Hiking California's Mt. Baldy in the Snow
Mt. Baldy is the tallest mountain in the Los Angeles area reaching 10,064 feet. Join Alice as she hikes to the peak of this mountain after a fresh snowfall. One of the most popular hikes in SoCal for those training for bigger hikes, Mt. Baldy AKA Mount San Antonio is a challenging 10 mile RT hike with more than 3,000 feet of elevation gain. In the winter months it is important to be properly equipped with crampons, hiking poles and ice picks for those hiking the Baldy Bowl.
Did you know there is also a ski area, lodge and chairlift that hikers, and skiers can enjoy year round. ✈
Have you climbed Mt. Baldy or any of the mountains in Southern California. Let me know in the comments.

Winter scenic drive at Mt Baldy
30 minutes from home is Mount Baldy. There was a storm last night while I was working the night shift. I decided to check it out when i got off this morning. It's a winter wonderland. Incredible winter alpine scenery at CA State Highway 39 behind Mt Baldy
California Highway 39 is one intimidating beast. It's a mountain pass with incredible winter scenery. You have no option but to enjoy it's incredible alpine scenery. Highway 39 is located behind Mt Baldy. This drive takes your out of LA and into the Alps. Highway 39 is a meandering road with a pristine surface, views for miles, and a natural lake at the top. There are few places on this globe where you can wake up at, or near, sea level and then drive up an alpine road that takes you up well above 6000 feet. Los Angeles has three such roads: Cloudburst Summit on Angeles Crest Highway, Crystal Lake on Highway 39, and the top of Mt. Baldy Road. Highway 39 separates itself from the others because of the pristine road surface, limited vehicle traffic, and a meandering route that mirrors roads in the Italian Alps.

Winter hike to Mt Baldy Tuesday January 7
Mt San Antonio, or Mt Baldy as its called colloquially referred to by Los Angeles locals, is a forty-five minutes drive east of the city of angels. This is the closest ski area to Los Angeles in the winter months and when southern California does see snow the mountain has twenty-six runs in operation. But did you know that there is more to do at Mt Baldy then just skiing? Hiking to the top of San Antonio is one of the ultimate hikes in the Los Angeles area. The summit gives you a birds-eye view of everything from downtown Los Angeles, to the Cajon Pass to the north, to sometimes even boats out on the Pacific Ocean almost sixty miles to the west. Sometimes on a clear day, you can even see the shadow of Catalina Island in the distance. These kinds of views are why I prefer to hike Mt Baldy in the winter months. The smog is much lighter and the skies above Los Angeles are clearer in February and March and the views at over 10,000 feet are just fantastic. Not to mention hiking Mt Baldy in the snow is unbelievably pretty.
Summer hiking is a blast—sunshine on your face, a warm breeze blowing through the trail—but wintertime creates its own magic within the mountains, especially when there’s snow on the ground. Snow dramatically changes your favorite trails and adds novelty to places you’ve been before. It’s a totally different experience in terms of the senses, from what you smell – pine becomes more intense in the winter – to what you see. Instead of wildflowers and green meadows, snow covers everything, even the trail. Winter hike offers you solitude and quiet contemplation.

Devils Backbone to Mt Baldy Summit, hiking route and description in 4K, Mount San Antonio
Join me on a hiking loop to Mt Baldy via the narrow Devils Backbone in 4K, return via the Ski Hut trail. The loop is about 10 miles long and has an elevation gain of 4000ft. The hike starts at Manker Flat and goes up to Baldy Notch, before continuing on to Devils Backbone. From there I go to the summit and then down the Ski hut trail, which is steeper but shorter, and then looping back to Manker Flat.

First Snow Fall on Mt. Baldy in the Winter of 2019

Scariest section of Devil's Backbone Trailhead on my way to Mt Baldy summit.
Devil’s Backbone Trail offers spectacular views from an impressive ridge-top trail. The spine-tingling hike along a tantalizing spine starts from Baldy Notch and ends at Mount Baldy, the highest summit in the San Gabriel Mountain. Devil’s Backbone Trail is 3.3-miles long with 2,350 feet of elevation gain.
Devil's Backbone Trail follows the rocky ridgeline extending west from Baldy Notch to the summit. The views from the ridge are all encompassing with another sweeping vista around every turn. The trail is sometimes narrow with steep drop offs to one side or the other and alternates between lush undergrowth amid pines to suddenly barren outcroppings of rock.
