The Yaohan chain of department stores in Hong Kong has collapsed, a victim of the financial crisis that has plagued the region since July.
The nine stores in Hong Kong and one in Macau were shut down on Friday (21/11). The chain's failure came after the Japanese parent company collapsed under huge debts in September.

HONG KONG: THOUSANDS QUEUE FOR STORES FINAL CLEARANCE SALE

Thousands of people in Hong Kong queued from dawn on Saturday to take advantage of the Yaohan department stores' final clearance sale.
Liquidators say the bankruptcy sale will attract more than 40-thousand bargain hunters at each of their nine stores in Hong Kong.
The Yaohan stores, with debts estimated at 500 (m) million Hong Kong dollars (64 (m) million U-S dollars) , closed its doors last Thursday, after its parent group filed for bankruptcy in Japan.
The department stores' two-day clearance sale began mid-morning in Hong Kong.
Thousands had been queuing up for at least six hours to secure their spot in the massive queue.
This Yaohan store, located in a busy residential district on the Kowloon peninsula, is one of the largest in Hong Kong.
These residents were the first in line and they could not wait to get their hands on appliances and clothing - provided the prices were slashed considerably.

If it's expensive, I'm certainly not going to buy anything. I won't buy anything unless it's 70 percent of the regular price. Sometimes they do go down as low as 70 percent off some remaining merchandise.

The first group of 50 shoppers were allowed in minutes before the opening sale.
Police and security guards were on hand to ensure the crowd remained orderly allowing only 50 people in every five minutes.
Barricades were erected and road blocks were set up around the area to cordon off crowds.
Inside the shop however, there were no barriers to the bargains.
Shoppers were snapping up everything from clothing - to rugs and pillows.
Liquidators deployed more than 500 security guards at nine different Yaohan outlets.
And former staff members were recruited to work during the sale at twice their regular salary.
Prices were cut down to as much as 60 percent off regular prices.
This woman was the first to leave the Yaohan clearance sale.
She waited several hours to get in, and only bought this toy car for 23-dollars - sixty percent off the regular price.
Meanwhile, police were still outside controlling crowds and so far, they say all has gone smoothly.

At every junction, we've deployed a policeman. There were some people trying to cut in line, but we stopped them and sent them away. But so far, there have been no real problems.

The closure of Yaohan caused a loss of jobs for nearly three-thousand workers, but the closing sale will benefit thousands of others.
However, Yaohan is only accepting cash during the two-day sale with stores open for 12 hours a day.
Liquidators say Yaohan must clear all its items by Sunday.
