Haveli of Mirza Ghalib in Old Delhi
Within the overwhelming maze that is Chandni Chowk, Ghalib ki Haveli sits with a lightness of being you would associate with the man himself. Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan, also known as Ghalib, channelled all the tragedy that life threw at him into some of the most beautiful Urdu poetry that was always witty, often sardonic, but rarely bitter.
Ghalib ki Haveli in Ballimaran, Chandni Chowk is a Mughal-era structure that is nearly 300 years old. The haveli was gifted to Ghalib by a local Hakim, an ardent admirer of the poet. It is here that Ghalib spent the last 10 years of his life before he passed away in February 1869. The haveli has changed several hands since—serving as everything from a home to a wedding hall—before finally being granted heritage status in 1997.
here are a few of his original manuscripts on display, with his poetry quilled in beautiful script (with handy translations alongside). Also on display are some clothes that belonged to Ghalib and his wife—helpful reminders of the people who lived within these walls a few hundred years ago.

MIRZA GHALIB KI HAVELI DELHI
Mirza Ghalib's Tomb at Nizamuddin, Delhi
The grave of Mirza Asadullah Khan 'Ghalib,' (1797-1869) is located north of the enclosure of Chaunsath Khamba, close to the Nizamuddin shrine in Nizamuddin West. Mirza Ghalib, as he is popularly known, is considered the Urdu Shakespeare and was the greatest poet of the nineteenth century. He was a great writer of ghazals, the lyrical love poems of Urdu. He was a friend of the Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah 'Zafar' and was appointed the teacher of Bahadur Shah II. Mirza Ghalib's grave is covered by a marble structure and is within a small courtyard, which is always locked. The little cemetery has a few more graves set around the grave of the great poet and is located next to the large Ghalib Academy. The Ghalib Academy was established by the government and has an extensive library of Urdu Literature. It also houses a well-maintained museum. The museum has a large collection of rocks, paintings and works of the great poet, who described Delhi as 'the Soul of the World'.
Visitors can enter the tomb from the lanes of the Nizamuddin village. It is not mandatory to pay any money to the families living just before the tomb but you can still get their good wishes and some relevant information by giving them some baksheesh.
Nizamuddin West is a historic neighbourhood and one the colonies of South Delhi across Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station. This upscale locality is named after 13th century Sufi saint, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, whose dargah is situated within the area. Nizamuddin West is a posh colony. The Residential Welfare Association (RWA) of Nizamuddin is working for this area to make it more secure and peaceful for the people of this colony. The colony is divided into six blocks and has the main entry point near the petrol pump at the Mathura Road. The area is greener because it has a lot of parks. Nizamuddin Basti (Village) is in the close vicinity of this area. This colony is regarded as one of the posh Muslim colonies. The prices of the houses in this area are on a steady rise.
The enclave of Hazrat Nizamuddin in the heart of New Delhi is a medieval village or basti (settlement) named after the highly venerated 14th century Sufi saint, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. Home to a number of medieval and Mughal era tombs and monuments, the principal attraction in the Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti is the Dargah of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, an important site of pilgrimage. The Dargah is a significant repository of the cultural heritage of Sufi philosophy and spirituality and its veneration through the vernacular poetry of Amir Khusrau and the stirring Qawwali performances. In keeping with the pluralistic Sufi traditions millions from across all faiths visit the Dargah annually.

Ghalib lived in this Haveli for a long period of his life after he came from Agra. While staying at this Haveli, he wrote his Urdu and Persian ‘diwans’.Many a year after Ghalib's death the place housed shops inside it until the year of 1999 after which the govt. acquired a portion of it and renovated it bringing back its old world Mughal magnificence & splendour. It was given a special touch with the use of Mughal Lakhori bricks, sandstone & a wooden entrance gate to obtain that feeling of the 19th century period.

Ghalib ki Haveli || Gali Qasim Jaan, Ballimaran
Down a quiet Ballimaran lane in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk stands a haveli like many others in this historic part of the Indian capital. An old dilapidated structure with a semi-circular brick arch as its entrance, this mansion was once home to Mirza Asadullah Khan, better known as Ghalib, one of India’s most celebrated and quoted Urdu poets.
Ghalib was born to Mirza Abdullah Beg in December 1797 in Agra. His father died when he was hardly five years old and his childhood was spent with his uncle who passed away when Ghalib was eight, and mostly his aunts. Married in 1810 at the age of 13 to Umrao Begum, Ghalib soon left his birth city Agra for Delhi, a city where he lived until his death in 1869.
The haveli was presented to Ghalib by a hakim (traditional physician) who was an ardent fan of his poetry. It was here that Ghalib wrote some of his finest ghazals and recited them to a huge audience every evening. After Ghalib’s death in 1869, the crestfallen hakim who had presented the haveli to Ghalib would go and sit there for hours every evening refusing to let anyone occupy it.
The government took possession of the haveli in 1964 but soon auctioned it to one Mohammed Ali Farooqi whose bid was the highest at ₹ 22,400. He rented it out to tenants but a few years later he died without leaving a legal heir to the property. Since then, the haveli has changed multiple hands, from being the poet’s abode to a coal store, a small manufacturing unit, to a baraat ghar (wedding hall). In 1999, a part of the haveli was finally acquired and restored by the Delhi government.
Now a heritage site under the aegis of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the memorial museum displays the objects and other things used during those times to make it look like the actual dwelling of the poet. As soon as one enters, a huge portrait of Ghalib’s couplets in his own handwriting can be seen hung on the sidewall. Further ahead, the couplets of Ustaad Zauq, Abu Zafar, Momin Khan Momin, and other noted contemporaries of Ghalib have been creatively arranged in the vast collage.
Another wall sheds some light on Ghalib’s personal favorites. While his trademark ‘baalon wali lambi topi’ and ‘lamba kurta’ are listed as among his favorite attire, a chart shows Ghalib’s favourite dishes – taley hue kabab, bhuna gosht, sohan halwa, aam ka achaar and dal murabba. There is also list mentioning activities he took an avid interest in like patangbaazi (kite flying), chausar (cross and circle board game that originated in ancient India) and shatranj (chess).

Mirza Ghalib ki Haveli | What To See In India? | Travel Vlog
Mirza Asadullah Khan (1797-1869) who wrote with a nom de plume of Asad before choosing Ghalib, which literally means overcoming or overpowering, hailed from a Central Asian family of Aibak Turks who served traditionally as soldier s. Unlike his grandfather who had migrated to India during the reign of Sah Alam II to join army, and his father who also followed the same profession and was killed in an army action in Alwar, Ghalib excelled brilliantly as a poet, prose writer, diarist, and a writer of engrossingly intimate letters. He was born in Agra where the family had settled. He lost his father at the age of five and was brought up by his uncle who also passed away four years later after which he was taken care of by his maternal grandfather. Married at an early age of thirteen, he moved to Delhi where he kept shifting his residence as a tenant in the vicinity of what is now known as old Delhi till he settled down in yet another rented accommodation in a locality called Ballimaran where he died in pain and penury.
