My mother and I decided to head to Charlevoix, MI.
We were told to visit a place called 'Castle Farms' because it was a neat place. We didn't look it up on google or even see what it was all about. We wrote down the address and looked it up on the GPS. We had no clue what this place was or what to expect. I didn't expect a castle to be there, that's for sure - I just figured it was a random term they used to brand themselves.
Turned out to be a really neat place. Beautiful architecture, landscaping, and also many antiques to browse through. Totally worth the visit!
We also briefly drove past the Mushroom Houses of Charlevoix. An architect by the name of Earl Young created a series of homes in the area. All of the locals told us that it was a 'must-see'. We never stopped or went inside or anything (which it something that you can do).
Lastly, we visited the Charlevoix South Pier Lighthouse. Awesome place to visit. The water around the lighthouse was stunningly clear. I have never seen anything so clear! Definitely worth the stop, if you are in the area. Also, there is a beach right there to play in during the summer months.

History of Aartvark Studio and Gallery, Charlevoix, MI
Terry Salmonson bought his first camera in 1967 when he and his wife Lynne were expecting their first child. After serving five years as a pilot in the Air Force Terry went to Wayne State University and received his Master of Fine Arts in photography. Soon after, the Salmonson family moved from Detroit to Northern Michigan to start a new life in small town America.
Terry first took a job as a real estate agent . The following year Terry and Lynne agreed that it was time to start their photography business. It was November 29th, 1974, the day after Thanksgiving when they officially opened the doors to Aartvark Studio in the downtown Market Mall in Charlevoix, MI.
It was with a true entrepreneurial spirit, some undeveloped talent, ingenuity, hard work and unyielding faith that they were able to make of go of it. Lynne was responsible for the framing, customer service and bookkeeping while Terry took the pictures, developed them in their kitchen sink and used his newly acquired real estate skills to sell them.
Terry’s photography quickly found both statewide and national notoriety when he received his second Masters of Photography degree from the Professional Photographers of America and won the coveted Kodak Gallery Award in 1991.
The Market Mall went under major renovations in 1993 and after a year of dust and hammering the Beacon Center is what emerged. A 3 story building housing 8 condominiums and 5 street level storefronts, two of which Terry and Lynne own. They tripled the square footage of the business and rented out one of the storefronts to another local business.
During the 90’s they entered the digital age trading in film cameras and chemical processing for digital ones. This was not an easy transition to make considering that the studio had invested in a complete photo lab with enlargers, printers and industrial sized developers that made it possible to do everything in-house.
It didn’t take long however, to realize that the photography industry was moving towards digital imaging and printing and Aartvark Studio was one of the first adopters of this new technology. DSLR’s, Macintosh computers, Adobe software and digital printers became the new photo lab.
For the past 40 years the Salmonson family has built their business on the philosophy of loving what you do, making the most of what you have and caring about the people you meet from day to day. So if you are ever in the Charlevoix area please visit Aartvark studio and gallery on Bridge Street in beautiful downtown Charlevoix, MI. across from the performance pavilion in the park.
Terry and Lynne Salmonson, originally from the Detroit area dreamt of the day they could live in Northern Michigan. It was 1973 when Terry received his Master’s degree in Photography from Wayne State University, they packed up their 1967 Camaro and headed north.

Charlevoix (/ˈʃɑːrləvɔɪ/ SHARL-ə-voy) is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,513 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Charlevoix County.
Charlevoix Township is a separate municipal entity that completely surrounds the city and has a year-round population of 1,697. Typical of Northern Michigan towns, Charlevoix has a much higher seasonal tourist population in the summer.
The city is situated between Lake Michigan and the western end of Lake Charlevoix, which drains into Lake Michigan through the short Round Lake/Pine River complex in the heart of downtown Charlevoix. The Charlevoix South Pier Light Station marks the opening of the channel onto Lake Michigan. Charlevoix's Round Lake has been called the best natural harbor on Lake Michigan. The only way to get from Lake Michigan to East Jordan, Boyne City and other sites on Lake Charlevoix by boat is via Charlevoix. As a result, much commercial, industrial, and recreational boat traffic passes through Charlevoix.
Charlevoix is named after Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix, a French explorer who travelled the Great Lakes and was said to have stayed the night on Fisherman's Island during a harsh storm. During this time Native Americans were thought to have lived in the Pine River valley. The Odawa and Ojibwe lived throughout northern Michigan prior to European colonization.

Pure Michigan Places to Visit Part 1 I Michigan Travel Vlog I
This is a state whose name itself is derived from Mishigamaa and that means large lake. It is surrounded by the great lakes. Pure Michigan is mostly known for its clear beaches, sandy dunes, lighthouses, andzzaza lakes. it doesn't matter where you are in the state you will never be more than 6 miles away from a lake.
Whenever People hear about Michigan, they talk about heavy snowfall and chilly winters. But this state has its own beauty. The same place that gets covered in inches of snow, looks amazing in the summer. And this vlog is about the beauty of this state in summer.
Ludington: a small town that is always busy in summer and is known for its iconic light houses. ludington state park is one of the best state parks in Michigan. a short 2 mile hike towards the Big Sable Point lighthouse takes you through the sand dunes. once you climb 130 steps to the top of the tower you could see spectacular view. one side covered in sand and the other side was calm with a pristine beach and beautiful blue lake michigan. The sounds of the wave and pleasant breeze would relieve anyone for the day to day stress of life.
North Breakwater Lighthouse located in Stearns Park downtown. This is the ideal place to see the best sunset in ludington. The lighthouse is located on the north breakwater pier at the end of Main Street. just look around ! you are not the only one here.
Saugatuck is another gem to explore. get a close look at nature from rentable kayaks, stand up paddleboards and even hydrobikes from area shops. for active visitors we highly recommend climbing 302 steps to the summit of mount baldhead for great views of Saugatuck, Douglas and Lake michigan. USA Today awarded Saugatuck as the best coastal town. Oval beach won one of the top 25 beaches in the world by Conde Nast. There are also other beaches such as Douglas beach and serene laketown beach.
Have you been to frederick meijer sculpture garden in grand rapids? if not we recommend visiting. It's quite expenasive as they charge $15 for entry but has great scluptures and peaceful gardens. great place to spend time with family and statues.
This is wgere I flew my drone. I am still learning. Cadillac is a great city for hunting and fishing. We went through the campgrounds and it was packed over Labor Day weekend. we gazed out onto the beaches of lake cadillac and lake mitchell.
Traverse city is a City known for its culinary scene, wine and lakes. We went in July during the busiest time of the year: the cherry festival .
We walked on the alligator hill trail, which lead us towards the sleeping bear dunes through beech maple forest. We got a glimpse of lake Michigan. Our dog, Snoop did a great job finding his way and leading us toward the dunes. We were unfortunate as it was foggy during that time of the day, but this is how it looks on a perfect day.
Then there was the Old mission light house, standing between the North pole and the equator. With a nice beach area, we spent time looking at the pleasing waves. Don’t forget to peek into the Hessler log cabin.
we walked on the main street called Front street in traverse city's downtown. There you will find Old-fashioned restaurants, bookstores, a theater, hobby shops, art stores and cherry republic …this list just goes on and on. We absolutely loved the ambiance and feel of an open minded, diverse, and artsy community. This is a dog friendly neighborhood with water bowls at every entrance. Snoop also made some new friends.
We stopped at charlevoix, a small town with French influence. It;s known for its mushroom houses. This is a fascinating and unique sight to see. you can even rent them but just don't knock on the door of any mushroom houses cause people do actually live there. We saw many kids playing in the water, a tranquil lake, boats and ships, and a mighty bridge.
We then continued our trip to Upper Michigan, but we chose a different route which was through the tunnel of trees. You look towards the right, left or up…and find beautiful green leafed tress everywhere (can you imagine traveling through the fall season as the colors of the leaves change?!). Driving through this tunnel which goes on for miles, makes you want to keep driving forever.
