Japan Vlog #003 - Day 3 in Kyoto (Hiking day from Kibune to Kurama)
Wake up super early to take the first train to Kibune. The train will takes you through the forest of maple trees, so if you come at autumn season, you are able to enjoy the beauty of maple trees.
After we reach Kibune-guchi station, we plan to take bus to Kifune Shrine. But its too bad that bus start operating at 9:10am, & we reach there about 7:30am. Walk from Kibune-guchi station to Kifune Shrine. Explore the beauty of the mountain & river side walk. This is definitely the best experience of my whole Japan trip.

** Kibune : If you come at summer season, don't forget to try Nagashi Somen (serving of thin white noodles via flowing cold water, slide down from bamboo pipe) at Hirobun restaurant.

We (mostly) hike up Mt Kurama to amazingly peaceful, Kurama Dera. Cheating slightly, by taking the shortest funicular rail ever, up the side of the mountain, we had the most chilled experience ever up in the hills of Kyoto.

Places to Go: Mt Kurama
Located in the northern part of Kyoto, Mt. Kurama is known for its spirituality and its breathtaking natural beauty. The temple Kurama-dera has a history from the year 770, and each season shows visitors a different face. Whether you take the cable car or hike up the mountain, you’re surrounded by verdant mountain forests where you may be able to spot some of the local wildlife. The temple’s main hall offers a gorgeous view out over the surrounding mountains, and a sandō path connects it to the nearby Kibune Village and Kifune Shrine. Mt. Kurama is also believed to be the birthplace of reiki, a type of “energy therapy” which utilizes spiritual elements. Tengu, long-nosed or beaked creatures believed to be the guardians of the mountain, can be found as statues, art, and goods in the mountain village and in the temple complex.

Hiking from Kibune to Kurama【 Kyoto, Japan 】
Instead of taking the usual route from Kurama to Kibune, we decided to go the other way around following the suggestion of Jason C on tripadvisor.com :
We reached Kibuneguchi around 8:40am. We were initially planning to walk up to Kibune Shrine but decided to take the bus instead. It turned out to be a good decision because as suggested - save energy for the hike.
The paper fortune at Kifune Shrine is in Japanese but you can connect to the Shrine’s wifi and scan the QR code of the paper fortune to get the translation.
If you're not keen in exploring the entire Kifune Shrine, you can start the hike to Mt. Kurama after visiting the main shrine/getting your fortune telling.
Too bad, we missed the restaurant platforms by the river. But nevertheless, the restaurant serve quite delicious meals. We had our meal at Torijaya before starting the hike to Mt. Kurama.

We travel from Kyoto to the town of Kibune for nagashi somen on one of their platforms over the river. From there we visit the Kibune shrine and hike over the mountain to the town of Kurama. In Kurama we visit more temples and make an onsen stop.

2nd day of my Japan trip! (March, 21). Explored the streets of Kyoto and visited Mt Kurama. The small village lies at the foot of Mt Kurama, there's a temple called Kurama-dera (a Buddhist temple founded in the 8th century), and of course, an open-air Onsen.
