Bald Head Island - a incredible island off the coast of North Carolina & close to Wilmington.
Bald Head Island - historically called Smith Island - is a small village that borders the Cape Fear River to west and the ocean to the east. The small village of 158 people is accessible by ferry from the small city on the other side of Cape Fear River - Southport. Once you get on the island - they do not allow cars - so you will need to rent a golf cart to get around.
While there enjoy the beach on the east side or the lighthouse - Old Baldy - on the west side close to the ferry station. Old Baldy Lighthouse is the oldest still standing lighthouse in the state of North Carolina and was built in 1817.
Bald Head Island is also a popular place for sea turtle nesting and due to the abundance of sea turtles - the residents use the phrase that they are on Turtle Time..
This island of less than 6 square miles is a wonderful place to vacation or the spend the day.

Join Travis Gilbert of Old Baldy Lighthouse & Smith Island Museum of History and Katy Menne of NC Maritime Museum at Southport as they discuss the US Life-Saving Service in the Lower Cape Fear. Sail back into the past and learn about the men who performed daunting rescues and what role the Life-Saving Services played in the community.

Bald Head Island, North Carolina
Bald Head Island, historically Smith Island, is a village located on the east side of the Cape Fear River in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States. Compared to the city of Wilmington to the north, the village of Bald Head Island is small and somewhat remote. It is only accessible by ferry from the nearby town of Southport. There are few cars on the island; instead, residents drive modified electric golf carts. Bald Head Island is nationally recognized for its sea turtle nesting activity.
The population of the village was 158 at the 2010 census. The village is part of the Wilmington metropolitan area.

The Installation of Nancy J. Cable, Ph.D
Chancellor Cable is formally installed as UNC Asheville’s Eighth Chancellor in a special ceremony in Kimmel Arena on Friday, April 26, at 3 p.m., joined by local legislators, UNC System leaders, higher education colleagues, friends and the campus community. Author, educator and interfaith leader Dr. Eboo Patel gives the invocation. Dr. John Kuykendall, president emeritus of Davidson College offers the benediction. Delegates from public and private colleges and universities, and representatives from the Board of Governors and legislature also participate.
