The city of Santa Fe was founded in 1610, and El San Miguel (St. Michael's) Mission Church was built between 1610 and and 1628. It is the oldest church still in use in the United States, this simple adobe structure was built by the Tlaxcalan Indians of Mexico, who came to New Mexico as servants of the Spanish. Badly damaged in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, the church vigas in the ceiling were burned, and in 1692 De Vargas ordered the church rebuilt.
In 1859 the church served as the chapel for the newly arrived Christian Brothers who took over control of St. Michael's School. In 1881 the Christian Brothers purchased the church, a recently completed school building, an adobe building and the land upon which they were situated from the Archdiocese of Santa Fe.
Since its creation, San Miguel has been used as a chapel and shrine to St. Michael, a military chapel, an oratory for the Christian Brothers, a school chapel and a barrio church. Today, in addition to being an historical treasure, cultural heritage and tourist attraction, it still serves as a shrine to St. Michael and a chapel where Mass is celebrated weekly
Some of the features of San Miquel Mission are:
Reredos - The reredos or altar screen dates from 1798 and is the oldest wooden reredos in New Mexico.
St. Michael the Archangel Statue - The carved gilded and painted wood statue of St. Michael the Archangel celebrates his victory over Satan and dates from at least 1709 when it was brought from Mexico. It occupies the center niche in the reredos.
The San Jose Bell - The bronze bell situated in the gift shop once hung in the bell tower. There is some speculation that it was cast in 1856 in the Parroquia in Santa Fe or in Cerrillos in 1836.

Parishoners come together to save historic church
a southern new mexico community is working against the clock-- trying to save a church that's been the heart of the community for centuries. san miguel church in soccoro is in danger of collapsing, and the community is trying to remodel it now. cristina rodda is joins us now to tell us what's being done to save this historic church, cristina? right now the san miguel church restoration is in a critical stage-- work crews are working to find out how much damage there is in the adobe walls. since san miguel is about 4--hundred years old-- it's a huge job but this work crew has some motivation. nat. nat. generations of san miguel church faithful-- are also faithful to the restoration of one of the country's oldest churches. i love this church this church is worth saving for the last four years i've come here and it seems fine now it comes down, that's not cool. we have lots of parishoners just here all in dirt, dust and trying to to cut into these walls to do the work that needs to be done to preserve this holy church. that speaks of a community of great faith. the nearby lemitar church-- like other adobe churches in the state collapsed. san miguel has not. in the city of socorro -- population about 8 thousand-- san miguel is the heart of the community. you see, many were baptized here, married here and their final services will be here too. there is no way this church is going down without all of us fighting for it. and that's why they're here-- for what is sure to be the just the beginning of a lot of months maybe even years of work-- to get the moisture out of the adobe walls so that they don't crumble. our hope is that we caught everything at a good time and we'll be able to do what we need to do to fix it and get back in here as quickly as we can. during previous restorations- concrete was used in the adobe walls and now it's that same concrete that is trapping the moisture. father andy pavlak says he would like to see this complete by 2015 when they celebrate their 400 hundredth anniversary as a faith community. back to you

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

The Socorro Mission In El Paso, Texas, by Dr. Yolanda Leyva
The Spanish established two Mission for Indians in 1680 that are now on El Paso's Mission Trail. One mission was made up of primarily Native Americans moved by the Spanish from the area in central New Mexico the Spanish called Socorro. So that also became the name of the mission that is now in Socorro, Texas. This history is explained by Dr. Yolanda Leyva, Chair of the History Dept. at the University of Texas at El Paso in a lecture recorded on September 7, 2013.

In the Footsteps of the Hermit - Larry Torres
The Hermit of La Cueva was a 19th-century mystic and healer who spent his final days in a cave at the base of the Organ Mountains, near what is now called Dripping Springs. Born in Italy as Giovanni María Agostini-Justiniani, he studied for the priesthood but stopped short of taking his vows. After leaving Europe, he spent much of his life wandering South and North America dispensing religious visions and herbal healing.
In Las Vegas, NM, where he lived for some time, local Penitente brothers calling themselves La Sociedad del Ermitaño still revere him by making rosaries out of native plants at Easter.
His gravestone in Mesilla reads, John Mary Justiniani, Hermit of the Old and New World. He died the 17th of April, 1869, at 69 years and 49 years a hermit.
Larry Torres, associate professor of foreign languages at UNM Taos, plays the role of the Hermit in these imagined scenes from the Hermits wanderings in New Mexico.

Travel Guide New Mexico tm San Antonio New Mexico
San Antonio at the junction of US 380 and one mile east of I-25 is the only one listed on the current New Mexico map. It is located ten miles south of Socorro and ten miles north of the Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge.
The post office was established in 1870, and is still in existence. The site of this village may date back as far as 1600. Two friars established a mission at the Piro Indian Pueblo, but after the Pueblo revolt of 1680, people left. Floods, pot hunting and recycling of materials makes it very difficult to establish exactly where the pueblo may have existed.
At about the time the post office was established, northern Hispanic settlers began to resettle there, and they kept the name San Antonio. These settlers raised grain, beans, chile, onions and grapes, and the Atcheson Topeka and the Santa Fe Railroad established a station there. The railroad was soon hauling alfalfa, wine, coal and coke. It was the advent of the railroad that ultimately gave the community its fame. Conrad Hiltons father arrived here in the 1880s and opened a store. He was later to become known as The merchant king of San Antonio, as he also established a stage line to White Oaks, a then-mining town eighty miles to the east. He and his wife opened their home as a hotel, and it was here that Conrad had his first hotel experience.
Today the Hilton family home, at Sixth and Main Street, is in ruins. The Owl Bar, a tourist stopover and meeting place for locals, contains the bar from the old Crystal Palace. The bar is listed on the State Historical and Cultural Properties . The old Crystal Palace still stands on Main Street but is not open to the public.
The coal, wine and crops are gone, but San Antonio, New Mexico, still exists.
