Palm Beach County Pools welcome College Swimmers
For three weeks in December and January, College Swim Teams from around the country travel to Palm Beach County’s Aquacrest Pool and North County Aquatic Complex to train for the fall season. The teams travel from as far west as Iowa to as far north as Michigan to escape frigid temperatures that make it difficult to train. As students from Michigan State and New York’s Wagner College explain, Palm Beach County’s palm trees and beaches allow them to take a mental break during the winter.
Aquacrest Pool and North County Aquatic Complex are owned and operated by the Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation. Providing for athletic programming and facilities is one of the core services of the Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department.

Manatee Traffic Jam!
Manatee traffic jam!! This determined manatee worked hard to get out of this big pile of blubbery manatees. The manatees had all converged in a small area in Satellite Beach, Florida, to keep warm due to unusually cool temperatures in late February and early March 2010. Manatees, or sea cows, are a vulnerable species that has been in decline in recent decades due to increased motor boat traffic. They are exceedingly gentle and herbivorous animals. Sadly, it is very rare to see a manatee without extensive scarring on its body from contact with boat propellers.

Day Hike at Little Manatee River State Park, Wimauma, Florida.
The Little Manatee River begins in a swampy area near Fort Lonesome and flows almost 40 miles before emptying into Tampa Bay. The river has been designated an Outstanding Florida Water and is part of the Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the rare ecosystems found within the park, including sand pine and oak scrub and oxbow wetlands, which can be explored by hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, or camping at Little Manatee River State Park. The Little Manatee River flows for 4.5 miles, through eleven unique natural communities within the park. The park boasts one of the premier hiking trails of Southwest Florida, a 6.5 mile stacked loop located in the wilderness area in north half of the park. The Oxbow Nature Trail, accessible from the main picnic area in the south half of the park, makes a one mile loop along scrub ridges that skirt the main river and an oxbow wetland. In addition, over 15 miles of equestrian and multi-use trails meander through the southern half of the park. Come picnic in one of the riverside pavilions or stay for the night in the full facility campground. Little Manatee River State Park is one of the best kept secrets of Hillsborough County, and has a little something for everyone.
