5 Year Old Sponsored Surfer // Waikiki Beach, Hawaii
Tyler Purcell is a 5 year old surfer sponsored by Moku Surf shop! He's one of the youngest sponsored surfers in the world that'll melt your heart with his infectious smile!
Enjoy the video highlighting Tyler's love for surfing and the roots of how his Dad taught him at18 months old. It has grown in to an incredible bond between Tyler, Zak (his father) and a mutual love for the ocean.
I want to thank Moku surf shop for being so involved in the community and providing the groms a place to call home in the heart of Waikiki. It truly is an Ohana there and I loved seeing it! Keeping the boardshop vibes alive is difficult with online sales/media now, but they are keeping it alive and spreading the aloha daily!

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii - Downtown Kona (2018)
Kona is a moku or district on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi in the State of Hawaii. In the current system of administration of Hawaiʻi County, the moku of Kona is divided into North Kona District (Kona ‘Akau) and South Kona District (Kona Hema). The term Kona is sometimes used inaccurately to refer to its largest town, Kailua-Kona. Other towns in Kona include Kealakekua, Keauhou, Holualoa, Hōnaunau and Honalo.
In the Hawaiian language, kona means leeward or dry side of the island, as opposed to ko‘olau which means windward or the wet side of the island. In the times of Ancient Hawaiʻi, Kona was the name of the leeward district on each major island. In Hawai‘i, the Pacific anticyclone provides moist prevailing northeasterly winds to the Hawaiian islands, resulting in rain when the winds contact the windward landmass of the islands – the winds subsequently lose their moisture and travel on to the leeward (or kona) side of the island. When this pattern reverses, it can produce a Kona storm from the west. Kona has cognates with the same meaning in other Polynesian languages. In Tongan, the equivalent cognate would be tonga; for windward, the associated cognate would be tokelau.
Kona is the home of the world-famous Ironman World Championship Triathlon which is held each year in October in Kailua-Kona. The Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park marks the place where Captain James Cook was killed in 1779. Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park and Honokohau Settlement and Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park are in Kona.
The volcanic slopes of Hualālai and Mauna Loa in the Kona district provide an ideal microclimate for growing coffee. Kona coffee is considered one of the premium specialty coffees of the world.
In pop culture, the region served as the basis of the Beach Boys' song Kona Coast from their 1978 album M.I.U. Album.
Kona is the home of one of the main bases of the international Christian mission organization YWAM, and the University of the Nations, first founded here.

Hawaii Wisdom Project presents Tom Pohaku Stone
The Hawaii Wisdom Project is a documentary in which we interview Hawaii’s most influential leaders and ask their advice on success. The purpose of the film is to enlighten and motivate Hawaii’s youth to strive for success by allowing them the opportunity to meet some of the most powerful and inspiring members of the local community.
In this webisode, we interview the legendary native Hawaiian surfer and waterman, Tom Pohaku Stone. He has been on a life long journey in search of his cultural heritage and through his career as a pro surfer, Pohaku, searches for clarity and unity between his pride as a waterman and what he deeply feels should be his pride as a Hawaiian. Using his love of he'e nalu (surfing) and his culture as a focal point Pohaku has spent the last ten years at the University of Hawaii , gaining his masters degree in Pacific Island Studies, specializing in ancient Hawaiian sports. He is credited with single handedly revitalizing the sport of he'e holua (Hawaiian sledding), a centuries old extreme sport, and for the past several years he has been sharing his knowledge and his aloha as a teacher and craftsman, instructing students in the arts of sled building and ancient surf board carving. He also hand crafts surfboards and holua sleds using traditional Hawaiian methods and designs.

Hurricane Lane is a powerful tropical cyclone currently approaching the Hawaiian Islands, the strongest hurricane in the central Pacific since Ioke in 2006, and the first Category 5 Pacific hurricane since Patricia in 2015. The twelfth named storm, sixth hurricane, and fourth major hurricane of the 2018 Pacific hurricane season, began monitoring the system.[14] At that time, Lane began a weakening trend, as it encountered increasing wind shear from the west-southwest, falling to Category 3 status six hours later.[15] Despite repeated forecasts calling for the storm to begin weakening, Lane stabilized at an intensity around 125 mph (205 km/h) until 21:00 UTC on August 20, when it reattained Category 4 status.[16][17] Afterward, Lane continued to strengthen. Early on August 22, aircraft reconnaissance data indicated that Lane had intensified into a Category 5 hurricane, with 1-minute sustained winds of 160 mph (260 km/h).[18][19] Several hours later, Lane weakened back into a high-end Category 4 hurricane.

Maximum sustained winds are 130 knots (150 mph; 240 km/h), with gusts to 160 knots (185 mph; 295 km/h). The minimum barometric pressure is 935 mbar (hPa; 27.61 inHg), and the system is moving west-northwest at 7 knots (8 mph; 13 km/h). Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 km) and tropical storm-force winds extend up to 140 miles (220 km) from the center of Lane.

Preparations
On August 21, as Lane approached the Hawaiian Islands, a hurricane watch was issued for Maui County and Hawaii County.[20] Early on the next day, the hurricane watch for Hawaii County was upgraded to a hurricane warning.[21]
University of Hawaii at Manoa students who were staying on the campus were advised to stay informed and download alert apps, and to store basic emergency supplies such as flashlights, first aid kits, food and water. The University initiated emergency protocols on August 22, and a University spokesperson stated that there was two weeks worth of food and water stored in case of a severe emergency.[22]
Maui County and Big Island school districts closed August 22 for an undetermined period of time, and all non-essential state employees on the Big Island and Maui were told to stay home between August 22–24. Hawaiian Airlines waived the change fees for tickets to, from, within, and through Hawaii from August 21–26.[23]
On August 22 at 21:00 UTC, Fort Shafter announced that all Navy vessels and Air Force planes were being moved out of state due to the anticipated impact of Hurricane Lane.[24]
Hilo, Hawaii
Hilo (Hee-lo) moku was a busy farming and fishing area in ancient times, then evolved into a commercial center for the sugar industry. The town of Hilo, built around the crescent-shaped bay, became the seat of county government. In 1946 it was nearly swallowed by a tsunami, and another hit in 1960. But Hilo's waterfront was rebuilt, and today downtown is an appealing area with restored clapboard buildings, good restaurants, museums, art galleries, a farmer's market and interesting little shops—all of it great for exploring on foot.
Hilo, with its own international airport, is growing into a small city. It's always lush and green thanks to being blessed with generous rainfall—though some locals swear most of that must come only between bedtime and breakfast.
On the outskirts of town there's more—lush parks, pocket beaches, storybook waterfalls, tropical gardens. Bring an umbrella if you wish, but definitely bring yourself to Hilo if you want a true sense of the Big Island.
