Old St. George Church opens as new Crossroads Uptown
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio (WKRC) - Millions of dollars went into breathing new life into an old church in University Heights.
St. George Church sat empty for years before Crossroads Church bought the property and transformed it, and now they're hosting their grand opening Sunday.
“It’s a really big day, and I don’t think we could be any more excited, said Crossroads Uptown pastor, Lena Schuler.
Crossroads had previously been holding services at Bogart's, and now they're excited to move into their new space. This was the first time Crossroads had rehabbed an old church to make it new again.
Moving from Bogart’s over to here is a giant transition. We never turned and old church into a church again, said Schuler.
Schuler also says it wasn't a coincidence that the new church is opening on Welcome Weekend for the University of Cincinnati. She says that the new Crossroads wants to cater to the UC community.
“We’re a local church, and we’re multi-generational and diverse, and that’s really important to us. We know we sit right inside the footprint of UC’s main campus, and we’re targeting college students. We want them to be able to come here, find a church home here, Schuler said.
We want to be a light on the hill, said Brennan Hill. One thing we noticed is a lot of college students don’t have a strong feeling of community or feel disconnected from God, so we think with the new enrollment happening tomorrow at UC, it's just exploding, that we can be attractive and we want to connect kids to this place.
Schuler also says connecting with members and families of the Uptown communities and neighborhoods is important as well.
The old St. George's Church hasn't been used as a church in 25 years. Crossroads began rehabbing it a year and a half ago.
While they've made the space their own with their signature industrial, contemporary look, they've also managed to keep the original beauty of the former Catholic church, which was built in 1873, including the paint and stained glass windows.
The building will also be open during the week for people to stop in to grab a free coffee and study.

Craft Beer Boom: Small breweries continue opening in Tri-State
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Cincinnati is returning to its roots, or hops.
Once known as the beer capital of the nation, with dozens of breweries, the Queen City is experiencing a rebirth of suds. It's part of a nationwide explosion in small, local, craft breweries. The Ohio Craft Beer Convention is in Cincinnati the week of February 6. At the Ohio Craft Brewers Association Convention, what better person to ask about beer than Jacob Beer!
Jacob Beer and the craft beer industry have grown up together. He's with NDL Keg, one of many beer suppliers at the convention. Jim Rack, of Rack Draft Services, makes beer taps, or faucets as they're known in the trade. Ohio has nearly 200 craft breweries. That's a 20 percent increase over a year ago.
One in Cleveland and three in Cincinnati, the new Madtree facility in Oakley, Rivertown, and Brink Brewing in College Hill. There were more than a dozen craft breweries in greater Cincinnati.
Jacob Beer said, No, it's better. You can taste the richness in the flavor, the hopes, the experimental styles that go into it.
The craft beer industry is growing so quickly there are banks which specialize in crafting loans.
Kate Smith with Live Oak Bank/Craft said, Craft is really important. She continued, But the push is towards craft and local. I'd say over the past 10 years its been completely different.
Craft breweries are defined as brewing fewer than six-million barrels of beer per year. All of Ohio's craft breweries combined don't come close to that.
Anheuser-Busch, by comparison, brews more than 100-million gallons annually.

Myles Garrett suspended INDEFINITELY after helmet swing | CBS Sports HQ
The NFL took swift and sharp action against Myles Garrett less than 24 hours after he forcefully removed the helmet of Mason Rudolph and swung it at his head. The Cleveland Browns pass rusher was condemned on all fronts by teammates that included quarterback Baker Mayfield, who stated outright his expectation of a suspension, and how Garrett's actions had hurt the team going forward after their 21-7 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football.
On Friday, the league issued judgement, and Garrett has been suspended indefinitely, with All-Pro center Maurkice Pouncey -- who was seen throwing a punch -- along with Larry Ogunjobi also having been suspended.
