushi Oshō Mukan Fumon (大民國師和尚-無關普門).
The eastern garden in front of the main hall is a rock garden. A stone footpath, embedded in white sand and green moss, runs from the main gate to the Main Hall. The footpath was constructed in 1338, just a few years after completion of Tenjuan.
The southern garden is a good example of 14th century landscaping in Kyoto. The two central islands epitomise this style. A long peninsula extending from the study and a smaller peninsula extending from the other side meet to form a curling clasp, creating an eastern and western pond. The placement of the rocks near the waterfall indicate that the garden dates back to the original construction of Tenjuan.
