Spanish Food Tour at Central Market in Valencia, Spain
Join us for a Spanish Food Tour in Valencia, Spain at central market (mercado central) as we sample many tasty savory and sweet bites. Located just a stone throw away from our apartment we visited the mercat central on an almost daily basis to pick-up groceries such as fresh produce and delicious local meats and cheeses. However, our mission was different this time. Our plan was to visit the Central Market in Valencia to have as many tasty Spanish snacks as we possibly could handle including both savory and sweet items. With this in mind we ate the following food items:
1) Sandwich with serrano ham (Bocadillo de jamón serrano)
2) Ham and cheese in a cup (Jamón serrano y queso)
3) Empanadas with tuna and onion (Empanadilla de atún y cebolla)
4) Spanish Tortilla with chorizo slices (Tortilla española con chorizo)
5) Almond and sugar cakes (Mantecadas y polvorones)
6) Pig's ear or Elephant ear pastries (Palmeras)
7) Fruit juice (Zumo de frutas)

Spanish Food Tour at Central Market in Valencia, Spain Video Transcript:
Today's video is going to be a food adventure. We're making our way over to the Central Market here in Valencia (Mercado Central de Valencia). Which is right outside our door. We had views from our apartment window overlooking the market just footsteps away. We've already been a few times to do our grocery shopping but we also noticed they have lots of tasty bites so you can actually turn your visit into a meal. So that is what we're planning to do. I've even got my little grocery bag in case we see something for dinner. That is the plan. Let's go eat Spanish food.
Our first snack of the day is going to be a sandwich filled with jamón serrano (Bocadillo de jamón serrano). That means ham from the mountains from the sierras. I'm just opening it up here. Look at that. A thing of beauty in the sandwich. They asked me if I wanted olive oil drizzled all over it so I was like yeah! It was only 1 Euro.
Time for our second snack here at the market. Alright second tasty snack. And this one is only 2 Euros so we're having Serrano ham. There we go Jamón serrano y queso right? And this one is only 2 Euros.
This is our third snack right here. It is called empanadilla and it is filled with tuna and onion (Empanadilla de atún y cebolla ). It kind of resembles the empanadas that you find in Latin America. How much was it? 1.10 Euros.
We're going to be trying the tortilla and we ordered the one with chorizo and it is served with a slice of bread and they also gave us some allioli sauce.
So this should be pretty good & scrumptious. Our forth snack. We're still going strong guys. Not close to being full yet.
Time to try that. You already had a bite of the chorizo for our Spanish version so I'm insisting that you save that piece for me. I know it is good. It is wonderful with this garlic sauce.
We are trying something completely new. Apparently it is a dessert that is from Spain. We got three different kinds and I've just opened the first one up. This one is called polvorones de canela. It is cinnamon.
This one is called Mantecada. This is polvorone.
These were three Euros for the 3 of them.
Moving on to dessert. This is called Palmera. It is 1 Euro.
Gotta wash it down with a little fruit juice. This was 1.50 Euros.
That was a very fun visit to the Central Market (Mercado Central).
If you want to visit the Central Market (Mercat Central) here in Valencia a few things you should know. It is open from 8 to 3 pm everyday except for Sunday. So Monday through Saturday and there is a lot of produce and meat shops great for picking up groceries.
This is part of our Travel in Spain video series showcasing Spanish food, Spanish culture and Spanish cuisine.

⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Do Spaniards drink sangria? Are churros for dessert? Where can I get a good paella (only in Valencia?)? Great questions! When tourists hit Spain, they want to eat! And damn right, too! BUT there is so much misunderstanding about how, when and what we REALLY eat in this country. Which is why I made this video in Madrid – to help prevent Spain-bound travellers from falling into typical tourist gastro-mistakes. Watch, learn and drool!

Valencia, Spain - Cost of Living
Valencia is Spain’s third-largest city; it has all the benefits of a major metropolitan area such as bus, train, and air connections. It also has great healthcare facilities and plenty of recreation opportunities. This city is full of culture, with science and art museums, theaters and concert halls.
Getting around by public transportation is easy. During my time in Valencia, I was living in Bario del Carmen, and I walked to most everything. With the benefit of big-city amenities, Valencia’s cost of living and real estate is much less than that of Madrid or Barcelona… and offers conveniences of a modern city along with a true taste of living in old style Europe.
Lunch, including a beer or glass of wine, will run to about $12. Rent for a two-bedroom apartment in one of Valencia’s best neighborhoods starts at about $550 a month. If you would rather buy a place, the price for a small apartment in a trendy neighborhood starts around $100,000.
Here are some average costs:
A meal at an inexpensive restaurant in the City Center, including drink $12
Domestic Beer, 0.5-liter draught at a restaurant $2.30
Cappuccino (medium) $1.80
Apartment Rent, 1 bedroom in the City Centre $680.
And most food and produce at the grocery store was higher quality and cost less than what I would expect in the U.S.
Valencia lies on Spain’s southeastern coast and has many of the things that attract tourists to Spain, all in one place: The city has a vibrant café culture, with a maze of little streets and impressive architecture and medieval buildings.
It’s also right on the Mediterranean, so you can enjoy the broad sandy beaches and grab some seafood fresh from the sea. There are also ultra-modern visitor attractions at the City of the Arts and Sciences, and it all goes to make Valencia one of Spain’s best destinations for living or retiring.
Nomads, living here month-to-month, staying in the city center, using a co-work space and eating out every meal can expect to spend about $2,300 per month.
An expat with a year lease can get by for under $1,400 per month.
If you’re good at living cheap and sharing a flat with friends, you can get by for under $900 per month.
My budget for living one month in the city center, staying at inexpensive hotels and eating out at least once a day was about $1,400.

10 Things to do in Valencia, Spain Travel Guide Video Transcript: (València)
Continuing our travels through Spain, our next stop was Valencia.
Located along the coast, Spain’s third-largest city is renowned for its mild climate, futuristic constructions and paella.
We’ll spent most of our time in Valencia was mostly spent eating, but when we weren’t restaurant hopping or snacking our way through markets, we were exploring the city on foot and the destination quickly rose to the top.
In this Valencia travel guide we’re going to take you guys on a tour of the city and show you some of the things you can do on your visit.
After lunch we were ready to go sightseeing around Valencia. Our first stop: the Silk Exchange.
We went on a walk around the Old Quarter without much of a plan in mind. We saw some street art browsed through a few shops, and randomly stumbled across the narrowest building in Europe - that’s the terracotta.
Since the tower was closed, we decided to stop by Horchateria Santa Catalina to try a drink that you either love or hate: horchata.
This cold milky-looking drink is made with chufas, better known as tiger nuts in English.
Our next attraction was Valencia Cathedral, which is home to a Holy Chalice that has been defended as the true Holy Grail.
If there’s one dish that we had to try in Valencia, it was paella. Many non-Spaniards view paella as Spain's national dish, but Spaniards will tell you this is a regional Valencian dish.
The City of Arts and Sciences, is a cultural and architectural complex that looks quite spacey and futuristic.
The complex itself is made up of various structures including a domed-glass garden that’s filled with palm trees, the planetarium, an interactive science museum, an aquarium, an opera house, and a plaza designed to hold concerts and sporting events and Turia Park.
But paella wasn’t all we had at the restaurant. We also ordered fideuá.
We had a food adventure in Valencia’s Central Market. Although this is primarily a place to buy your fresh fish, vegetables, meat, and fruit, you can also find some stands that sell smaller snacks and traditional Spanish dishes.
To wrap up our trip to Valencia, we’ll leave you with a few nighttime shots of the city washed aglow. We hope you enjoyed this Valencia travel guide and that it gave you a few ideas of things to do around the city.

SOT, Jose Emilo Bofi, Xeraco orange farmer (Spanish): I read the newspaper this morning and I did not like the conflict between the European Union and Russia. I think it is a conflict between a few people. However, it can affect a lot of people within the EU and Russia. It's going to affect us all. For us, it will take two or three months to collect our remaining orange crop, and we don't know what will happen if no one buys it.

SOT, Jose Emilio Bofi, Xeraco orange farmer (Spanish): Let's see if there is a large enough market to absorb production, but if there isn't a sufficient market, prices will go down and we don't know if we can cover the costs of production because it is so expensive.

Speaking from his Xeraco farm in Spain, orange farmer Jose Emilio Bofi discussed the effects of the Russian sanctions on fruits and vegetables from the EU on his business, fearing severe losses during next year's orange harvest.
The farmer felt perturbed that the decisions of a few could cause the loss of business in his area, the collapse of orange prices and an inability to cover production costs.
Russia is known to be the EU's largest fruit and vegetable importer, with exports to Russia totalling more than €2 billion ($2.67 billion) per year. Announcing the sanctions on Wednesday, the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev said the ban will last a year, starting August 7.

The Fallas, a Traditional Celebration in Valencia, Spain
The Fallas is a traditional celebration held in commemoration of Saint Joseph in the city of Valencia, in Spain. The term Fallas refers to both the celebration and the monuments created during the celebration. A number of towns in the Valencian Community have similar celebrations inspired by the original one in Valencia.
Each neighbourhood of the city has an organized group of people, the Casal faller, that works all year long. They produces a construction known as a falla which is eventually burnt. They are mostly of a satirical nature and can be as tall as a few stories. Fallas are constructed of smaller figures called ninots, Valencian for dolls. The fallas take a whole year of planning and construction to complete. Each falla has an adult falla and a kid's falla.
The origins of the Fallas Festivity go back to an old tradition of the city's carpenters, who before the Festivity of their patron Saint Joseph, burned in front of their workshops their useless things and other wooden utensils they used to hold the candles that gave them light during the winter season. This is the reason why the night of the cremà (in which the Fallas monuments burn down) is always on March 19, the Festivity of San José. Today, more than seven hundred big and small Fallas are burned in the city of Valencia.
The five days and nights of Falles are a continuous party. There are a multitude of processions: historical, religious, and comedic. Crowds in the restaurants spill out into the streets. Explosions can be heard all day long and sporadically through the night.

I've really been enjoying my time in Madrid over the last week -- it's my first time here!! While there are many things I admire about Spanish culture, nothing stands out more than the SIESTA CULTURE (or short power naps after lunch).
Have you ever heard of a siesta before?
All of the stereotypes are true (especially in the summer months) -- people really do take siestas here and it's magnificent! Why can't we have a siesta culture in the U.S. as well? It makes a lot of sense!

If you are interested in teaching in Spain join our group on Facebook!
This video explains how much money you need to live in Spain, specifically in Madrid and in other regions. **Moving to Spain Guide:
This video is for teaching but it will give you an idea for how far a small salary will go in Spain. This video is related to the North American Language and Cultural Ambassadors Program (Auxiliares de Conversacion/Language Assistants) to teach English in Public Schools in Spain. There are several other programs to teach English in Spain and they earn more or less the same amount of money per month. BEDA, CIEE, and the Fulbright Program all run similar assistant language teacher programs.
In Spain, people are paid by the month, not bi-weekly or weekly at least within education. Additionally, while teaching English doesn’t make you rich in Spain for the most part, you can live a simple but enjoyable life.

Jesus-Christ Mas 2016 Valencia Spain
On December 24th 2016 we took the opportunity to bring God’s glory in the street of Valencia in Spain.
We’ve distributed some food and prayed for the homeless as true disciples of Jesus-Christ should do for Christmas time in order to share the Gospel and bring God’s love to them.
The Bible says in the Book of Acts In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” Acts 20:35.
This special day is a great opportunity to ALL brothers and sisters to share the true meaning of Christmas, that God came in flesh to redeem us from our sins. Jesus-Christ's sacrifice of the Cross was part of God's perfect plan to save humanity whosoever believes in His Son Jesus-Christ.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
It has been also a true blessing to teach to our children the way to help others.
The Bible says: «Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it. » Pro 22:6
God bless you all!

On a whim, my friend Sarah and I booked an early flight to Valencia, Spain and a return flight for only 12 hours later. That gave us only half a day in the city of Valencia, Spain, and let me tell you, we made the most of it (and we never felt more fabulous than when we were telling people that we jetted off to Valencia for only a day).

TAPAS HEAVEN in Seville, Spain + SPANISH HAM NINJA!!
Welcome to a brand new episode of Chopstick Travel. Today’s video is PART 1 of a two part series in a very special foodie destination. A place known for flamenco dancing, matadors, and incredible tapas dishes. Welcome to SEVILLE! Spanish food & culture is world-renown, and in the tiny city of Sevilla, the sense of Spanish tradition is strong! Join us for a day of eating and sightseeing in this beautiful city.
We start our morning with tostada, toasted buns spread with tomato puree and oil, and to wake up, a fresh cup of coffee with milk. Dessert after breakfast is a must, and we take you to a famous (and old) shop for churros con chocolate! We check out the oldest Gothic Cathedral in the world - Cathedral de Sevilla, to marvel at Sevilla’s gorgeous architecture. Next we head over to a fresh market called Mercado de Triana to sample some of the BEST jamón in the world, and enjoy a glass of sangria. YUM! We head to the Plaza de España and have the chance to watch some amazing street artists perform flamenco dancing, with live music! Street Food in Seville, Spain 2019
A DAY IN THE LIFE IN VALENCIA, SPAIN (+ great tourist spots!)
Rich, deep history. Stunning modernity. And a wealth of food and nightlife.
That's just some of what I find when a work contract brings me to Valencia -- where I try to balance living like a local, and experiencing what this sunny Spanish city has to offer.
Come with me through, more or less, my typical day in Valencia -- from sun up to lights out -- at a few of my favourite spots!
Thanks to MTE, Academia Solidaria and Tour Me Out.
All shot on the iPhone 6.
