Owl Cafe - Tokyo, Japan (Harajuku)
The Owl Cafe is one of the coolest places to visit in Tokyo, Japan. Located in Harajuku. I seriously had such an amazing time. It's definitely a crazy and weird cafe to visit, but I highly recommend it.

Shibuya, Meiji Shrine, Harajuku, Owl Cafe, Fugu // Starving Artists Episode 8
Episode 8 of Starving Artists, filmed in Tokyo, Japan.
For Day 2 of our Japan trip, we hit Shibuya Crossing and see the famous Hachiko statue, then head along to the Meiji Shrine and have a bite to eat at Uobei Sushi Train and enjoyed Shisha at Northern Village. We take a stroll down Harajuku and hit an Owl Cafe, enjoy some Sake at a stand-up bar called Sake Station and finally eat a full course of Fugu (poisonous pufferfish) and live to tell the tale.

The Weirdest Cafes in Tokyo
While living in Tokyo, Japan I set out to explore the weirdest cafes in Tokyo including a cat cafe, owl cafe, hedgehog cafe and maid cafe.
For more Tokyo Cafes information visit
Cat Cafe - The most famous themed Tokyo Cafe has to be the Cat Cafe, and it did not disappoint. There were cats all over the two-floor Cat Cafe Mocha in Shibuya, and the unlimited vending machine refreshments added a nice touch to a fun Tokyo experience.
Owl Cafe - As you can see from the video, I had mixed emotions about the Owl Cafe in Tokyo. This one was called Owl Cafe and Bar Owl Village in Harajuku, and the owls just sat there while you learn about them. Tokyo Owl Cafes are growing in popularity, I just don't like seeing birds tied up.
Hedgehog Cafe - Harry Hedgehog Cafe was the quirkiest cafe we visited, and it was so cute to see all the hedgehogs around the cafe. There were babies, big guys, and so many to go around for everyone to hold and feed - this is probably my favorite themed Tokyo Cafe.
Maid Cafe - Maidreamin in Shibuya is something you have to do while visiting Tokyo. The maid cafe is so much different than anything I have ever experienced before, with Japanese women singing, dancing, and serving in maid costumes - you will never forget this one!
Luckily, there are many different maid cafes in Tokyo that you can visit.
What is your favorite themed Tokyo Cafe?

Japan Part 5: Yoyogi Park, Owl Cafe and the Best Jazz Bar EVER
On the 11th of April it rained again, and we got lazy and uncomfortable and stayed indoors - so we only walked 4.3km that day. Not even 10000 steps! On the 12th the sun was back, and even though I look really sick and tired, we managed 13.6km through Harajuku, back to Shibuya, around Akiba and Ochanomizu, then to Takadanobaba in the evening to visit Chris' favourite place in the world - Jazz Spot Intro, a tiny little jam-focussed jazz bar. Check out their website here:
The owl cafe we visited totally on a whim as we were walking through Takeshita St - it's half of an animal cafe that also has bengal cats, but we didn't visit the kitties since we'd already been to a cat cafe. While seeing the owls was enchanting, we weren't happy to see that they weren't given much room to stretch their legs from the way they were tied to their branches and some seemed a bit distressed and scared. I'd recommend putting more research into your owl cafe experience than we did so you can be certain you're supporting a business that puts their animals' health and happiness first.

Japanese STREET FOOD Tour of Asakusa - UNIQUE JAPANESE SWEETS | Tokyo, Japan
I have loved eating food from all over the world ever since I was a kid, so when I got the chance to visit Japan in January of 2019, I knew I would have an incredible time diving into all of the unique dishes this amazing country has to offer. I started my Japanese adventure in Tokyo and explored several other cities and areas around the island of Honshu on an unforgettable, 12-day excursion. Come with me as I explore the gorgeous island nation of Japan!

I love Asian sweets. They’re so different from Western sweets, and Japan has some of the most unique ones on the planet. My friend Shinichi from TabiEats was kind enough to take me on a phenomenal street food tour in Asakusa, Tokyo, where we explored the sugary world of Japanese sweets in the culinary capital of the world!
My Film Making Kit ►
The Asakusa area of Tokyo is known for its beautiful temples and delectable street food, so I knew I’d have a blast there! We started on the longest and oldest shopping street in Tokyo, Nakamise Dori, where you can find the oldest temple in the city, Sensoji Temple, as well as lots of shops. There’s a lot of history there!
At our first shop, Azuma, Shinichi and I tried kibi dango, which is a traditional Japanese sweet that consists of mochi balls covered in millet flour on a stick! It was gooey and was almost exactly like mochi, but with nothing inside it, and covered in a nutty flour that tastes similar to peanut butter. I loved it! Then I also tried a fantastic, hot, fermented rice drink called amazake. It was very rice-y and kind of slimy, but amazing! I’m glad I got to try it; it’s only available in the winter.
Next, I tried ichigo daifuku, a type of mochi that is stuffed with red bean paste and a fresh strawberry. We got two different varieties: one with red bean paste and one with custard. The one with the red bean paste was incredibly juicy and fresh, as it was strawberry season in Japan. One of my favorite mochis of all-time!
Next was the custard ichigo daifuku, which was very different. I didn’t love it at first, but then the custard inside blew me away!
Up next were freshly deep-fried rice crackers. They were hot, crunchy, and salty, and had a flavor almost like popcorn. I didn’t love them, but they were still pretty tasty.
We followed that with Japanese pancakes called ningyoyaki that date back to the Edo period. They come in shapes like pagodas and birds and contained red bean paste, which is standard for most traditional Japanese sweets. It was almost all gooey red bean paste with the savory pancake around it and is so good! Six cost 550 Yen, or roughly $4.97 U.S.
After visiting a mask shop with a cool selection, we moved on to menchi katsu, which is a deep-fried patty made of beef, pork, and onion. It was very moist and juicy and had a great mix of flavors and a nice, flaky crunch on the outside. It was amazing!
Afterward, I met an owl from an owl café and grabbed another coffee from a vending machine, before grabbing two savory, deep-fried pancakes called monja: a regular one and a curry one. Both were hot and moist, with lots of herbs, but the curry one had a crunchy, delicious curry on the outside. I loved it!
After passing through the second gate of the temple and warming my hands by a massive incense burner, we prepared to enter the temple by rinsing out hands and mouths in the water of the nearby fountain. Inside, I prayed, made a wish, and bowed. Afterward, you can get your fortune, but mine was bad, so Shinichi showed me what to do with fortunes you don’t like and want to change!
We finished our sweets tour with some melon pan, which is a Japanese sweet bread with matcha (a type of green tea) soft serve ice cream inside! The bread was amazing, like a biscuit with a little sugar on top, and an icy dose of intense matcha flavor in the middle. My number one dish of the day, even though it gave me brain freeze!
Wow, what a fantastic sweets tour! I hope you liked watching me and Shinichi sampling some of the best Japanese sweets in Tokyo! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave me a comment below. And please subscribe to my channel if you haven’t already. I will see you in the next travel food adventure!

Japan Trip 2012 Tokyo Ikebukuro Nightlife East Exit
Ikebukuro
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ikebukuro (池袋?) is a commercial and entertainment district in Toshima, Tokyo, Japan. Toshima ward offices, Ikebukuro station, and several shops, restaurants, and enormous department stores are located within city limits.
At the center of Ikebukuro is the train and subway station, a huge urban gathering shared by the JR East lines, the Seibu Ikebukuro Line and the Tōbu Tōjō Line. It is one of the main commuter hubs in the western Yamanote area of Tokyo. Ikebukuro Station is the second busiest station in Japan, second only to Shinjuku Station.
Around the station are the Seibu and Tōbu department stores. Seibu, written with the characters for West and Musashi (province) 西武, is on the east end of the station and Tōbu, written with the characters for East and Musashi 東武, is on the west end. East of the station, on the site of Sugamo Prison, stands Sunshine 60, which was Tokyo's tallest building at the time of its construction. Adjacent to Sunshine City, on Meiji-Dori is the Toyota Amlux Building which houses the Toyota showroom. Otome Road, a leading shopping area for otaku products aimed at women, is located nearby. Marui and Don Quijote also have department stores in the area. The principal electronics retailer in Ikebukuro is Bic Camera. There is a small pleasure district located in Nishi-Ikebukuro, similar to Shinjuku's Kabukichō.
The old village of Ikebukuro stood to the northwest of the station. Most of the area on which modern Ikebukuro is built was historically known as Sugamo. In the Taishō and Shōwa periods, the relatively low land prices attracted artists and foreign workers, who lent a somewhat cosmopolitan atmosphere to Ikebukuro. Until October 1, 1932 when Toshima ward was established, the area was an independent municipality of Ikebukuro-mura (池袋村).
The kanji for Ikebukuro literally means pond bag. Outside the west exit of Ikebukuro station near an entrance to the Fukutoshin Line is a small plaque explaining three origins of the name Ikebukuro. The first is that in the northeastern part of the village there was a lake shaped like someone holding a bag. The second is that there was once a large number of lakes in the area of various sizes (thus implying a bag full of lakes). The third is that long ago a turtle came out of the lake carrying a bag on its back.
There is a small statue of an owl located near the center of the city called Ikefukurō-zō (いけふくろう像), meaning lake owl statue. It is a play on words from the alternative meaning of fukuro as owl (although owl is pronounced with a long final oh, rather than a short o in the word fukuro for bag). The owl statue has become a famous meeting place along the lines of the statue of Hachikō located outside of Shibuya Station.
Education
Public elementary and junior high schools are operated by the Toshima Ward. Public high schools are operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Board of Education.
Crime and safety
The Kyokuto-kai designated yakuza syndicate is headquartered in Ikebukuro.
In popular culture
Ikebukuro is the setting of the Japanese manga and TV drama Ikebukuro West Gate Park. It is also the setting of the Japanese light novel series, anime, and manga, Durarara!!. Ikebukuro is also the name of a 16-minute long track from the Brian Eno album, The Shutov Assembly.
