Tuscan Truffle Hunting Tour in San Miniato details:
- The pickup time was at 10 am in front of the National Library which was an easy 15 min walk from our AirBNB.
- I booked the excursion online. The excursion costs 350 euros for two people.
- Came with a 3 course lunch with truffles and wine tasting
- If you have a car and just want to join the truffle hunting, you can do that. There was a couple in our tour that drove here themselves. They said they found them online and booked it on their own. - I also read that leaving from the San Miniato train station takes about a 15 minute taxi ride that costs €25 each way. It takes about 30 minutes to take the train from Florence.
- DO BORROW their boots because the forest is often muddy.
- October and November has the best climate for truffle hunting. Although I'm here in October, today wasn't the best climate for truffle hunting because it wasn't cold and wet enough.
Truffle Hunting Dog Details!
In Italy, the use of pigs has been prohibited since 1985. The pigs dig into the ground looking for truffles and harms the entire truffle ecosystem in the process. With dogs, they can smell the truffle and alert their owners. The owner then carefully digs up the truffle and then closes the hole back up for future truffles to grow back. Dogs like Choco cost up to $10,000 US!
Next stop: wine tasting!
This winery started in 1535. They not only produce wines - they also produce olives. They breed Cinta Senese to produce salami and prosciutto. Cinta Senese is a breed of Italian pig from the province of Siena, in Tuscany. They also produce honey and produce and everything is organic!
The big barrels can be reused for 15 to 16 years. These barrels are huge! The big barrow gives the wine a freshness and fruitier taste. The small barrels are only used for 3 years. After 3 years the barrel absorbs too much wine to be reused.
The green glass on top of the barrel allows the gas created by fermentation to escape while not allowing air back in. This cool contraption was invented by Leonardo Da Vinci.
After the tour we got to taste their wines along with some salami and prosciutto. They add fennel seeds into the salami. It was very good!
Why does Florence, Italy bread have no salt?
The bread made in this region of Italy has no salt added. I didn't know that as it was my first time trying saltless bread. I'll have to admit I like my bread with some sodium. Bread from Tuscany and Florentine and maybe some other places near by don't add salt to their bread. There are many reasons for this: I don't know which one is true. But here goes: salt used to be heavily taxed so to save some money they stopped adding salt to their bread. Another reason is during war between Pisa and Florence the Pisan army set up a blockade on the Arno River to prevent salt shipments from reaching Florence. Without salt, bakers just continued baking their bread without the salt. Last reason is Tuscan cuisine tend to be on the saltier side so the bread is to help eat the salty food.
Final STOP: Plaza Michelangelo. He was willing to drop us off there instead so we can catch the sunset.
It was nice because this place was on my list to visit and it saved me a hike up the hill to get there.
The view up here is amazing! You can see the entire city of Florence from here. It was a bit cloudy to see the sunset, but it was still very nice.

Visit to Florence Tuscany Italy
Arriving Florence Italy, the Renaissance City. Taking the tram from Telenti into Florence city center and exploring in the early afternoon and evening. I have to admit Florence was even busier than I had expected, by far the busiest city I have visited in Tuscany so far on this Italy trip.
Florence is in Tuscany or Toscana Italia, and is a busy tourist city. While there is no end to the list of places to see and things to do in Florence, there are also long queues to get into most of the museums and major attractions so it is well worth pre-booking your ticket to save standing in a queue for 4 hours, even if it does mean that your holiday and visit to Florence will be a little less flexible.
WE HAD AN INCIDENT IN ITALY | ISCHIA vlog + thermal spa & what to see
Yeah, we got a little accident with our rental car in Ischia. Up the hills in Downtown Ischia is the worst place to drive! Even taxi drivers are afraid to drive there! It was difficult to get in and out of our hotel but we decided to make the best of our 3 days there. We explored the island (Ischia Porto, Ischia Ponte, Forio, Sant' Angelo) and spent a day at the Negombo Thermal Park. #ischia #italy #travelvlog #vlog #thermalspa
p.s it's better to rent a scooter but you need an international drivers license in Italy and Canadians need to get one, don't do the same mistake we did! ;)

Amerigo Vespucci's grave, Church of All Saints, Florence, Tuscany, Italy, Europe
Amerigo Vespucci (March 9, 1454 – February 22, 1512) was an Italian explorer, financier, navigator and cartographer who first demonstrated that Brazil and the West Indies did not represent Asia's eastern outskirts as initially conjectured from Columbus' voyages, but instead constituted an entirely separate landmass hitherto unknown to Old Worlders. Colloquially referred to as the New World, this second super continent came to be termed America, deriving its name from Americus, the Latin version of Vespucci's first name. At the invitation of king Manuel I of Portugal, Vespucci participated as observer in several voyages that explored the east coast of South America between 1499 and 1502. On the first of these voyages he was aboard the ship that discovered that South America extended much further south than previously thought. The expeditions became widely known in Europe after two accounts attributed to Vespucci were published between 1502 and 1504. In 1507, Martin Waldseemüller produced a world map on which he named the new continent America after the feminine Latin version of Vespucci's first name, which is Americus. In an accompanying book, Waldseemüller published one of the Vespucci accounts, which led to criticism that Vespucci was trying to upset Christopher Columbus' glory. However, the rediscovery in the 18th century of other letters by Vespucci has led to the view that the early published accounts, notably the Soderini Letter, could be fabrications, not by Vespucci, but by others. In 1508, the position of chief of navigation of Spain (piloto mayor de Indias) was created for Vespucci, with the responsibility of planning navigation for voyages to the Indies. Two letters attributed to Vespucci were published during his lifetime. Mundus Novus (New World) was a Latin translation of a lost Italian letter sent from Lisbon to Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici. It describes a voyage to South America in 1501–1502. Mundus Novus was published in late 1502 or early 1503 and soon reprinted and distributed in numerous European countries. Lettera di Amerigo Vespucci delle isole nuovamente trovate in quattro suoi viaggi (Letter of Amerigo Vespucci concerning the isles newly discovered on his four voyages), known as Lettera al Soderini or just Lettera, was a letter in Italian addressed to Piero Soderini. Printed in 1504 or 1505, it claimed to be an account of four voyages to the Americas made by Vespucci between 1497 and 1504. A Latin translation was published by the German Martin Waldseemüller in 1507 in Cosmographiae Introductio, a book on cosmography and geography, as Quattuor Americi Vespucij navigationes (Four Voyages of Amerigo Vespucci). On March 22, 1508, King Ferdinand made Vespucci chief navigator of Spain at a huge salary and commissioned him to found a school of navigation, in order to standardize and modernize navigation techniques used by Iberian sea captains then exploring the world. Vespucci even developed a rudimentary, but fairly accurate method of determining longitude (which only more accurate chronometers would later improve upon). In the 18th century, three unpublished familiar letters from Vespucci to Lorenzo de' Medici were rediscovered. One describes a voyage made in 1499–1500 which corresponds with the second of the four voyages. Another was written from Cape Verde in 1501 in the early part of the third of the four voyages, before crossing the Atlantic. The third letter was sent from Lisbon after the completion of that voyage. Some have suggested that Vespucci, in the two letters published in his lifetime, was exaggerating his role and constructed deliberate fabrications. However, many scholars now believe that the two letters were not written by him but were fabrications by others based in part on genuine letters by Vespucci. It was the publication and widespread circulation of the letters that might have led Waldseemüller to name the new continent America on his world map of 1507 in Lorraine. Vespucci used a Latinised form of his name, Americus Vespucius, in his Latin writings, which Waldseemüller used as a base for the new name, taking the feminine form America, according to the prevalent view (for other hypotheses, see the footnote in the introduction). The book accompanying the map stated: I do not see what right any one would have to object to calling this part, after Americus who discovered it and who is a man of intelligence, Amerige, that is, the Land of Americus, or America: since both Europa and Asia got their names from women. It is possible that Vespucci was not aware that Waldseemüller had named the continent after him. The two disputed letters claim that Vespucci made four voyages to America, while at most two can be verified from other sources.

I WENT TO SIENA, ITALY!
Took an early morning train ride to Siena and spent the day there with my cousin. I fell in love with Siena from the movie Letters to Juliet, so getting to see it in person was an amazing experience! :)
