Maui travel | Most Dangerous Beach | Makena Big Beach Maui Hawaii
Located in south Maui, only minutes from Wailea and Kihei, Makena Beach State Park is one of Maui's signature beaches.
Big Beach is a beautiful, long, wide, undeveloped sandy beach. With beautiful views and a large shore-break. Big Beach is a must-see.
Big Beach is not the official name of this beach but it is the name which it is most well known by. Other names for this beach are: Makena Beach and Oneloa Beach
The Hawaiian name for Big Beach is Oneloa, long (stretch of) sand. Makena means abundance.
A wicked shore-break exists here when the surf is up that can be dangerous for the inexperienced.
The shore break crashes right at the water’s edge, and you should always enter the ocean here cautiously. If in doubt, consult a lifeguard.

Maui, Hawaii and Travaasa Hana
For its admirers, there's truth behind the old saying “Maui No Ka Oi” — Maui is the best. The “Valley Isle” offers some of the world's finest white-sand beaches; sunrises from dormant volcanos; ocean vistas along the rain-forest road to Hana; and enticing shops and restaurants in the historic former whaling center of Lahaina.

Hawaii - Driving Maui - Road to Hana in 30min
(5/19/2015)
This video provides a full accounting of driving conditions from the small town of Pa'ia along the the narrow, winding Hana Highway 360 to the southeast side of the island, several miles past Hana. Multitudes of narrow roads, 1 lane bridges, switchback and blind curves make this trek an all day affair as well as a hair raising adventure. Renting a convertible allows you to get the full experience, but be sure to you can manually shift the transmission in low gear for engine braking on those downhill stretches. If you are an overly cautious driver, please remember to pull off when possible to let locals and other faster traffic pass. Please be sure to mind yield signs identifying one-lane traffic zones and 5-7 car limit local courtesy to one-lane crossings.
BE WARNED: There are many hazards along this road besides the road itself, including but not limited to:
- Distracted Tourist Drivers - These drivers are not familiar with the road nor the hazardous driving conditions. They may drive slow, stop unexpectedly and not yield at one-lane crossings as required. Try to be patient with their ignorance.
- Frustrated Locals - Some locals have very little patience for tourist drivers. They tend to drive fast, loose, tailgate and will notify you to get out of their way. I recommend to let them pass as soon as possible and try to forgive with a smile.
- Random Pedestrians - Waterfall enthusiasts, photographers and other random pedestrians may find their way on bridges and in the middle of road. Watch out as they are unpredictable and do not always yield to traffic.
- Vegetation - Trees, grasses, brush and other plants may obstruct your view of opposing yield stops and other hazards. Limbs and other debris may find their way onto the road as the road is typically under a heavy canopy.
- Water and Falling Rocks - I've never come across falling rocks, but as the road is cut into the side of old volcanic rock and it rains a lot, both may find their way on the road.
LASTLY: This road can be a wonderful experience, however please know before you go. Be safe and a kind driver.
Mahalo for viewing. Aloha!

Maui 2009
Home videos from our May 2009 trip to Maui.
0:04 - Waikani Falls
Probably the most picturesque waterfalls we found. Barely visible from the Road to Hana (between mile markers 21 and 22), we parked on the side of the road, climbed over a shack, and hiked across a rocky but shallow river to make it here. We had a picnic lunch by the lower falls (where we saw the hidden frog at 0:22).
0:24 - Twin Falls
One of the first stops on the road to Hana (just past mile marker 2), and definitely one of our favorite spots. We got a fresh smoothie from the fruit stand at the side of the road, and then hiked a ways until making it to this secluded area. Rope-swinging through a waterfall was one of my favorite memories - I did it at least half a dozen times.
0:29 - Haleakala Crater
It was a long, curvy drive to get to the rim, but the view at the top was worth it. We didn't hike down or do the sunrise/sunset thing like many do. The colorful valley peeking through the fast-moving clouds seemed like we were on another planet.
0:58 - Maui Magic
The Maui Magic snorkeling trip that takes off from Maalaea Harbor was a great way to snorkel near Molokini, see some turtles, ride down an onboard slide, and get burgers grilled by the captain himself.
1:41 - Old Lahaina Luau
Touristy but fun. Drink a Lava Flow and take advantage of unlimited Ahi Poke.
2:23 - Makena State Park / Big Beach
An enormous stretch of beach with solid waves and a beautiful sunset.
Maui - Road to Hana
Our two day stop in Maui, on the Carnival Spirit, started off with a trip along the coast on the Road to Hana. The journey was filled with spectacular views and many waterfalls along the winding road.

We go to Hana for our two part season finale! There is a legend of the Waianapanapa Caves that they say it is haunted. We dive right in to see if we can find anything.

Bamboo Forrest, Jaw Surfing, Road to Hana and Black Sand Beaches in Maui Hawaii
This was our 4th day in Maui Hawaii. We woke up early to take the Road to Hana. On the way we stopped at Pea'hi to visit Jaws Beach and watch the surf competition that was going on. Some of those waves reached 50 ft high! Afterwards we kept on heading East and found hidden waterfalls, bamboo forrest and got our picture taken with some parrots. Our final stop was Wai'anapanapa State Park to see the black sand beach. Unfortunately it was closed for renovation so we headed all the way around the island back to our AirBnb.

DOORS OFF HELICOPTER TOUR OF WEST MAUI! | Maui vlog #4
Riding around in a helicopter is by far the BEST way to see Maui! Especially when the helicopter has no doors!
There are so many tall waterfalls that there's no other way to get to them other than by waterfall. It definitely felt like we were going to Jurassic Park and the theme was running through my head the entire ride. Although the hefty price tag, it was worth every single penny and I highly recommend the doors off as there's nothing obstructing your view of the beautiful landscape of Hawai'i.
