Strong Towns: A Bottom-Up Revolution to Rebuild American Prosperity
In the Strong America presentation, Strong Towns President and Founder Charles L. Marohn, Jr. highlights some of the most powerful stories in his book Strong Towns: A Bottom Up Revolution to Rebuild American Prosperity, and uses those insights to highlight a path to community prosperity that’s as unique as your place.
Using an innovative, hands-on approach, The Strong America presentation begins by showcasing why so many towns in North America are struggling financially despite decades of robust growth, and then invites the audience to “choose their own adventure” from a range of presentation tracks and go deeper into just one area where their unique community can make a change today. Designed to be dynamic and bespoke to each town, the Strong America presentation is part community conversation, part lecture from an expert, and the catalyst you need for your place to become financially stronger.

American Baritone Thomas Chalmers (1884-1966) / Carry me back to old Virginny (Bland) / Recorded: March 28, 1912 / (played on Brunswick 212 phonograph with Ultona reproducer)
Thomas Hardie Chalmers (20 October 1884 - 11 June 1966): American opera singer, actor, and filmmaker. Chalmers was born on October 20, 1884 in New York City, the son of Thomas Hardie and Sophia Amanda (De Bann) Chalmers. In 1909, he went to Florence to study singing with Vincenzo Lombardi and made his operatic debut in May 1911 in Fossombrone as Marcello in La bohème. His first appearance in the United States was as Jack Rance in The Girl of the Golden West with Henry Wilson Savage's English Grand Opera Company. Chalmers toured the United States with the company from 1911 to 12. He then sang as the leading baritone with the Boston National Opera Company and the Century Opera Company before making his Metropolitan Opera debut on November 17, 1917 as Valentin in Faust. He went on to appear regularly at the Met until 1922 and sang in the world premiere of Shanewis, the US premiere of Mârouf, and the first Met performances of La forza del destino and Crispino e la Comare. His recordings were all made for Edison and covered a wide range of repertoire from folk songs to opera; he recorded both on cylinder and the Edison Disc Record formats. Following a throat operation, Chalmers withdrew from opera and became a stage and film actor. His many stage roles included several Broadway premieres such as Landolfo in Pirandello's The Living Mask (Henry IV), 1924; Doctor Schindler in Schnitzler's The Call of Life (Der Ruf des Lebens), 1925; Captain Adam Brant in O'Neill's Mourning Becomes Electra, 1931; Ben Loman in Miller's Death of a Salesman, 1949; and Richard Bravo in Maxwell Anderson's The Bad Seed, 1954. One of Chalmers's earliest film roles was The Minister in the 1923 silent film Puritan Passions, based on Percy MacKaye's play The Scarecrow, which was in turn based on Feathertop, by Nathaniel Hawthorne. His last film role was The Judge in Martin Ritt's The Outrage, released in 1964. Chalmers also produced and directed several short comedy films written by Robert Benchley, including The Sex Life of the Polyp and The Treasurer's Report, both released in 1928.[5] His voice can be heard as the narrator in two documentary films by Pare Lorentz, The Plow That Broke the Plains (1936) and The River (1938), both with scores by Virgil Thomson. In the 1950s and 60s, Chalmers appeared on television as an actor in several drama anthology series including Westinghouse Studio One, CBS Television Workshop, Kraft Television Theatre, The DuPont Show of the Month and Play of the Week. He also appeared in single episodes of The Further Adventures of Ellery Queen, The Defenders, Mister Peepers, and several other weekly series. Chalmers' wife, Vilma Fiorelli, was originally from Florence. They were married in London on June 24, 1913. One of the couple's daughters, Vilma Fiora Chalmers, married the banker Alfred Hayes in 1937. Thomas Hardie Chalmers died on June 11, 1966 at the Laurelton Nursing Home in Greenwich, Connecticut. He was survived by his wife and his daughter, Vilma Hayes.

PARANORMAL: The Ghost and Murder of Mamie Thurman
PLEASE SHARE: October 22nd, 1932. 31 year old Mamie Thurman is found murdered, shot twice in the head and her throat cut from ear to ear, atop Trace Mountain in Logan County, West Virginia. Mamie, wife of Logan County Police Officer, Jack Thurman, was found to have been having a 2 year love affair with the head of the Logan City Commission, Harry Robertson. Police arrested Robertson and his African American Man Friday Clarence Stephenson for Mamie's murder.
A sensational pre-trial hearing and trial followed. Logan County, West Virginia, and most of the United States watched. Representatives of both the white and African American press showed up to cover what promised to be a trial celeb. Large, powerful names in Logan County and West Virginia followed the four-day trial as if it were a radio soap opera.
In October 1932, Clarence Stephenson was found guilty of Mamie's murder and sentenced to life in West Virginia's Moundsville prison. Stephenson appealed his case all the way to West Virginia's Supreme Court. The verdict was upheld. He died in 1942, maintaining his innocence to the very end. The outcome of the trial is still debated to this very day. Local residents soon dubbed Mamie The Vixen of Stratton Street, a name to which she may have taken posthumous offense.
Local legend tells that Mamie Thurman's spirit still haunts the roadway along the old coal mine road on 22 Mountain where her lifeless body was found. A ghost in search of answers and absolution. Also, the precise location of her 1932 burial has been lost to time, the elements and vandals. Today, Thurman's final resting place has evolved into a mystery of its own...one which you, the viewer, may be able to help resolve. Is Thurman buried in Logan Memorial Park in West Virginia or in the Old Liberty Cemetery in Bradfordsville, Kentucky?
Is Mamie Thurman trying to tell us that she is angry at how her image is treated by history? Or is she upset that her final resting place now belongs only to the ages? Is she perhaps saying that Stephenson was innocent of her murder? Is she hinting that others may have been involved in her murder and have escaped justice for 86 years?
You must decide the answers to these questions yourself.

From Boomtown to Ghost Town - Virginia City, Montana
Virginia City was founded after gold was discovered near Alder Creek in 1863. The boomtown became the capital of the newly established territory of Montana in 1865, and held onto that role for 10 years. A number of Montana firsts took place in Virginia City.
Due to rampant crime, a vigilante group, the Vigilance Committee, took matters into their own hands until territorial law enforcement could be established.
Like many mining boomtowns, things eventually went bust, and Virginia City became a ghost town. In the 1940s, Charles and Sue Bovey started to buy up the town and began to restore it, resulting in the establishment of the Historic District of Virginia City and Nevada City.
The Photos (in order)
C14A1852 - Madison County Courthouse
C14A1872 - Kiskadden Stone Block was Virginia City's first stone building; it is believed that the Vigilantes met upstairs
C14A1855 - The Hangman's Building, where in 1864 the Vigilantes hanged five road agents; it would later house the Virginia City Water Company, run by Sarah Bickford; born a slave, and widowed twice, Bickford came to own the city's water utility; enterprising as ever, she installed a trap door which for a fee she would open so visitors could see the beam that the Vigilantes use to hang the road agents
C14A1885 - Once a stable, this building was converted into the Opera House, a theatre that is home to the Virginia City Players, the oldest professional acting company in Montana
C14A1888 - This shop was restored to its historic appearance
C14A1895 - Virginia City retains its old west character
C14A1901 - Stonewall Hall was one of several places where the Montana territorial legislature met and the oldest one still standing
C14A1907 - Boot Hill Cemetery was Virginia City's first cemetery and where the five road agents killed by the Vigilantes were buried; their graves were marked in 1899

Sissel Kyrkjebø - Shenandoah - 2001
Sissel, the international singing sensation from Norway, is widely regarded as one of the finest and most talented sopranos in the world. Her crystalclear voice has made Sissel a national institution in Norway. Sissel has sung all over the world, selling over ten million solo albums. She contributed the haunting vocal tracks for the soundtrack to Titanic. She has been doing great duets with singers like Placido Domingo, Andrea Bocelli, Bryn Terfel, Jose Carreras, Russell Watson, Mario Frangoulis, Charles Aznavour, Neil Sedaka and Josh Groban. A very remarkable voice you will only hear once in your lifetime.
Shenandoah (also called Oh Shenandoah, or Across the Wide Missouri) is an American folk song, dating to the early 19th century. The lyrics may tell the story of a roving trader in love with the daughter of an Indian chief; in this interpretation, the rover tells the chief of his intent to take the girl with him far to the west, across the Missouri River. Other interpretations tell of a pioneer's nostalgia for the Shenandoah River Valley in Virginia, and a young woman who is its daughter; or of a Union soldier in the American Civil War, dreaming of his country home to the west of the Missouri river, in Shenandoah, Iowa (though the town lies some 50 miles east of the river). The provenance of the song is unclear.
The song is also associated with escaped slaves. They were said to sing the song in gratitude because the river allowed their scent to be lost.
The Shenandoah area made many parts like wheels and seats for wagons going west. These parts were assembled in Conestoga Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and settlers set out in Conestoga wagons down the Ohio River, on the Mississippi and west up the Missouri River. Lyrics were undoubtedly added by rivermen, settlers, and the millions who went west. With possible origins in Virginia, noting that its title is also the name of a Virginia river, the song has been considered for Virginia's official state song.

PLOT (Wikipedia): Dave Harmon (Clint Walker), a former lieutenant in the U.S. Army is sent to Yuma as the new United States Marshal. His wife was raped and son killed and the only description of the criminals responsible was they were wearing army uniforms. He served in several locations as U.S. Marshal and all were near an army post. Yuma is a city with an army post commanded by Major Lucas (Peter Mark Richman) and an Indian reservation nearby.
Harmon rides into Yuma as the newly assigned U.S. Marshal and immediately encounters two drunk rabble rousers, the King brothers, who have hijacked a stage coach outside of town. One is killed in a saloon by Harmon when he draws his gun and the other locked up in the town jail. The second brother is subsequently murdered, shot in the back, using a gun from the Marshal's office during a nighttime jail break organized by Sanders (Robert Phillips), who is an associate of the freight company owner (Barry Sullivan), in an effort to get the third King brother, cattleman (Morgan Woodward) to kill the Marshal. The murderer had tricked army Captain White (John Kerr) into coming with him to the jail and being an accomplice to the crime, as the freight owner, his employee Sanders, and the Captain are all involved in an ongoing scheme to defraud the indians out of cattle they need for food that is due them according to a treaty.
The elder King brother rides into town and demands justice. He gives Harmon time to find his other brother's killer or he will return with his men and kill the Marshal. Marshal Harmon, showing no fear, but only a desire to do his official duty, sets out to find the killer and unravel the related corruption involving the indians, who also threaten to revolt, but come to his assistance as the story unfolds.

Reviews
A Pistol for Ringo is an above-average Spaghetti Western. The anti-hero (Gemma) and villain (Sancho) are both very charismatic, and each has a good sense of humor. The basic plot situation is interesting: Fleeing from a bank hold-up in which their leader was wounded, a gang of bandits takes refuge at a farm. Although the farm is surrounded, the posse cannot attack because of the hostages. The anti-hero is highly paid to infiltrate and destroy the gang, and recover the money. The film has some unusual twists; for example, the bandits are executing two hostages per day, even after the anti-hero joins the gang, and he makes no effort to halt the executions. There is an interesting contrast between the behavior of the anti-hero (Gemma) and the sheriff (Martin) who behaves like a traditional Western hero. The film has a nice music score by Ennio Morricone. But somehow, this film failed to fully satisfy this viewer. The heroine is dull and bland, too much of the film takes place at the farm, and the anti-hero kills the villain in an absurd manner. There are also some gaps of logic-why didn't the bandits lock the sheriff in his jail? In any event, the film was such a financial success that the seven principal actors were reunited in The Return of Ringo (a sequel in name only, since all characters were different). This review of A Pistol for Ringo is based on the (poorly) English-dubbed home video version, titled Ballad of Death Valley. The video suffers greatly from lack of widescreen; for example, the first shootout has Ringo against four opponents at once, but all you can see on the TV screen is Ringo and one of the opponents, so you don't even know who drew first. If you want to see this film, try to see it in widescreen. written by bruce3

RFC 163 Misfits of WV Shirt
Radio Free Charleston marks six years as a web TV show with a fast-paced episode featuring music from Red Audio, Tofujitsu and Mother Blues, plus animation by Frank Panucci, and Cow Snatch.
Summersville, WV band, Red Audio was recorded during Charleston's FestivAll (at the Smoke on the Water Chili Cookoff), but we used a studio recording of the song, Girl From Outer Space, because it matched the live footage so well, and sounded so much better. As soon as I heard this song, I knew it was going to make it on our sixth anniversary show.
In the spirit of Red Audio's DEVO-like music, we chose as our animation this week The Making of the Fudge, the latest in Frank Panucci's series of CGI ruminations on DEVO Energy Domes.
Our next musical guests are Tofujitsu, Sean and Karen Allen Richardson. For this music video of their song Darjeeling, Sean and Karen teamed up with director, Eamon Hardiman, of Porkchop and Zombie Babies fame. Produced by Razor Sharp Studios.
We wrap up the show this week with a performance by Mother Blues, a new band that combines our old pals Johnny Compton, Keef Mack and Tommy Fontaine, from The Diablo Blues Band, with dynamic vocalist Lola Spencer and percussionist Richard Alderson. we recorded them on a very windy edition of Live On The Levee, performing a cover of Prince's Purple Rain.
Our host segments were shot in South Charleston, at Dutch Streetwear, on D Street. Dutch Streetwear was formerly known as The Salvage Yard in The Charleston Town Center, but in the new location they can stretch out and carry even more Kool Kar Kulture appareal and accessories. Many thanks to Walt Woods for letting us shoot indoors on a day when the thermometer reached triple digits.
Our title shirt this episode is Misfits of WV, designed by Dana White as a tribute to both the Mountain State and the legendary punk band.
