Turnip Vegan in Hong Kong 2017 Part 2: Macau!!
Macau also spelled Macao and officially the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China is an autonomous region on the western side of the Pearl River estuary in East Asia. Macau is bordered by the city of Zhuhai in Mainland China to the north and the Pearl River Delta to the east and south. Hong Kong lies about 64 kilometres (40 mi) to its east across the Delta.[5] With a population of 650,900[3] living in an area of 30.5 km2 (11.8 sq mi), it is the most densely populated region in the world. A former Portuguese colony, it was returned to Chinese sovereignty on 20 December 1999.
Macau was administered by the Portuguese Empire and its inheritor states from the mid-16th century until late 1999, when it constituted the last remaining European colony in Asia.[6][7] Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 1550s. In 1557, Macau was leased to Portugal from Ming China as a trading port. The Portuguese Empire administered the city under Chinese authority and sovereignty until 1887, when Macau became a colony through a mutual agreement between the two countries. Sovereignty over Macau was transferred back to China on 20 December 1999. The Joint Declaration on the Question of Macau and Macau Basic Law stipulate that Macau operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2049, fifty years after the transfer.[8]
Under the policy of one country, two systems, the State Council of the People's Republic of China is responsible for military defense and foreign affairs while Macau maintains its own legal system, public security force, monetary system, customs policy and immigration policy. Macau participates in international organizations and events that do not require members to possess national sovereignty.[8][9]
Macau is a resort city in Southern China, known for its casinos and luxury hotels. Its gaming revenue has been the world's largest since 2006,[10] with the economy heavily dependent on gaming and tourism. According to The World Factbook, Macau has the fourth highest life expectancy in the world.[11] Moreover, it has a very high Human Development Index, ranking 18th in the world as of 2014.[12] Macau is among the world's richest regions and as of 2015 its GDP per capita by purchasing power parity is higher than that of any country in the world, according to the World Bank.[13]
It is widely known as the pre-eminent gambling (or gaming) capital of the world, greatly dwarfing other gambling centers/cities.[14][15][16]
In Macau, China Sees a Model for a Rebellious Hong Kong

In Macau, China Sees a Model for a Rebellious Hong KongThe former Portuguese colony, now a global gambling hub, has been more willing than its neighbor to accept Beijing's authority.ImageMACAU - When Macau, the Portuguese colony turned Chinese gambling hub, got a new chief executive in October, the vote by an electoral committee was unanimous. He ran unopposed. No one took to the streets in protest. When young activists applied for permission to demonstrate in support of the protest movement in nearby Hong Kong, the authorities said no - four times. When a few dozen showed up anyway in Macau's historic center in August, the police arrested seven of them.Macau today, like Hong Kong, is a political experiment that began in the late 1990s, when China reclaimed both territories from Western colonial powers and promised that civil liberties could coexist with its brand of authoritarian rule. Now, as Hong Kong's political unrest continues, China's ruling Communist Party has become increasingly explicit about how much it will tolerate under that formula - and holds Macau up as a shining example of obedience. The most important thing is to implement and safeguard the central government's full control, Li Zhanshu, the third highest-ranking official in China, who presides over policy for both territories, said in a speech about Macau in Beijing this month. Compared to Hong Kong, Macau has more readily accepted Beijing's ultimate authority on matters of national policy under the one country, two systems formula applied to both of them. And for the most part, the city's 670,000 residents have gone along with it, either co-opted or coerced by the mainland. After 20 years in Macau, it is difficult to find the clear lines between the two systems, said Sou Ka Hou, one of 33 depu
'Sweet Language of Macao': The reinterpretation and revival
Words are tools that help us understand culture and tradition, and China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) has its very own spoken language – Maquista, or Macanese Patua.
Some may wonder what's so amazing about it?
CGTN Digital spoke to Miguel de Senna Fernandes, a high-profile Macanese community member, about the origins, status and cultural significance of Macao's unique local language.

Macau
Macau (/məˈkaʊ/; traditional Chinese: 澳門; simplified Chinese: 澳门; Jyutping: ou3mun4*2; pinyin: Àomén), also spelled Macao, is one of the two Special Administrative Regions of the People's Republic of China, the other being Hong Kong. Macau lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta across from Hong Kong to the east, which is about 64 kilometers, also bordered by Guangdong Province to the north and facing the South China Sea to the east and south. The territory's economy is heavily dependent on gambling and tourism, but also includes manufacturing. The Cantonese people from Hong Kong and Guangdong, especially recent mainland tourism from Mandarin-speaking regions, have boosted the economy of Macau significantly.
A former Portuguese colony, Macau was administered by Portugal from the mid-16th century until late 1999, when it was the last remaining European colony in Asia. Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 1550s. In 1557, Macau was rented to Portugal by the Chinese empire as a trading port. The Portuguese administered the city under Chinese authority and sovereignty until 1887, when Macau became a colony of the Portuguese empire. Sovereignty over Macau was transferred back to China on 20 December 1999. The Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of Macau stipulate that Macau operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2049, fifty years after the transfer. By 2002, it had become one of the world's richest cities. It became the world's biggest gambling centre in 2006.

STORYLINE:
Chinese President Jiang Zemin continued his visit to Moscow on Tuesday with a visit to Moscow State University and talks with Yegor Stroyev, speaker of the upper chamber of the Russian parliament.
Jiang told students at Moscow State University on Tuesday that the new, 20-year friendship treaty between Russia and China was aimed at protecting global security.
Jiang and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the treaty on Monday, formalising the burgeoning ties between the two nations following decades of Cold War rivalry.
The goal of signing the treaty was to deepen mutual confidence, Jiang said, speaking Russian. If we firmly and unfailingly implement this treaty, we will make Russian-Chinese relations an example of friendship.
Putin, who usually confines his formal meetings with foreign leaders in Moscow to the Kremlin, joined the Chinese president at the university for the speech.
He said the treaty was very important and praised Jiang for delivering the 40-minute speech in Russian, a language the Chinese leader learned as a student in Moscow.
Jiang said that each time he visited Russia he felt at home.
From the university, Jiang headed for the parliamentary building for a meeting with Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov before meeting Yegor Stroyev, speaker of the upper chamber of the Russian parliament.
Later on Tuesday, Jiang is expected to leave Moscow for Volgograd.
Putin and Jiang pledged in a joint statement on Monday that their countries would remain friends forever, and never become enemies.
The treaty emphasised that the two nations were not forming a military pact against other countries.
China bought billions of dollars worth of Russian fighter jets, submarines, missiles and destroyers during the 1990s, becoming the biggest customer for Russia's ailing military industrial complex.
In its military buildup, Beijing has concentrated on amassing tactical, not strategic, weapons.
Monday's treaty also confirmed Russia's support for the Chinese claim on Taiwan, opposing independence for what Beijing views as a renegade province.
The two territories split in the 1949 civil war.

UK 12 April 2011 - Do good. Avoid evil.
UK: LONDON: CHINESE PRESIDENT JIANG ZEMIN - 4 DAY VISIT
English/Nat
Chinese President Jiang Zemin arrives in Britain on Monday for what is widely anticipated to be highly controversial visit, with many protests planned during his four day stay.
The President is very sensitive to protests within earshot and said Switzerland had lost a friend when campaigners were allowed to make noisy demonstrations during his visit there in March this year.
The stage is set for Tuesday's traditional carriage ride down the Mall to Buckingham Palace with Britain's Queen.
The Chinese and British flags fly side by side for the first ever state visit by a Chinese President.
If the weather is good, President Jiang will ride down here in an open top horse drawn carriage - exposed on all sides to what is expected to be a large and noisy demonstration from Free Tibet campaigners.
It's a mighty headache for Britain's police force.
When questioned about it in a briefing last week, the Foreign Office refused to give any details about the security plans - but they will be hoping to avoid accusations levelled against Switzerland in March this year when President Zemin felt the force of noisy protests.
The President was so displeased he snubbed a welcoming ceremony and told the Swiss parliament they had lost a good friend.
Protestors for Tibet and Taiwan even managed to scale a building near the parliament to make their presence felt.
At the Free Tibet headquarters in the centre of London they are getting ready for the visit.
Activists such as Migmar Tsering, whose parents were exiled from Tibet forty years ago are preparing placards and posters which they are determined President Jiang will see.
Campaigners claim that ever since the Dalai Lama fled Lhasa in 1959, China has pursued a campaign of genocide and ethnic cleansing to obliterate Tibetan culture.
Alison Reynolds, who is leading the Free Tibet protest, says it is their responsibility to make their voices heard on behalf of those who would be jailed in China for doing so.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The Free Tibet campaign will be demonstrating throughout Jiang Zemin's visit. He's clearly very, very sensitive to public protest. It's not regarded as a legitimate activity - you can be arrested and tortured for expressing your opinion in China and Tibet so we feel it is our responsibility for those people who can't speak out to make sure that there is a very loud and vocal demonstration throughout Jiang Zemin's visit.
SUPER CAPTION: Alison Reynolds, Director, Free Tibet Campaign
The final leaflets are being bundled into envelopes urging as many people as possible to attend the protests.
Alison Reynolds and her counterpart at another Tibetan organisation visited the Prime Minister's residence at 10 Downing Street last week.
They did not meet Mr Blair, but were given time with a Foreign Office minister to outline their grievances.
After the meeting Shui Li (pron:: Shway Lee) made plain his intention to do all he can to disrupt President Jiang's visit.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
He's just never experienced such a sign of disagreement inside China. He's got used to everyone agreeing with him. Over here we're going to teach him a lesson - teach him what democracy is all about. It's all about disagreement and tolerance.
SUPER CAPTION: Shui Li, Federation for a Democratic China
The purpose of the visit will be to renew Chinese and British ties following the handover of Hong Kong two years ago.
Trade relations will be high on the agenda as China becomes increasingly open to foreign investment.
Not all are convinced that noisy protests are the best way to change things in China.
Dr Phil Deans at a leading London university, believes quiet diplomacy and patient negotiation are far more effective means.
