Natural Bridge Caverns - Discovery Tour in San Antonio Texas
The Natural Bridge Caverns are the largest known commercial caverns in the U.S. state of Texas. The name is derived from the 60 ft natural limestone slab bridge that spans the amphitheater setting of the cavern's entrance. The span was left suspended when a sinkhole collapsed below it.
The caverns are located near the city of San Antonio, Texas in the Texas Hill Country next to the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, a drive-through wildlife safari park. The caverns feature several unique speleothems and other geological formations. The temperature inside the cave is 21 degrees Celsius (70°F) year-round and the humidity rate is a constant 99 percent. The deepest part of the public tour is 180 feet below the surface, although undeveloped areas of the cavern reach depths of 230 feet.
The caverns are still very active and considered living. Due to the porosity of the limestone, rainwater travels downwards through the layers of rock, where it dissolves out calcite, a weak mineral that makes up all of the speleothems at Natural Bridge Caverns. After exiting the limestone, water enters the caverns where it flows and drips constantly throughout, causing the formations to retain a waxy luster that can be seen in few caverns.
History:
The caverns were discovered on March 27, 1960, by students Orion Knox Jr., Preston Knodell Jr., Al Brandt and Joe Cantu from St. Mary's University in nearby San Antonio. On their fourth trip into the caverns, the men discovered/explored just over a mile of passage. Subsequent explorations revealed 2 miles associated with what became known as the North Cavern.
After discovery, Orion Knox Jr. assisted the landowners in obtaining information and suggestions for development. Mrs. Clara Wuest (the landowner), wanted to show the world the cave under her property. Orion approached both the National Park Service and the Texas Park System. While both entities agreed that the cavern was substantial and merited development, both groups told the landowners that funds did not exist for their respective groups to undergo such an endeavor.
Mrs. Wuest then decided that she would fund development. Orion dropped out of school to assist. He also approached Jack Burch who had just finished work on developing the Caverns of Sonora near Sonora, Texas. Jack agreed to help and development began early in 1963. Mrs. Wuest remarried Harry Heidemann, a retired Texas Highway Patrolman in the early 1960s. Together, they started work on developing the cavern. The full-time development crew included Mrs. Wuest-Heidemann, Mr. Heidemann, Jack Burch, Orion Knox, and Reggie Wuest (Mrs. Wuest-Heidemann's son). Development on the cavern began in 1963 and work on lights and trails continued until opening day, July 3, 1964. The cavern has been opened ever since and is still owned and operated by family members.Natural Bridge Caverns became a registered United States National Natural Landmark in 1971.
During excavation of the entrance trail, a human tooth, arrowheads, and spearheads dating from 5,000 BC were found. Also, just inside the entrance, a jawbone and femur from an extinct species of black bear were discovered. This leads many to believe that uppermost areas of the cavern were used as a shelter by early peoples and animals at some point. An archaeological dig was recently done under the natural bridge. Archaeologists recovered arrow heads and other tools which further indicate the presence of early peoples at some point in history.

AFRICAN SAFARI || TEXAS STYLE! (Natural Bridges Wildlife Ranch)
My friends and I had a fantastic time visiting Natural Bridges Wildlife Ranch located in San Antonio, Texas. It was an hour drive thru inside the ranch. We went there at 9 am when they opened. The weather was good. Not too many cars in the line. Animals were great. Be careful!! The ostriches and Emu will basically stick their entire head and neck into the car to get food. I had to scarifies the whole bag of food to an Emu. LOL! Enjoy the video. please do comment and subscribe my channel for more videos.

Twin Reticulated Giraffes Born At Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch
Twin Reticulated Giraffes, the only living set of twins and the second reported set of living twins born in the United States, were delivered at Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch on May 10, 2013. The first-born female calf, Wasswa, weighed 95 pounds and was 4.5 feet tall. The second-born male calf, Nakato, weighed 125 pounds and was 5.5 feet tall.
Both Wasswa and Nakato are thriving, said Tiffany Soechting, Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch marketing director and animal specialist caring for the newborn giraffes.
The twin giraffes were the 19th and 20th giraffes born at Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, a 400-acre animal preserve recognized in Texas as a top family entertainment attraction. In operation since 1984, the ranch's successful breeding program spawned the twins' mother, Carol. Born in 2005, Carol was the 12th giraffe born at the ranch.
Caretakers at the ranch and ranch veterinarian Dr. Kenny Patin have been on high alert since the twins' birth, providing around-the-clock monitoring to assure the twins' health and vitality.
Male twin Nakato has been hand-reared since birth to ensure he receives adequate nutrition. Nakato is being re-introduced to his family through short, supervised visits to assure the mother does not perceive him as a threat. The twins are the mother's third birth. As twin births are rare, we had a concern that the mother would not be able to produce enough milk for both offspring, said Dr. Patin. We wanted to take prudent measures to guard the twins' health.
According to Laurie Bingaman Lackey, giraffe studbook keeper for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the twin giraffes' birth is the second set of living giraffe twins in the US and the ninth set of living twins born in the zoos of the world. A set each have also been born in Canada, Germany, the Czech Republic, England, France, and 2 sets to the same dam in South Korea. Since the 1830s there have been over 8,000 recorded giraffe births in zoos worldwide; the twins' birth at Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch are the 31st recorded set of twins. Three-quarters of twin pregnancies abort early in gestation or are stillborn. Only 9 sets of twins have been reported living at birth.
There are eight giraffes residing at Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, including the twins' father Marshall. Marshall is 10-years-old.
The average giraffe gestation is 15 months. Giraffes give birth standing up. Calves fall 6 feet to the ground, and stand up and run within an hour of birth. Giraffe calves are reliant on their mother's milk for up to 9-12 months. Giraffes are the tallest living land mammals with average height ranging from 16-19 feet.
Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch has been operated by the same family for generations and they are a big part of the New Braunfels community, said Judy Young, New Braunfels Convention and Visitors Bureau Director. They take amazing care of their animals. It's definitely going to be double the fun to visit this summer and watch Nakato and Wasswa grow.

SAN ANTONIO BY RV - Market Square & Natural Bridge Caverns
San Antonio by RV
We couldn’t be that close to San Antonio for so long and not swing by the Natural Bridge Caverns, Market Square or the Riverwalk!
So we took the RV down from Austin to knock off the bucket list in nearby San Antonio.
Most notably:
Natural Bridge Caverns
Market Square El Mercado
San Antonio Riverwalk
Alamo

Natural Bridge Caverns
If you’ve seen any earlier episodes of TRIPPED, you know I absolutely love pulling Finney out of the sunlight and into a dreary cave. In a fantastic turn of luck however, Finney surprised me on our San Antonio trip by taking ME to Natural Bridge Caverns.
While a bit less life threatening than walking over sticks placed over a chasm in Thailand, we nonetheless enjoyed that fantastic formations do be found at Natural Bridge. The cave looked like it was designed at Disneyworld- there was incredible variation and size of every type of cave formation.
Market Square El Mercado
Fin’s choice for her number one thing she wanted to do in ol San Antoin. El Mercado was great for photo ops but more of a tourist trap than anything we’d done in a while. If you’re looking to spend way too much money for mediocre tacos or corn in a cup than El Mercado might be your bag.
We did pull one great purchase out of Market Square though- an awesome set of horns for the front of our scooter. We’ve been running these bull horns for three months now and they’re a crowd pleaser. We still need a matching set for the front of the Winn though!
San Antonio Riverwalk
In this case, neither of us knew what to expect. The riverwalk is home to restaurants, bars, and boat rides. Based by how packed it was, everyone within the entire city of San Antonio also was at the riverwalk the night we went.
The Riverwalk was an alright place to visit but the size of the crowd and the lackluster food being served all around makes it a place that we wouldn’t be dying to get back to.
Alamo
We remembered it! Quickly as well! Accented by the neon lights of Ripleys Believe it or Not across the street, some of the historical significance of the building may have been lost on us that evening.
