Old Town Market Square ... is by far the most popular place for resting and walking for both Varsovians and tourists. The old and charming architecture, quaint cafes and restaurants, small and enticing shops create a unique atmosphere that is not found in other cities in Europe. When the weather is warm, the square becomes filled with cafe tables and artists performing outside. Until the end of 18th century the Old town market square was the most important place in Warsaw. Regular fairs and festivities were held here. During World War II the market square turned into rubbles - but after many years of reconstruction it was restored to its original beauty. The Old town is the best place for walks. Most of this area is closed to traffic and it a paradise for pedestrians. Most interesting walks are in the vicinity of the market square and Royal Castle square. Here you will find many narrow, cobbled streets with quaint antique shops, cafes, and beautiful old houses. Piwna Street takes you across much of the Old Town and passes through multiple tourist attractions. Almost every building you will see in the Old Town will be old with unique architecture. Old Town is a blend of different styles - from gothic to baroque.
Barbakan Warszawski (The Warsaw Barbican) ... a semicircular fortified outpost and one of few remaining relics of the complex network of historic fortifications that once encircled Warsaw. Located between the Old and New Towns, it is a major tourist attraction.
Wystawa Powstanie Warszawskie ... 1944 Warsaw Uprising Memorial (description of uprising from a plaque at the memorial.) The Warsaw uprising against German occupation broke out on August 1, 1944. It was started by 23 thousand poorly armed soldiers of the Home Army of the Warsaw district under the command of General Antoni Chrusciel, code named Monter. Other underground units and Warsaw citizens joined the insurgents. Asserting control, civilian and military structures under the command of the Polish government in London began functioning openly, organizing administration, medical, services and rescue squads. A massive inflow of volunteers swelled insurgent ranks to 50 thousand troops. What began as an enthusiastic and spontaneous outbreak of fighting became a 63-day heroic struggle for liberation of the city by the home army's own forces before the Red Army, whose units had already reached the suburb of the Praga district, entered the capital.

Warsaw's Castle Square (Polish: Plac Zamkowy w Warszawie) is a historic square in front of the Royal Castle – the former official residence of Polish monarchs – located in Warsaw, Poland. It is a popular meeting place for tourists and locals. The Square (in a more or less triangular shape) features the landmark Sigismund's Column to the south-west and is surrounded by historic townhouses. The column commemorating King Sigismund III Vasa (a work by Clemente Molli, erected in 1644) is the oldest and one of the symbolic monuments of the city. On the east side of the square stands the Royal Castle reconstructed after the devastation of World War II. It was formerly the residence of the dukes of Mazovia, and then of the Polish kings and grand dukes of Lithuania from the 16th to 18th centuries. The Germans bombed and blew it up at the beginning of World War II (September 1939), and then completely destroyed in 1944–1945 (see picture below).
In 1949 the square was connected by an escalator to the newly formed Route W-Z (East-West Route), which runs under Castle Square through a tunnel; and the viaduct (leading to the Silesian-Dąbrowski Bridge) was built in the place of viaduct Pancer, destroyed during World War II. In 1907 the viaduct was modernized [by whom?] to handle electric trams that went over there less than a year later.
This square has witnessed many dramatic scenes in Polish history. Patriotic demonstrations took place there during the period before the outbreak of the January uprising of 1863. On 27 February 1861, Russian bullets killed five people. On 8 April 1861 five rota of infantry and two troops of Russian cavalry (about 1,300 people) led by General Stepan Aleksandrovich Khrulyov carried out a bloody massacre of civilians, resulting in the deaths of more than 100 people.
During martial law, the square became the scene of the particularly brutal riot, with ZOMO police rushing through demonstrations on 3 May 1982.

Notice how this nationally inspired color scheme is continued inside the stadium, where the seats are also white and red. One of the stadium’s most unique features is its retractable roof, which can open above the field.
Admire the view from Lookout Point in the upper stands. The stadium can accommodate more than 58,000 spectators. Aside from soccer games, it frequently hosts concerts and other events, with past performers such as Florence and the Machine, Paul McCartney and Coldplay.
Take advantage of the guided tours of the stadium, which are offered at regular intervals through the day. The tour includes access to a number of player-only and VIP zones. The stadium also hosts special lunches in its Business Club on Sundays, during which families can eat a meal while enjoying the view over the stadium.
Explore the area surrounding the stadium, including a municipal park where you’ll find paths for cycling, running and rollerblading. The park also hosts a variety of events throughout the summer, such as art exhibitions, so find out what is happening during your visit.
The National Stadium is located on the east bank of the Vistula River, about 2 miles (3 kilometers) from the Old Town. The stadium is open daily. Get here by bus or tram. Access to the stadium is free, but the tours have fees.

SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the Royal Castle in Warsaw which is a castle residency that formerly served throughout the centuries as the official residence of the Polish monarchs. It is located in the Castle Square, at the entrance to the Warsaw Old Town. The personal offices of the king and the administrative offices of the Royal Court of Poland were located there from the sixteenth century until the Partitions of Poland.
Burned and looted by the Nazi Germans following the Invasion of Poland in 1939 and almost completely destroyed in 1944 after the failed Warsaw Uprising, the Castle was completely rebuilt and reconstructed; reconstruction of the castle carried out in 1971-1984 was led by the Civic Committee, responsible for the reconstruction of Warsaw. It played a major role in Poland’s history and cultural life since the beginning of its existence, and continues to do so even today. During the second world war old town was completely destroyed but later they rebuilt the destroyed part after the war.

Warsaw's Old Town is the oldest historic district of the city. It is bounded by Wybrzeże Gdańskie, along the bank of the Vistula, and by Grodzka, Mostowa and Podwale Streets. It is one of Warsaw's most prominent tourist attractions. The heart of the area is the Old Town Market Place, with its restaurants, cafés and shops. Surrounding streets feature medieval architecture such as the city walls, the Barbican and St. John's Cathedral. Warsaw's Old Town was established in the 13th century. Initially surrounded by an earthwork rampart, prior to 1339 it was fortified with brick city walls. The town originally grew up around the castle of the Dukes of Mazovia that later became the Royal Castle. The Market Square (Rynek Starego Miasta) was laid out sometime in the late 13th or early 14th century, along the main road linking the castle with the New Town to the north. Until 1817 the Old Town's most notable feature was the Town Hall built before 1429. In 1701 the square was rebuilt by Tylman Gamerski, and in 1817 the Town Hall was demolished. Since the 19th century, the four sides of the Market Square have borne the names of four notable Poles who once lived on the respective sides: Ignacy Zakrzewski (south), Hugo Kołłątaj (west), Jan Dekert (north) and Franciszek Barss (east).
In the early 1910s Warsaw Old Town was the home of the prominent Yiddish writer Alter Kacyzne, who later depicted life there in his 1929 novel שטאַרקע און שוואַכע (Sterke un Sweche, The Strong and the Weak). As depicted in the novel, the Old Town at that time was a slum neighborhood, with poor families - some Jewish, other Christian - living very crowded in subdivided tenements which had once been aristocrats' palaces. Parts of it were bohemian, with painters and artists having their studios, while some streets were a Red-light district housing brothels. In 1918 the Royal Castle once again became the seat of Poland's highest authorities: the President of Poland and his chancellery. In the late 1930s, during the mayoralty of Stefan Starzyński, the municipal authorities began refurbishing the Old Town and restoring it to its former glory. The Barbican and the Old Town Market Place were partly restored. These efforts, however, were brought to an end by the outbreak of World War II. During the Invasion of Poland (1939), much of the district was badly damaged by the German Luftwaffe, which targeted the city's residential areas and historic landmarks in a campaign of terror bombing. Following the Siege of Warsaw, parts of the Old Town were rebuilt, but immediately after the Warsaw Uprising (August-October 1944) what had been left standing was systematically blown up by the German Army. A statue commemorating the Uprising, the Little Insurgent, now stands on the Old Town's medieval city wall. After World War II, the Old Town was meticulously rebuilt. As many of the original bricks were reused as possible. The rubble was sifted for reusable decorative elements, which were reinserted into their original places. Bernardo Bellotto's 18th-century vedute, as well as pre-World-War II architecture students' drawings, were used as essential sources in the reconstruction effort. The Old Town Market Place (Rynek Starego Miasta), which dates back to the end of the 13th century, is the true heart of the Old Town, and until the end of the 18th century it was the heart of all of Warsaw.[5] Here the representatives of guilds and merchants met in the Town Hall (built before 1429, pulled down in 1817), and fairs and the occasional execution were held. The houses around it represented the Gothic style until the great fire of 1607, after which they were rebuilt in late-Renaissance style. Castle Square (plac Zamkowy) is a visitor's first view of the reconstructed Old Town, when approaching from the more modern center of Warsaw. It is an impressive sight, dominated by Zygmunt's Column, which towers above the beautiful Old Town houses. Enclosed between the Old Town and the Royal Castle, Castle Square is steeped in history. Here was the gateway leading into the city called the Kraków Gate (Brama Krakowska). It became to develop in the 14th century and continued to be a defensive area for the kings. The square was in its glory in the 17th century when Warsaw became to country capital. And it was here that in 1644 King Władysław IV erected the column to glorify his father Sigismund III Vasa, who is best known for moving the capital of Poland from Kraków to Warsaw.

Warsaw North, City Walk - Poland 4K Travel Channel
Instead of going directly from the Castle Square to the north to the Old Town Market Square, we walk first through Kanonia Street to Kanonia-Square. In the middle is the Warsaw Wish Bell. Allegedly your wishes are fulfilled when you circle the massive bronze bell. The square lies behind the Gothic St. John's Archcathedral and used to be the associated cemetery. Later one dissolved the cemetery and converted it into apartment buildings. In the eastern corner there is a curious building, house no. 18. It is the house with the narrowest facade in Europe. The facade is less than 2 m wide. It was built in this way because at that time the property tax was levied on the basis of the width of the facade.
From here we reach the Old Town Market Place in a few steps. It forms the historical center of Warsaw. After the nearly complete destruction by the Nazis at the end of the 2nd World War, one rebuilt the Old Town from 1949 to 1955 as true to the original as possible. In 1980 it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Thus the old town presents itself almost exactly like in the 15th century.
We let the hustle and bustle, and the pictures of this fantastic scenery have an effect on us for a while. Then we walk to the front section of the cathedral. Then we turn around, pass the Old Town Market Square again and go to the Barbican. This fortified outpost outside the city walls lies between the Old Town and the New Town.
Via the Freta, we pass the New Town Market Place with the sacrament inner church of St. Kazimierz. It served as a military hospital during the Warsaw Uprising. Later, the dome collapsed during a bombing raid and hundreds of injured persons, doctors, and nurses died.
We turn into Kościelna street and stand in front of the 5-star Mamaison Hotel Le Regina. But we change our minds and go to the Zakroczymska Street, leave the school for hearing impaired and deaf children on the right and arrive at Legionów Fort. It consists of a three-story artillery tower. The fort was part of the Citadel and later the Warsaw Fortress. From the beginning of the 20th century, it was a prison.
Further south, we reach the Multimedia Fountain Park. In the evening, colorful light and water games are performed here, every Friday and Saturday from May to September. On the other side of the Vistula is an amusement park with a beautiful beach.

Anstelle direkt vom Schlossplatz nach Norden zum Altstadtmarkt zu gehen, gingen wir durch die Kanonia Straße zum Kanonia-Platz. In der Mitte steht die Warschauer Wunschglocke. Angeblich werden die Wünsche erfüllt, wenn man die massive Bronzeglocke umkreist.
Der Platz liegt hinter der gotischen Warschauer Kathedrale (Johanneskathedrale) und war früher der zugehörige Friedhof. Der wurde später aufgelöst und von Mietshäusern umbaut. In der östlichen Ecke gibt es ein kurioses Gebäude, das Haus Nr. 18. Es ist das Haus mit der schmalsten Fassade Europas. Die Fassade hat eine Breite von weniger als 2 m. Es wurde bewusst so gebaut, denn die Grundsteuer wurde auf Basis der Fassadenbreite erhoben.
Von hier aus erreichen wir in wenigen Schritten den Altstadtmarkt. Er bildet das historische Zentrum Warschaus. Nachdem am Ende des 2. Weltkrieges die Altstadt von den Nazis fast vollständig zerstört wurde, wurde sie von 1949 bis 1955 so weit wie möglich originalgetreu wieder aufgebaut. 1980 wurde sie in das UNESCO Weltkulturerbe aufgenommen. Damit präsentiert sich die Altstadt fast genau so wie im 15. Jahrhundert.
Wir lassen eine Weile das Treiben und die Bilder dieser fantastischen Kulisse auf uns einwirken, bevor wir zur Vorderfront der Kathedrale gehen. Danach kehren wir wieder um, passieren nochmals den Altstadtmarkt und gehen zum Barbakane, einem befestigten Außenposten außerhalb der Stadtmauern. Er liegt zwischen Altstadt und Neustadt.
Entlang der Freta, passieren wir den Neustädter Marktplatz mit der Sakramentinnenkirche des hl. Kasimir. Sie diente während des Warschauer Aufstandes als Lazarett. Später stürzte die Kuppel bei einem Bombenangriff ein und hunderte Verwundete, Ärzte und Krankenschwestern kamen zu Tode.
Wir biegen in die Kościelna Straße ab und stehen vor dem 5-Sterne Mamaison Hotel Le Regina. Doch wir überlegen es uns anders und gehen die
Zakroczymska Straße weiter, lassen die Sonderschule für Hörbehinderte und gehörlose Kinder rechts liegen und gelangen zum Fort Legionów, das aus einem dreigeschossigen Artillerieturm besteht. Das Fort war Teil der Zitadelle und später der Warschauer Festung. Ab dem Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts war hier ein Gefängnis untergebracht.
Weiter nach Süden, erreichen wir den Multimedia Fountain Park. Abends werden hier farbenprächtige Licht- und Wasserspiele geboten. Sie werden immer Freitag und Samstag von Mai bis September gezeigt. Auf der anderen Seite der Weichsel ist ein Freizeitpark mit schönem Strand.
