Campground Review - River Bend & Soda Creek Falls
We enjoyed our trip River Bend this past October yet due to the wet weather, we were unable to get out and explore. Recently, we went back to River Bend and had the chance to get out!
The weather was perfect for walks around the camp, along the trails and exploring locations nearby.
Getting out for a hike was the highlight of our trip. The best part? The trail head to Soda Creek Falls was only 10 miles East from River Bend Campground. Easy to get to! The trail to the waterfall is 1.5 miles ... round trip. It's a quick hike. With that said, it is a steep hike. But, one that is worth it. You want to be sure to hike this trail on a dry day as it can be muddy and slippery after a bit of rain. Once you are on the trail, you quickly leave the world behind you and are surrounded by nature. We were in no rush...as we said, the weather was great and we were the only ones on the trail.

Kalispell: Your Winter Recreation Wonderland
You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy Kalispell’s magical winter playground. From snowshoeing to Avalanche Lake in Glacier National Park or piercing the deep backcountry on snowmobiles, to skiing the steeps at Whitefish Mountain Resort to ice-skating in Woodland Park, Kalispell offers nonstop adventures for snowy winter days. Discover the winter wonderland of your dreams at
Glacier National Park gets buried in snow each winter, and it defines quiet solitude. A pair of snowshoes or backcountry skis can take you to sites — and sights — few ever see this time of year. You might even glimpse a wolf or mountain lion. Favorite areas include MacDonald Lake and Going-to-the-Sun Road.
Snowshoeing is available on the unlimited backcountry wilderness trails in Northwest Montana or if you are interested in a guided hike, Glacier offers guided hikes every Saturday, beginning at the Apgar Visitor Center at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Equipment is available for a small donation.
Cross-country skiers can choose from miles of groomed trails around the Flathead Valley. Jump onto eight kilometers of groomed skate and Nordic trails right in town behind Flathead Valley Community College — the perfect midday escape — or head for nearby Foy’s to Blacktail Trails, Whitefish Lake Golf Course, Round Meadows, Bigfork Nordic Center or the Blacktail Nordic ski trails. Find more info with the Glacier Nordic Club and North Shore Nordic Club.
Kalispell is conveniently located between two ski areas, Blacktail Mountain and Whitefish Mountain Resort. Both offer big, wide-open skiing and gorgeous mountain vistas in a relaxed atmosphere.
Snowmobiling is popular in Kalispell for a reason. Northwest Montana boasts more than 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. Another 2,000 miles of Forest Service roads lead to spectacular ridge top views. Find more info with the Flathead Snowmobile Association. You can get rentals and good tips on local trails at Winter Wonderland Sports and Swan Mountain Snowmobiling.
Dogsledding is an old-school thrill. If you love dogs and the great outdoors, it’s the perfect blend of adventure and fun. Dog Sled Adventures is locally owned and operated.
Ice-skating and hockey are favorite winter pastimes in Kalispell, too. Woodland Park, right in downtown Kalispell, offers a hockey rink as well as skating on a large pond that is maintained and open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Enjoy an affordable activity with your entire family.
For the anglers, Kalispell has 500 fishable lakes out our backdoor. Pick one and start drilling for a great day of ice fishing.
When your toes need warming, your cheeks need a rest from cheering and/or your growling stomach can’t be satiated with snacks, head “home” to Kalispell — where a roaring fire, lively night spots and fine restaurants await.

California Camping @ Yosemite Ridge RV Park
There's only 15 RV sites here at Yosemite Ridge, but they are surrounded by green grass and you're not sitting on your neighbor's back yard. The park is only 12 miles from the north gate of Yosemite National Park, so if you want to see Yosemite, but can't get a site in the Valley, this would be your next best bet. They also have several cabins, so you don't even have to bring an RV, or you can use the cabins to bring along friends that do not have camping equipment.
In addition to the main attraction, Yosemite, there are other day trips that you can enjoy such as visiting Sonora and Columbia State Park (old-fashioned mining town - you are not allowed to drive motor vehicles inside the town boundaries); you can visit the fish hatchery at the bottom of the hill to the west; you can enjoy Groveland and some of their historical buildings and sites; or you can spend a day up in the high country, Tuolumne Meadows and Hetch-hetchy Reservoir. There are trails from Tuolumne that take you to the top of Yosemite Falls and some of the granite domes that are seen from Yosemite Valley.
A meal or two at the Buck Meadows restaurant is worth every penny. Be sure you to say, Hi! for me to Joe McGrath, and tell them CamperRick sent you!

Rocky Mountain National Park - Colorado
08/11/14
We spent a couple nights at Elk Creek Campground & RV Park, 143 County Rd. 48 (Golf Course Rd.), Grand Lake, CO. 80447 (970) 627-8502 elkcreekcamp.com As you can see they had some resident moose camping there as well.
This gave us easy access to Rocky Mountain National Park. From Mexico to Alaska, for 2,700 miles the great Rocky Mountain chain forms the backbone of North America, the world's longest mountain barrier. We explored the Trail Ridge Rd which is the highest major highway in North America topping out at 12, 183 feet above sea level. Here is one of the most expansive areas of Alpine terrain in the United States. Nearly one-third of the park is above treeline - 11,400 feet of elevation in the park, the limit above which conditions are too harsh for trees to grow. The park holds 72 named peaks above 12,000 feet of elevation. Long's Peak is at 14,259 feet.

Oregon Trails: Cemetery
By many accounts the first well known observance of a Memorial Day type observance was in Charleston, South Carolina on May 1st of 1865. On May 5th of 1868, a call was made for an annual and nationwide observance on May 30th, because it did not fall on the anniversary of any battle. In recent years, it's been on the last Monday in May, but for nearly a hundred years was May 30th.
