Monteverde Costa Rica Night Walk and Tour at Valle Escondido
For our night hike / tour, we were shuttled to Valle Escondido Preserve about 5:00pm straight from our lodge. The area of Monteverde, during our stay, was really windy and the location of the night hike was no different, super windy.
When we arrived we were greeted by our guide and were given our flashlights. We still had a few minutes until the night hike started so I ran down and got a time lapse of the sunset... stunning!
Once we got down into the jungle / forest a bit, the wind wasn't as bad but you could still see and hear it blowing fiercely above us. Our guide showed us everything he could find but apparently the strong winds kept a lot of the night life out of the trees.
We saw several types of birds, spiders, and ants but that was about it. A bit disappointing, but to no fault of our tour guide or the establishment. You can't make animals appear on demand unless you're at a zoo or Disneyland :)
Overall, just being in the forest, in central america, in Costa Rica, in Monteverde... in the middle of nowhere was really awesome. Although we didn't see much, just being out in nature was awesome. Highly recommend the night tour and walk at Valle Escondido Preserve.
On a technical note, I tried shooting this footage with my GoPro Hero4 Silver in low light mode at 1080p / 60fps and think it turned out pretty good.
Comment if you've had better luck with other settings in low light situations.
Monteverde Night Tour, Costa Rica
A walk through the Hidden Valley offers a really nice experience of the Monteverde Cloud Forest. You can see tarantulas, birds, agouties, gray foxes and many species that come out at night.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Walk, Costa Rica | Vlog 26
Finally made it to Costa Rica, despite Shannon deciding to break her wrist snowboarding a week before we leave. Oh well, I guess it just makes traveling that more interesting. We did a night tour before this, which was worth it for the $25 each. This day tour cost us $30 each, which included transportation from hotel to the reserve.
When at the reserve, you can pay the $15 per person each to get a guided tour, which was worth it in our opinion. All together, it took about 2 1/2 hours and just in case bring a rain jacket. We saw lots of birds, plants, and trees around this area. If your looking for a sloth, you have a better chance around Arenal area.
Distance from San Jose to Monteverde was about 138 km, which the last part (19 km) being a dirt and rocky road. Its advised to have a rental that has clearance. It took about 3 hours to drive to Monteverde, with only a few toll stations along the main hwy.

CLOUD FOREST IN MONTEVERDE - COSTA RICA VLOG PART 4
In part four of my Costa Rica vlog series, we travel by bus to Monteverde. This mountain town is well-known for its awesome cloud forests and wildlife sightings. We got to see a sloth up close during another night hike and we explored the tree tops in one of the cloud forests in the region. Monteverde was like no other area we visited in Costa Rica. It felt like stepping into another country for a few days, the climate was different to the rain forest tropics and the mountainous region was as windy as Cape Town! I recommend checking this area out if you're ever visiting Costa Rica.

Costa Rica - Monteverde:
Monteverde, Costa Rica is a small town in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, located in the Cordillera de Tilarán. Roughly a four hour drive from the Central Valley, Monteverde is considered a major ecotourism destination in Costa Rica. The area is host to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and numerous other reserves, which draw considerable numbers of tourists and naturalists.
National Geographic has called the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve the jewel in the crown of cloud forest reserves. Newsweek has declared Monteverde the world's #14 Place to Remember Before it Disappears. By popular vote in Costa Rica, Monteverde was enshrined as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Costa Rica, along with Isla del Coco, Volcán Arenal, Cerro Chirripó, Río Celeste, Tortuguero, and Volcán Poás.
This article deals with Monteverde and its surrounding zone. This includes the larger town and tourism hub Santa Elena, as well as the nearby cluster of homes and businesses known as Cerro Plano, along with numerous reserves and attractions on the periphery of the town.
Climate
Resting roughly at 1,400 metres (4,600 ft) above sea level, Monteverde is misty, humid, and windy, with a mean annual temperature of 18 °C (64 °F) (Nadkarni 2000: 17). Annual rainfall averages around 3,000 millimetres (118 in). Humidity oscillates between 74% and 97% (Nadkarni 2000: 34).
In recent years rapidly increasing numbers of tourists has brought a sizeable influx of Costa Ricans into the area. Now, an estimated 250,000 tourists visit Monteverde a year. Improved goods and services, including partially paved roads, have arrived in recent years. In 2007, Costa Ricans voted Monteverde one of Costa Rica's Seven Wonders, along with Isla del Coco, Tortuguero, Arenal Volcano, Cerro Chirripó, Rio Celeste and Poás Volcano.
Nature
One of the many eco-tourism oriented suspension bridges in the area. (Selvatura Park)
Due to the acclaimed rain forests and cloud forests in the greater Monteverde area, Monteverde has become a major part of the Costa Rican tourist trail - despite difficult access. It was recently voted one of the 7 Wonders of Costa Rica by the Costa Rican newspaper La Nación.Of Monteverde's total 250,000 annual tourists, around 70,000 tourists visit the reserve.
The bulk of Monteverde's rain forest and cloud forest can be found in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, a private nature reserve created in 1972 by scientist George Powell and Quaker Wilford Guindon. The area around the park entrance is the most visited, though camping deep in the reserve is possible with reservations. Nine main trails, which total 13 km, are well-kept and easy to access. The reserve features a large network of less accessible trails and a number of rustic research stations, two of which house 10 persons each, as well as one research station that can house as many as 43 persons, though these can now only be used by researchers.
To the West of the town of Monteverde lies the Bosque Eterno de los Niños conservation area, a project funded by schools and children from all over the world. The Bosque Eterno is the largest preserve in the area with 22,000 hectares (54,000 acres). Most of the Bosque Eterno lands surround the Bosque Nuboso lands to the North, East, and South of the smaller Bosque Noboso preserve. Bajo del Tigre, a small section of the Bosque Eterno de los Niños, is known for birdwatching and night hikes.
Still farther north, past Santa Elena, is the Reserva Santa Elena. This area is visited less frequently by tourists than the Monteverde Reserve, but offers a rustic station and views of Arenal Volcano.

Monteverde, is an environmental playground where nature rules and conservation is part of everyday life.
Eco-tourism was born in the Monteverde Cloud forest, as well as innovative ways to experience the wonders of the area, such as canopy tours through the trees and hanging bridges connecting mountains.
This magical world is filled with exotic wildlife and vegetation in numbers too large to count.
Monteverde, which means Green Mountain sits on top of a 3500 foot plateau just above the Cordillera de Tilaran, a bumpy offshoot from the Inter-American Highway.
A typical Costa Rican dirt road winds in and around the hills, ridges and valleys of the Tilaran Mountain Range, leading into the yellowish grasslands, speckled with a few surviving strands of tropical dry forest.
The forest is made up of mangoes, espaves, mayflowers, coyol palms, bastard cedars, gumbo-limbos and wild cottons. Climbing higher the vegetation becomes more underdeveloped and mangled, confirmation of the brutal winds that rage in this area.
At the peak, the road is shrouded with fog and mist, even during the dry season, but the cloud forest of this biological reserve only begins after reaching the town of Monteverde.

July 2019 Nancy and I spent the day at national park. We hiked about 3 miles and climed an equal elevaion of 24 floors. Got to see the amazing natural beauty. At about 5000 feet above sea level the rain forest is blanketed in clouds most days providing moisture for the plants. We spotted the two toed sloth and pack of coati's with no fear of humans. Not many birds on this day.
