Best Single Month of San Diego Whale Watching Ever!
March was unlike anything I could have imagined. Humpback Whales tore through Southern California like the famished behemoths they are! Most of the time, Humpback Whales blast past the Southern California on their way to feeding grounds further north, but an abundance of bait in Bight has lead to many of these whales feasting in our waters before heading north. Much of the Southern California Bight has resembled a typical Monterey Bay day with spectacular displays of lunge feeding, breaching, and general awesomeness! In all the sightings were as followed:
148(!) Humpback Whales
117 Gray Whales
12,500 Common Dolphins
150 Pacific White-Sided Dolphins
8 Offshore Bottlenose Dolphins
10 Risso's Dolphins
3 Blue Sharks
2 Mola Mola's

Balboa, Panama to San Diego, California 18
Reefing the mainsail.
This, the final passage of my sixth circumnavigation, was slow and hard. It took 46 days for vbg to sail 3300 miles. Five of the six full weeks of the passage were five of the six slowest weeks of the circumnavigation and two of the days were by far the shortest days runs, one of 16 miles noon to noon, another of only 14.
It is only a slight over simplification to say that the first 1500 miles were windless and the last 1500 miles to windward.
There was frustration, despair, and little good sailing and joy. In the absence of joy there is much to be said for honor and perseverance.
The passage log can be found here:

Fisherman's Landing
San Diego, CA

Fishing on the Condor. The Condor boat is a blast and Fisherman’s Landing in San Diego is the place to go if you want to charter a sportfishing expedition. Fisherman’s Landing is also a great place to rent and buy gear for the sport fishing voyage.
Sport fishing on the Condor was an epic trip. Tons of blue fin tuna were caught and 132 lb big daddy was the biggest on the sport fishing boat.
Everyone had fun fishing on the Condor. Sport fishing through Fisherman’s Landing was awesome and the tuna were everywhere. The fish were so big and the Condor’s deck hands were great!
They helped everyone stay focused and kept the fish coming up and onto the sport fishing boat.
Sportfishing on the Condor was an experience that will last a lifetime and tuna fishing on the Condor was so fun.
I expect the next trip will have many tuna and even more big blue fins. Take my advice and fish on the Condor and book your next sport fishing excursion through Fisherman’s Landing with the Condor fishing boat.

DIALOG FROM THE VIDEO:
Hello. My name is Bill Hyder and I'm the Director for the National University Polytechnic Institute. Located in beautiful San Diego, California, National University Polytechnic Institute offers an exciting opportunity to explore an adventurous career as a commercial diver.
The Professional Certificate in Marine Technology is a commercial diving program providing our students with the technical diving skills needed for entry into the diving industry as commercial divers. The program is a fast past immersion into surface applied and scuba diving which include air and helium-oxygen elements, diving safety, professional work habits, underwater work skills, and the diving science needed to become a commercial diver. Students will develop the problem solving, team building, and communications skills appropriate to this program. Upon completion of the core training, students will select one of two professional diving concentrations.
The Diving Medical Technician concentration prepares students in the medical aspects of diving and delivers advanced training in hyperbaric medicine. Dive medics are respected professionals who perform regular work as divers and, when necessary, respond to medical emergencies on the job. Graduating as a diving medical technician will qualify you as working diver as well as a dive medic for underwater jobs inland and offshore. This concentration also qualifies you to take the emergency medical technician (EMT) exam through the National Registry.
The Non-Destructive Testing concentration prepares students to conduct a number of advanced underwater inspection and testing techniques that are important for ensuring the quality of underwater construction. The program is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform a variety of inspections to locate and determine the condition of structures, subsea pipelines, and platforms. Students are trained in a variety of nondestructive testing methods to inspect metals, welds and non-metallic materials. Graduate as a non destructive testing technician and you will be trained to American Society for Nondestructive Testing standards in ultrasonic , magnetic particle, dive penetrant, and visual testing and be ready to go to work on inland or offshore projects. Training requires time in the classroom as well as time in the dive tank. With the state-of-the-art classrooms and a 44,000 gallon freshwater dive tank our students receive the best dive training in the world.
With two classrooms equipped with hyperbaric chambers the dive medic program offered here is second to none. With top of the line non-destructive testing equipment students operate at a high level using cutting edge technology to prepare them for the job market. The commercial diving program at National University Polytechnic Institute offers its students the opportunity to become highly trained in a field that offers an endless supply of excitement and adventure. Pole & Line fishing trip Maldives // Lhaviyani atoll // Naifaru & Felivaru
So I wanted to experience fishing myself and this video is a summary of two days fishing. It was a great experience, the crew was nice and fortunately I met two of the fishermen before so they were able to explain the procedure of the fishing trips.
I also managed to catch a few fish myself, but as you can see, I was more focused on my balance, constantly watching where the fish was flying (as they not always go straight in the net or the holds/holes), avoiding the big and sharp hooks, holding myself while on the slippery deck and not getting in their way.
Fishing consists of two essential parts: bait fishing first (day1) and the actual tuna fishing (day2). Sometimes they stay away for a few days; depending on the size of the boat, the availability of ice on the boat and the amount of fish caught.
Bait fishing techniques in the Maldives differ a little bit from island to island.
Two or three men, called spotters, jump in the water with their goggles and see if there are schools of small bait fish. Whenever they spot fish (and it might take some time to find these places), they stay in the water to mark the places or swim along if the bait swims away. The skills and experience of the spotters make up for the lack of state-of-the-art equipment! Nobody used a snorkel, the straps of the masks were provisionally repaired, the fins were old and for sure not the right size and some didn’t even use fins at all! Positioning the net is really hard work and being able to hold your breath is an advantage.
Once the location is agreed on, the buoys go in the water first to mark the fishing net position opposite the boat. Then they throw in the net and divide the ropes. They need about 6 ropes on each 'side' of the net. Then two or three people take long ropes with a heavy metal bolt attached to a buoy in case they drop the rope by mistake). They let the metal bounce on the sea floor to direct the school of fish to the net while making sure the fish stay together. This is probably the most decisive part of a successful catch! The captain was constantly shouting to the crew telling them what to do, pointing to the man aboard who has to pull the fishing net and telling the men at sea were to cling with their weights. The captain would then swim fast to the boat and climb aboard to lead the last part, the actual intake of the bait.
In our case it took five catches to have enough bait for the following day.
I joined them two times in the water and I hope this explanation makes the video clearer assuming that without the explanation some people would not have understood what was exactly happening
The second day we left @ midnight. Around 5.00 we arrived at buoy 365, a marker I recognized from one of the movies I saw months ago, and there were two other boats.
I waited for something to happen. They used binoculars to check, but I couldn’t see any evident signal when they suddenly started to move. Everybody knew what to do. Two men started throwing bait in the water and six men took their positions at the back of the boat. The fishing rods have a hook acting as a lure and which the tuna bites into; the game is on. It looks like an easy job; you throw the bait in the water, spray water and the tuna will come and bite. So what skills do you need except from taking care of the lines and hooks?
You can’t predict the actual direction of the tuna. It might be that you catch ten tuna in 30 seconds and all is going perfectly well and the next fifteen minutes you catch nothing while you're still throwing bait in the water. The wind and currents, the other boats, sharks and probably other things you can't control and of which I don’t know about (yet).
After our first two 'turns' we had breakfast. I had never had such fresh tuna, they used a frying pan that has never been washed, it's not really a well-equipped and ‘clean’ kitchen with two “pits” and some unidentifiable objects used for cooking and eating. The disc roshies were also very very tasty (see video).
The last and most funny part was a shark encounter. I used my GoPro camera because it has a very wide angle on a three meter pole, only provisionally taped as my extension pole was not long enough to get an overview of the boat, and not intended to hold underwater at all. The sharks stayed swirling around the boat after we stopped fishing and I tried to record them. Suddenly one of the guys was standing next to me holding a tuna on a line and dropping it. Slowly the sharks were approaching and even too close paying attention to the camera with their mouth open. I think the footage is funny and in the end they feed the sharks.
Anyway, it was a life time experience; the crew was really taking care of me and very friendly. The combination fishing and visiting the factory the next day provided me with a real insight in the importance of fishing for the Maldivian people and its communities.
I was really proud to walk home with MY tuna and it felt a little bit like one of the guys :)
