Opening Reception | Defining Place/Space: Contemporary Photography from Australia
Opening Reception from Defining Place/Space: Defining Contemporary Photography from Australia
March 16, 2019
Defining Place/Space: Contemporary Photography from Australia represents the current state of contemporary photography in Australia through the work of thirteen artists including several whose work is being shown in the United States for the first time. The featured photographers were nominated by five Australian senior curators of photography; finalists were selected by MOPA’s Executive Director and Chief Curator, Deborah Klochko.
The exhibition shows that art-making in Australia is not just about the flora and fauna of the country. The artists reflect many different perspectives on the creativity that exists in the country. The nomination of four Aboriginal artists touches upon the country’s relationship with indigenous people, and the ways that history affects art-making. Defining Place/Space is more than what people will expect. It shows a country at the forefront of photographic image-making, opening a dialogue with the rest of our world about the place Australia holds in the creation of art.
Artists featured in the exhibition include: Hoda Afshar, Polly Borland, Pat Brassington, Michael Cook, Rosemary Laing, Ricky Maynard, Tracey Moffatt, Polixeni Papapetrou, Trent Parke, Patrick Pound, Jacky Redgate, James Tylor, and Justine Varga.
A fully illustrated catalog will accompany the exhibition, and be available for purchase from MOPA’s store and website.

Opening Reception | Boundless and Animals Among Us: 11th Annual Youth Exhibition
The Members’ Opening Reception for Boundless: A California Invitational and 11th Annual Youth Exhibition held on October 14, 2016.
Boundless: A California Invitational - 15 Oct, 2016 - 29 Jan, 2017
MOPA presents Boundless: A California Invitational, the third triennial exhibition of contemporary California photographers. The triennial invitational began in 2010 as State of Mind and was followed in 2013 by Staking Claim. These exhibitions showcase the talent and diverse scope of artwork by photographers living within the museum’s home state.
The exhibition features 11 California artists with work created in the past five years. The artists are both established and emerging, and the variety of work is as varied as the state of California itself. Boundless embraces the spirit of the infinite, of having no restrains. The work explores and confronts the subjects and traditions of the past, re-imagining the medium in our time. The result is a dynamic exhibition that highlights the constant evolution of the art form.

1th Annual Youth Exhibition - 8 Oct, 2016 - 7 Feb, 2017
Inspired by the San Diego Zoo's 100th anniversary, MOPA's 11th Annual Youth Exhibition will focus on the theme of animals.
We encouraged K-12 students in San Diego County and Tijuana to creatively explore the topic of animals and submit photographic or video art for a chance to be part of the exhibition. We had a record 473 exceptional submissions with 105 selected to be in the exhibition.

Timken Museum of Art: The Russian Collection, San Diego, California
The museum displays European old master paintings, sculptures, and tapestries. The museum's also features an extensive collection of Russian icons spanning the period from the 15th to the 20th century. This collection is featured in this video.
The groundwork for the museum was laid in 1951 when Walter Ames helped sisters Amy and Anne Putnam to form the nonprofit Putnam Foundation to own and manage their art collection. The sisters had settled in San Diego in the early 20th century and made donations to the San Diego Museum of Art in its early years. At first the Foundation loaned items from its collection to noteworthy museums across the United States. When the Timken Museum opened in 1965, the Putnam Foundation Collection provided its initial material and Walter Ames became its first director.
Preserving The Gaslamp Museum
Approved Home Pros learns the history of the Gaslamp Museum at the Davis-Horton House and the problems they were facing. The windows in the museum were causing sun damage and destroying their artifacts. NU-VUE Window Films decided to give back to the city of San Diego and donated window films to preserve the history that the Gaslamp Museum displays. Learn more:

Question Bridge: Black Male is an experimental non-fiction new media project designed to explore critically divisive issues within the African American male community. The project interweaves a series of questions wherein the subjects serve as both interviewers and interviewees-- posing and answering each others' questions-- mediated only through the lens of video.
By facilitating a conversation between black men across the geographic, economic, generational, educational and social strata of American society, Question Bridge provides space for Black Men to dispel preconceptions and bring the full spectrum of their identity and beliefs to the forefront. The media installation and documentary film provide insight into 200 exchanges between 100 black men from a broad geographic area; and the interactive website expands this dialogue into a megalogue among a critical mass of Black men in America.
Question Bridge: Black Males is supported in part by a grant from the Open Society Institute, The Tribeca Film Institute, the LEF Foundation, The Center for Cultural Innovation, and The California College of the Arts.
The Oakland Museum has an installation of the Question Bridge January 21, 2012 - July 8, 2012.
