Wildlife and Beautiful Beaches in Sri Lanka
Episode 035: Wild Sri Lanka (Wildlife and Beaches)
Welcome to our FINAL Sri Lanka episode!
Minneriya National Park
Visiting Minneriya National Park was one of the highlights of our travels through Sri Lanka. We took an afternoon safari to watch elephants in their natural habitat, and it was an incredible scene! We saw hundreds of elephants emerge right before sunset to drink from and play by the lake. Elephants are such playful creatures, but they can also be dangerous in certain situations.
Monkeys in Central Sri Lanka
We saw so many baby monkeys whilst visiting the Cultural Triangle. These monkeys looked like little alien babies, and they were fascinating to watch. We aren’t usually fans of monkeys (especially since one aggressive monkey stole my coconut in Koh Phi Phi), but these monkeys were cool! They didn’t bother anybody and just did their own thing.
Northern Sri Lanka Beaches
Jaffna is an incredible place to visit in Sri Lanka. Jaffna looks nothing at all the rest of Sri Lanka; even the language on the street signs have changed to angular Tamil from the curvy Sinhalese letters. The people were some of the friendliest we met during our one month in Sri Lanka. They also hassled us the least! Northern Sri Lanka is as wild and unexplored as it gets on this island nation.
Arugam Bay
A surfer’s paradise, Arugam Bay was the most touristy beach destination we visited in Sri Lanka. High season kicked in as monsoon season in the South kept surfers off the waves. If you visit Arugam Bay, definitely make the trip to Pottuvil Point to catch those frothy waves!
Tangalle
Tangalle was the most beautiful beach we visited in Sri Lanka. We loved being there in monsoon season (we only experienced short bouts of rain!), and having the beautiful white sand beaches all to ourselves! Watch our episode to
Weligama
Weligama is another surf town, perfect for beginners or those who want to learn how to ride the waves. We loved using Weligama as our homebase to explore Mirissa - home of the beautiful coconut tree hill. The beaches were busy with tourists enjoying sunset drinks and dinner. Weligama is just a short tuk-tuk ride from Galle, and definitely worth a visit!
Galle
Galle Dutch Fort was our final destination in Sri Lanka, and we absolutely loved wandering the colonial city. Because Galle is just a train ride away from Colombo, Galle is a popular getaway for both Sri Lankans and foreigners. If you visit Galle, we recommend staying at Antic Guesthouse - their service is the BEST we experienced throughout Sri Lanka.

through the park and are home to about 32 species of mammals, 125 species of birds, along with many reptiles and lagoon fauna species. For example, you can spot peafowls, monkeys chattering, elephants, elusive Sri Lankan leopards (Panthera pardus kotiya), especially at the end of the dry season as animals gather around water holes.

Sea Sports
With more than 13,000 km of coastline, warm 28-degree water and marine life is a great location for all aquatic activities. Many famous beaches benefit safe sea sports but not in monsoon winds.
Hikkaduwa, Tangalle on the west coast, Unawatuna on the south coast and Nilaveli on the east coast are all wonderful places for scuba diving and snorkeling. The south west coast of Sri Lanka is open to the same regular, long distance swells as Indonesia, making it an ideal choice for surfing. Sport fishing is relatively undeveloped, but 1,140 miles of shoreline and warm Indian Ocean currents ensure there is a plethora of fish in the sea, estuaries, mangrove lagoons and rivers.
White Water River Rafting and Canoeing
Some rivers originate from hills offer excellent fresh water sport facilities such as Kalani, Mahawalli, Kalu etc. For example Kelani River in Kitulgala is very popular among adventurers for white water rafting. Madu Ganga in the south for motorboat safari. Popular sites for canoeing are Sorabora lake Mahiyangana in the east, Kalu Ganga River (Black River) and the Kelani Ganga River in the southwest. Canoeing is also possible in ancient man made lakes, large reservoirs, lagoons and rivers that run swiftly down to sea.
Wild Life Jeep Safari
Before plantation era the island covered more than 70 per cent of forest cover but now only 20 per cent. That is national parks, forest reserves, and sanctuaries etc. The distribution of wildlife is mainly in national parks. There are seventeen national parks of Sri Lanka and more than 4000 elephants in the country. There are two national parks to see leopards, Willpattu in northwest and Yala in southeast arid zones. Minneriya, Udawalawa and Wasgamuwa are the best places to visit wild elephants. Maduru Oya national park will be open for visitors in near future with extra values like Vadda village and hot water springs.
Caving and Pot Holing
Sri Lanka is under developed as a caving region. This fascinating activity is becoming popular. About 45 main caves have being reported. Most of which seems to be formed in granite or gneiss. It is consist with just one or two chambers that were commonly used as dwellings in prehistoric times. Usually ash and shells are found there because snail cocking of prehistoric humans. There are number of limestone pot holes are around Kandy in the central and all around Sri Lanka for pot holing. Some of them are with stalagmite and stalactite, underground water ponds, waterfalls, and some distance long. The cave fauna is consisting with large spices of bats, geckos, frogs etc. Nightlife is not mysterious if you interested.
Night Jungle Walks
Camping is the best way of alternative accommodation with memorable experiences like knight walks in the forests, terrace rice fields, lake bunts gives you an amazing experience of night animals.
Community Based Tourism: The Best Way to See Sri Lanka
A Taste of Community Based Tourism
Our visit to Sri Lanka gave us an opportunity to experience Community Based Tourism first-hand
These kinds of tours, by Ecowave Travels, are at the core of responsible tourism, because our dollars go directly to the people of the community and in turn, we get an opportunity to immerse ourselves into both a cultural and outdoor experience while we travel.
We spent the morning starting at sunrise observing the fisherman and the wildlife of the Pottuvil lagoon. This place is the perfect place for a quiet, serene morning 'drive' on a raft, watching the lagoon wake up.
Then, one of the community guides took us on a wildlife drive through Kumana National Park.
The highlight was enjoying home cooked Sri Lankan food and staying in the village with a family during the duration of our stay.
Meaningful Travel Experiences like this are what enhances our connection to the world.
What is Community Based Tourism?
It is responsible tourism where your money goes directly back into a local community to support local projects. Residents get an opportunity to build their business, receive tourists and in turn, you get to see attractions and immerse in a cultural experience.

So Sri lankaa ???????? (Colombo, Habarana, Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Bentota, Beruwala and Galle)
Hello guys, I know it's been a really long break from editing but I am back with another travel video and this time we kicked off 2019 with a trip to Sri Lanka!
Alot of temples, sweaty treks, waterfalls and breathtaking beaches.
If you liked the video, you know the drill!
If you are travelling to Sri Lanka any time soon, down below i have given a brief description about my trip and therefore head start to plan your trip.
So we boarded from Delhi and it took us roughly 4 hours to reach Colombo. Through out this trip, we will be covering 6 major cities of Sri Lanka.
So we hired a minibus from Colombo and travelled to Habarana, which is a 3-hour drive. Habarana is famous for its elephant safari and open grasslands.
Maintain silence when inside the park as there have been incidents where the elephants charge on the jeeps due to annoyance.
We travelled a month later to the terrorist attacks, so apparently, the tourism sector went down and we got personalised services all the time. Plus point!
From Habarana, we started early for the UNESCO World Heritage site, The Sigiriya Rock. It is also considered to be the 8th wonder of the world and the view astonished me with the unique harmony between nature and human imagination. I’ll advise you to hire a local guide to know more about the systematically planned architecture. It is a must visit if you are in Sri Lanka.
The guide also told us there is a long queue for the trek during the peak season, so be well before time.
Next stop was Kandy, which is the hill capital of Sri Lanka. It is a small town situated amidst the hills. The weather was chilly so carry your fleece.
In Kandy, visit the famous temple of the ancient tooth relic, situated in the Royal Complex of the former kingdom of Kandy!
It's a Buddhist temple, so make sure you are covered entirely.
You should visit the local sweet vendors and try their authentic Lankan sweets!
Next in line is Nuwara Eliya, which is apparently is the place where Seeta Maa was held in captivatio also known Ashoka Vatika.. Nuwara Eliya is a hill station so the temperature drops significantly. Do carry warm clothes.
Make sure you visit Lake Gregory, which is the heart of the tea country hill city. It is famous for its tea plantations, so don’t forget to spill some tea, sis.
Shoutout to Indian summer for serving us the best Indian food in Lanka, situated right next to the lake in Nuwara Eliya.
On our way to Nuwara Eliya, we stopped to see the Ramboda waterfall surrounded by the tea plantations.
One can take a quick break, and enjoy the view with some good tea and snacks!
Onto my favourite city, Beruwala has the most chill vibe and one can enjoy water sports and snorkel out there!
We relaxed at the beach and spent the majority of the time in the pool!
Next day, we visited the city of Galle which was a Portuguese town. It has a beautiful aesthetic vibe to it and don’t forget to get clicked near the lighthouse.
Do visit the mama’s cafe, which is the original cafe of a very famous cafe chain in Sri Lanka.
Galle has very vintage shops, so one can buy antiques from there.
One can also visit Mirrisa, for the blue whale sightings in the Indian Ocean. But it’s risky when its raining and the sea is rough.
On our way back we stopped at Bentota for the river safari, which was sad so you can skip it. I’ll advise you to spend your time at the beach, and watch the sun go down.
The last day we planned to visit, Colombo, where one can do a day tour and visit the Odel mall for souvenirs.
Sri Lanka is a small and beautiful place to visit. Don’t forget to drink there most special coconut water.
Also be careful with the spices, because they have their meals cooked in a lot of spices.
Best places to visit in North Sri Lanka
This is my video guide from a recent trip and it's about the Best places to visit in the North of Sri Lanka.
I started in Colombo before heading North and then made my way down the middle of Sri Lanka and ended my trip in Negombo.

Places I visited:
