The Taj Mahal (/ˌtɑːdʒ məˈhɑːl/, more often /ˈtɑːʒ/;[3] (Persian and Urdu: تاج محل meaning Crown of Palaces)[4] is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the Indian city of Agra. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan (reigned 1628–1658), to house the tomb of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The tomb is the centrepiece of a 17-hectare (42-acre)[5] complex, which includes a mosque and a guest house, and is set in formal gardens bounded on three sides by a crenellated wall.
Construction of the mausoleum was essentially completed in 1643 but work continued on other phases of the project for another 10 years. The Taj Mahal complex is believed to have been completed in its entirety in 1653 at a cost estimated at the time to be around 32 million rupees, which in 2015 would be approximately 52.8 billion rupees (US$827 million). The construction project employed some 20,000 artisans under the guidance of a board of architects led by the court architect to the emperor, Ustad Ahmad Lahauri.
The Taj Mahal was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for being the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage. Described by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore as the tear-drop on the cheek of time, it is regarded by many as the best example of Mughal architecture and a symbol of India's rich history. The Taj Mahal attracts 7–8 million visitors a year. In 2007, it was declared a winner of the New7Wonders of the World (2000–2007) initiative.

Pollution 'killing' India’s iconic Taj Mahal
India's most famous monument, the white marble Taj Mahal, is dying, according to historians and local guides who are calling for the government to protect and carry out preservation work on the palace. Grace Lee reports.
The world's most iconic mausoleum is dying.
That's according to historians and local guides at the Taj Mahal, who are calling for the government to protect The Jewel of India.
They're blaming one main culprit: Pollution.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) PRESIDENT OF AGRA GUIDE'S ASSOCIATION, SHAMSUDDIN KHAN, SAYING:
The river is dry. Lot of vehicles are around here, lot of construction going on the other side. That's why Taj is dying.
Pollution in Agra, where the monument stands, has jumped sharply over the past 30 years.
The city sits on an industrial belt and is ranked eighth in the world for air pollution.
Local guides say that's damaging the beauty of the Taj, and turning the white marble of the wall into a murky yellow.
While the monument's beauty is a big concern, the effect is creating another problem.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) PRESIDENT OF AGRA GUIDE'S ASSOCIATION, SHAMSUDDIN KHAN, SAYING:
Because Taj is dying, the tourism is getting less day by day. So, we are requesting to the government, other people that they should do something to protect the Taj.
According to experts, one of the main causes of pollution is that the Yamuna river is drying up.
Mixing sewage in the water has led to large numbers of insects, and the waste they produce is staining the Taj Mahal walls.
Fumes from clogged city roads aren't helping either.
But there are still many who are fighting to save the building.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST AND LAWYER, M.C. MEHTA, WHO HAS BEEN FIGHTING TO SAVE TAJ MAHAL FROM POLLUTION FOR OVER THREE DECADES, SAYING:
This is a world monument - it is not confined within the boundaries - though it is in India, and we are proud of it.
M.C. Mehta is an environmental lawyer who has been fighting to protect the Taj for over three decades.
He's recently won support from India's top court, which has instructed the government to take urgent steps to restore the monument.
That's what visitors are hoping for too.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) AMERICAN TOURIST FROM SEATTLE, SEBRA, SAYING:
Well, of course I hope they do. Of course I hope they take care of it. Yeah, it's beautiful and it should be preserved.

A brilliantly unique and interesting concept The 'Begum' Collection is inspired by the three most influential princesses of the Mughal Era. Begum Noor Jahan, who was considered by many as the first jewelry designer of India and invented the art of meenakari or enameling over metal had collected one of the most spectacular jewelry collections' in her time. Begum Mumtaz Mahal who was the daughter in-law of Noor Jahan and the most beloved wife of Emperor Shah Jahan, who bestowed upon her some of the rarest gems and jewels, one of them was the crown she wore at the Royal Court. And Begum Jahanara, who inherited most of her mother's jewelry and promoted the art of kundan and meenakari in India.
The 'Begum' collection is a tribute to these amazing women of the Mughal Empire who were collectors of some of the most desired jewelry pieces in all time.
Taj Mahal: The Great Indian Jewel [IGEO TV]
The Taj Mahal is a complex building built between 1631 and 1654 in the city of Agra, Uttar Pradesh, in India, on the banks of the Yamuna river, by Muslim Emperor Shah Jahan of Mughal dynasty.
The impressive architectural ensemble was erected in honor of his favorite wife, Arjumand Bano Begum, better known as Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth to their fourteenth child. It is estimated that its construction required the effort of about 20,000 workers.
The Taj Mahal is considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements of Islamic, Persian, Indian and even Turkish architecture. The monument has achieved special notoriety for the romantic character of its inspiration. Although the mausoleum covered with white marble dome is the most famous, Taj Mahal is an integrated architectural ensemble.
Now it's a major tourist destination of India. In 1983, he was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Taj Mahal was named one of The New Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

#TajMahal, the magnificent monument that stands at the heart of #India has a story that has been melting the hearts of millions of listeners since the time Taj has been visible. A story, that although ended back in 1631, continues to live on in the form of Taj and is considered a living example of eternal love.
It's the love story of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, two people from the course of history who set an example for the people living in present and the future to come. An English poet, Sir Edwin Arnold best describes it as
Not a piece of architecture, as other buildings are, but the proud passion of an emperor's love wrought in living stones. The story that follows next will prove why the statement is true.

#ShahJahan, initially named #PrinceKhurram, was born in the year 1592. He was the son of Jehangir, the fourth Mughal emperor of India and the grandson of#AkbarTheGreat. In 1607 when strolling down the Meena Bazaar, accompanied by a string of fawning courtiers, Shah Jahan caught a glimpse of a girl hawking silk and glass beads.
It was love at first sight and the girl was #MumtazMahal, who was known as Arjumand Banu Begum at that time. At that time, he was 14 years old and she, a #MuslimPersianPrincess, was 15. After meeting her, Shah Jahan went back to his father and declared that he wanted to marry her. The match got solemnized after five years i.e., in the year 1612.
It was in the year 1628 that #ShahJahan became the Emperor and entrusted Arjumand Banu with the royal seal. He also bestowed her with the title of Mumtaz Mahal, meaning the Jewel of the Palace.
Though #ShahJahan had other wives also, but, #MumtazMahal was his favorite and accompanied him everywhere, even on military campaigns.
In the year 1631, when Mumtaz Mahal was giving birth to their 14th child, she died due to some complications. While Mumtaz was on her deathbed, #ShahJahan promised her that he would never remarry and will build the richest #mausoleum over her grave.

History of Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal (more often from Persian and Arabic, crown of palaces, pronounced ) is a white marble mausoleum located on the southern bank of Yamuna River in the Indian city of Agra. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (reigned 1628–1658) to house the tomb of his favorite wife of three, Mumtaz Mahal.
Construction of the mausoleum was essentially completed in 1643 but work continued on other phases of the project for an additional ten years. The Taj Mahal complex is believed to have been completed in its entirety in 1653 at a cost estimated at the time to be around 32 million Indian rupees ($ 501,000 US) which in 2015 would be valued at around 52.8 billion Indian rupees ($827 million US). The construction project employed around 20,000 artisans under the guidance of a board of architects led by Ustad Ahmad Lahauri. The domed marble tomb is part of an integrated complex consisting of gardens and two red-sandstone buildings surrounded by a crenellated wall on three sides.
The Taj Mahal is regarded by many as the best example of Mughal architecture and is widely recognized as the jewel of Muslim art in India. It is one of the world’s most celebrated structures and a symbol of India’s rich history. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, the Taj Mahal attracts some 3 million visitors a year.

THE TEMPLE OF LOVE DELHI & AGRA INDIA PEARL MOSQUE & TAJ MAJAL 59514
The Temple of Love, the seventh film in the 1930s’ travel film series Traveltalks, produced by James A. Fitzpatrick, takes viewers on a tour of India and features visits to Delhi, Agra, and the Deserted City. The film begins on the road outside of the Deserted City, Fatehpur Sikri (00:56), showing the ancient abandoned city. The impressive city (01:50) features a beautiful courtyard in the Great Mosque, and a surprising community of orphaned children (02:30). The tour of India continues with a visit to the Tower of Victory (03:22) on route to Delhi, which commemorates the victory of Muhammad over the Hindus. At Delhi (03:44), the viewer is treated to scenes of bustling streets and the sacred cows (04:10) that wander the city as if it is theirs. Other sights include a funeral procession (05:07) and a visit to Cathedral Mosque (05:25; 05:42; 05:57), built by Shah Jahan in the mid-seventeenth century. On the road from Delhi to Agra, the travelers encounter a “Punch and Judy” troupe (06:19), before arriving at the fortified walls of Agra (06:50). Snake charmers (07:18) sit outside of the city’s gates, where they cheer on a fight between a cobra and a mongoose (07:44). Inside the city is the beautiful Pearl Mosque (08:28), which—according to tradition—used to house a great pearl suspended from the ceiling. The final stop is at Taj Mahal (09:05), the so-called “Temple of Love,” the mausoleum of Mumtaz Mahal, built by Shah Jahan as a memorial to his wife.
Fatehpur Sikri is a town in the Agra District of Uttar Pradesh, India. The city was founded in the year 1569 by the Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great, and served as the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1571 to 1585, when it was abandoned. After his military victories over Chittor and Ranthambore, Akbar decided to shift his capital from Agra to a new location 23 miles (37 km) south-west, to honour the Sufi saint and Salim Chishti. Here, he commenced the construction of a planned walled city, which took the next fifteen years in planning and construction, with a series of royal palaces, harem, courts, a mosque, private quarters and other utility buildings. He named the city Fatehabad, with Fateh, a word of Arabic origin in Persian, meaning victorious. It was later called Fatehpur Sikri. It is at Fatehpur Sikri that the legends of Akbar and his famed courtiers, the nine jewels or Navaratnas, were born. Fatehpur Sikri is one of the best preserved examples of Mughal architecture in India.

Taj Mahal - The Jewel of India
The Taj Mahal is the epitome of Mughal art and one of the most famous buildings in the world. Yet there have been few serious studies of it and no full analysis of its architecture and meaning. Described by Rabindranath Tagore as a tear on the face of eternity, it is in popular imagination a veritable wonder of the world.
The white-splendored tomb was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his favourite wife, Arjumand Banu Begum, better known as Mumtaz Mahal (Chosen of the Palace). She married Shah Jahan in 1612 to become his second wife and inseparable companion, and died in childbirth at Burhanpur while on a campaign with her husband in 1629.

Indian Taj Mahal. 2018
The Taj Mahal means Crown of the Palace is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the Indian city of Agra. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan (reigned from 1628 to 1658), to house the tomb of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The tomb is the centerpiece of a 17-hectare (42-acre) complex, which includes a mosque and a guest house, and is set in formal gardens bounded on three sides by a crenelated wall.
The Taj Mahal was commissioned by Shah Jahan in 1631, to be built in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, a Persian princess who died giving birth to their 14th child, Gauhara Begum. Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632. The imperial court documenting Shah Jahan's grief after the death of Mumtaz Mahal illustrate the love story held as the inspiration for the Taj Mahal. The principal mausoleum was completed in 1643 and the surrounding buildings and garden were finished about five years later.
The Taj Mahal was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for being the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage. It is regarded by many as the best example of Mughal architecture and a symbol of India's rich history.
The Taj Mahal incorporates and expands on design traditions of Persian and earlier Mughal architecture. Specific inspiration came from successful Timurid and Mughal buildings including the Gur-e Amir (the tomb of Timur, the progenitor of the Mughal dynasty, in Samarkand), Humayun's Tomb, Itmad-Ud-Daulah's Tomb (sometimes called the Baby Taj), and Shah Jahan's own Jama Masjid in Delhi. While earlier Mughal buildings were primarily constructed of red sandstone, Shah Jahan promoted the use of white marble inlaid with semi-precious stones. Buildings under his patronage reached new levels of refinement

Taj Mahal, one ofSeven Wonders of the World is just not known for its pristine beauty but much of its grace lies in the fact that it is a monument dedicated to love. Taj Mahal was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal and hence the monument still stands as a pilgrimage for lovers.
Shah Jahan was the son of Mughal emperor Jahangir and grandson of Akbar the Great. At the age of 14, Shah Jahan (then known as Khurram) met Mumtaz Mahal (then known as Arjumand Banu Begum) and fell in love with her. Arjumand Banu Begum was a princess of Persian nobility. Both were married in 1612 and enthralled by the brilliance and beauty of the queen, Shah Jahan bestowed the highest honour of the land and renamed her as Mumtaz Mahal, meaning the Jewel of the Palace, in Persian language. Mumtaz Mahal accompanied Emperor Shah Jahan in every venture, be it wars or hunting campaigns and both were overwhelmingly in love with each other.
Unfortunately Mumtaz Mahal died in 1631 giving birth to their 14th child and the shock depressed the emperor to great extent. The depth of love did not diminish after the demise of the empress and Shah Jahan planned to build an unimaginably precious and exquisite memorial for Mumtaz Mahal. Hence started the construction of Taj Mahal; it took 22 long years, use of 22000 labourers and 1000 elephants to complete the construction of this white beauty.
