The Monument to the Fallen of the First World War of Ancona is located in Piazza IV Novembre, in the Passetto district ; in Ancona it is simply called the Monument, par excellence . It is located at the end of the long Viale della Vittoria and is connected to the underlying Passetto beach through a wide staircase that, at a certain point, is divided into two semi-circular ramps.
It was designed in the twenties , together with the Scalinata del Passetto, by the Anconetan architect Guido Cirilli in the form of a circular temple ( monoptero ) characterized by an elegantly reinterpreted Doric order. The building has eight fluted columns , is placed above a concentric circular staircase and is made entirely of Istrian stone . The base is decorated with helmets and swords , respectively symbols of defense and attack. In the middle there is a small altar .
Widespread is the belief that, seen from the sea, the entire structure, including the steps, look like an eagle in flight, with ramps that symbolize the open wings, and the monument that is crowned head. If this is the impression one may have, surely the effect had not been foreseen by architect Cirilli when he designed the monument.
Here are celebrated the most important national events , such as the Anniversary of the victory in the First World War - Festival of the Armed Forces (November 4) and the Republic Day (June 2); also the Liberation Day on April 25th is celebrated here first, and then at the impressive monument to the Resistance site on the Pincio .
In the pine forest located near the Monument there are games for children, a lift that leads to the underlying beach of the Passetto and the terminus of the trolley and bus lines. The pinewood has also sometimes been one of the markets that are held from 1 to 4 May during the traditional fair of San Ciriaco .
The monument to the fallen is a reference point and meeting place for many citizens, who in the beautiful days like to sit on the steps around it to admire the Adriatic Sea and then walk along the Viale della Vittoria, or stop in the green of the nearby pine forest.

War Memorial, Como, Lombardy, Italy, Europe
The War Memorial Como is an imposing tower, 30 meters high, opened by large windows and completely lined with stone of Aurisina and Reppen. Inside, above the basement there is a monolith of granite I lift a weight of 40 tons of coated diorite Anzola, engraved with the names of the 650 fallen comaschi the First World War. Going down the circular scale is reached where the lower floor in a space rotated 90 ° there is an altar; here inside the base there was the shrine. On the side facing the lake is carved the phrase: TONIGHT IS SLEEPING IN TRIESTE OR IN HEAVEN WITH HEROES. October 10, 1916 - Antonio Sant'Elia On the back instead: WITH KARST STONE CITY ENHANCES THE GLORY OF HIS CHILDREN. Rises to public gardens, lakeside, next to Volta Temple and near the Stadium Giuseppe Sinigaglia. The monument was inspired by a sketch done in colored pencils and watercolor painted in 1914 by futurist Antonio Sant'Elia, one of the most illustrious Como fallen of the Great War precisely remember from the monument. The project hypothetical Sant'Elia meant a hydroelectric plant. At first there was a first draft the special contest winner (1925 grade I, grade II in 1926) designed by the architect Federico Frigerio, but was blocked by the authorities. Meanwhile makes its way the hypothesis to build the monument in a lakefront location and is asked to draft a proposal Terragni. The project presented by Terragni provided a setting of two parallel vertical plates perforated and that contained in the cavity space celebratory. Visiting Como breaks into the debate on the monument also the founder of the Futurist movement that aims to create Marinetti (instead of the proposed Terragni) a feasible implementation of the design of the power plant (ie a lighthouse tower) of Sant'Elia, reiterated as martyr war, Como founder and architect of the Futurist movement. Despite the criticism of the Persian storcimento about the monument of the project of a power plant, the noted futurist painter Enrico Prampolini in 1930 takes the task of turning the design of Sant'Elia in an architectural and below you begin construction under the direction of Attilio Terragni, brother of Joseph. Soon turns out to be the failure of the project due to lack of technical drawings. So to open yard Terragni is called to intervene. Forced by events to abandon its proposal, completes the design prepared by Prampolini eliminating decorations rhetorical, finishing the shape of large blocks, inserting the top two lanterns (unrealized) and designing the crypt and the chapel. So Giuseppe Terragni are the architectural decisions, the choice of materials and the study of the interior. The monument, fully completed, will be inaugurated on November 4 1933, dedicated to all fallen in particular to St. Elias, author of the drawings from which the Terragni was inspired to build the futuristic monument. The large size of the monument and visible even after turning it into a major tourist attraction of the city.
