The Saint George Palace is an historic building in the city of Rennes. Formerly an abbey residence, it was built in 1670 to replace a much older abbey building that stood on the same site. The Benedictine Abbey of Saint George (Abbaye Saint-Georges de Rennes) was forced to close in 1792 during the French Revolution and the property was seized by the government. Since 1930 the building has been listed as a monument historique of France.
Saint George Palace, at 2 rue Gambetta, is situated east of the city centre in the Thabor-Saint Hélier quarter of Rennes. The front garden and main façade face south and the building lies very near the north bank of the Vilaine river, and is within sight while travelling north along rue Jean Janvier. It is served by the Métro station République.
In 1032, Duke Alain III of Brittany founded the Benedictine abbey of Saint George on behalf of his sister Adèle, a Benedictine nun who became the convent's first abbess. The abbey thrived for several centuries. Magdelaine de la Fayette was the 38th abbess, holding this position from 1663 to 1688. In the 1660s she commissioned the architect Pierre Corbineau to design a new building. She oversaw the demolition of the main abbey building, and presided over the construction of the new Palais Saint-Georges, built by Corbineau and assisted by another architect from Laval, Tugal Caris. The first two stones were laid on 24 March 1670; one by Charles-François de La Vieuville, Bishop of Rennes, and the other by Magdelaine de la Fayette. The stones bore copper plates engraved with declarations in Latin.
The central feature of the building is its long gallery of nineteen two-storey windows and paired nineteen granite arches. The gallery is accessed by a large double staircase with substantial stone balustrade. At either end of the main gallery section are two pavilions in the same style. The mansard roof features twenty-three dormer windows and above the three central windows is a large semi-circular pediment surmounted by a stone cross. The pediment is sculpted with the arms of the abbey, flanked by figures of justice and peace.
The coat of arms of the abbess Magdelaine de la Fayette is present in relief on both end pavilions and in the centre of the building between the second- and third-storey windows. Her name is featured in the form of iron bars shaped as letters, bolted to the façade, and spaced evenly above the pier of each arch, as MAGDELAINEDLFAYETTE, with the double T joined above one pier.

Rennes is the capital of the region of Brittany and the capital of theR former Duchy of Brittany. Already the Romans and Celts settled here. Later Britons emigrated in Armorica, as the North West of Gaul was called. Afterwards, the Frankish Empire, the Vikings, the Normans and later the French king and the British embattled Brittany, until it was finally finally united with France, in 1532 .
In the 16th and 17th centuries, Rennes benefited from the overseas trade, cloth production and agriculture. In 1720, a large fire raged in the city and devastated it for the most part. In the 20th century, there were again independence movements, which were partly violent. During WW2, Rennes remained largely spared. In 1994, the old parliamentary buildings partly burned down and were rebuilt in 10-year construction time.
Our city walk starts at the church Saint-Aubin and leads through the Rue Saint Melaine to the church Notre-Dame-de-Saint-Melaine. Lovely half-timbered houses line the street.
Behind the church Notre-Dame is the Parc du Thabor, a botanical garden with rare plants and songbirds.
In the Rue Martenot we pass the headquarters of the Délégation Régionale Recherche Technologie and the Prefecture de Rennes.
In the Rue Saint Gorges we allowed ourselves a snack and take the Rue Gambetta to the Piscine Saint-Georges, the urban bath, and the Palais Saint Georges, originally a Benedictine Abbey. During the French Revolution it was the seat of government Today it is headquarters of the fire brigade and further municipal facilities.
The Place de la Republic is towered by the Palace de la Commerce, a hotel. Passing the Parliament of Brittany we reach the Place de la Mairie with the City Hall and the Opera House of Rennes.
Around the Place du Champ Jacquet you find beautiful half-timbered houses and picturesque shops. Even more picturesque is the district around the Rue de Renne. Half-timbered houses and street art provide plenty of subjects for photos.

Rennes ist die Hauptstadt der Region Bretagne und war die Hauptstadt des früheren Herzogtums Bretagne. Bereits die Römer und Kelten siedelten hier. Später wanderten Briten in Aremorica, wie sich der Nordwesten Galliens nannte, ein. Anschließend wurde die Bretagne immer wieder vom Fränkischen Reich, den Wikingern, den Normannen, danach vom französischen König und den Briten bedrängt, bis sie schließlich 1532 endgültig mit Frankreich vereint wurde.
Rennes profitierte im 16. und 17 Jahrhundert vom Überseehandel, der Tuchproduktion und der Landwirtschaft. 1720 wütete ein großes Feuer in der Stadt und verwüstete sie größtenteils. Im 20. Jahrhundert gab es wieder Unabhängigkeitsbestrebungen, die teilweise auch gewaltsam ausgetragen wurden. Im 2. Weltkrieg blieb Rennes größtenteils verschont. 1994 brannte das alte Parlamentsgebäude teilweise nieder und wurde in 10-jähriger Bauzeit wieder aufgebaut.
Unser Stadtrundgang beginnt bei der Kirche Saint-Aubin und führt durch die Rue Saint Melaine zur Kirche Notre-Dame-en-Saint-Melaine. Wunderschöne Fachwerkhäuser säumen die Straße.
Hinter der Kirche Notre-Dame schließt der Parc du Thabor, ein Botanischer Garten mit seltenen Pflanzen und Singvögeln an.
In der Rue de Marteno passieren wir den Sitz der Délégation Régionale Recherche Technologie und der Prefecture de Rennes.
Nachdem wir uns in der Rue Saint Gorges eine Imbiss gegönnt haben, kommen wir in der Rue Gambetta zur Piscine Saint-Georges, dem städtischen Bad und dem Palais Saint Georges, ursprünglich eine Bendiktiner Abtei und während er französischen Revolution Sitz der Regierung. Heute ist es Sitz der Feuerwehr und weiterer städtischer Einrichtungen.
Der Place de la Republic wird vom Palace de la Commerce, einem Hotel, überragt. Vorbei am Parlament der Bretagne erreichen wir den Place de la Mairie mit dem Rathaus und dem Opernhaus von Rennes.
Um den Place du Champ Jacquet sind wieder sehr schöne Fachwerkhäuser und pittoreske Geschäft zu finden. Noch malerischer wird es im Viertel um die Rue de Renne. Fachwerkhäuser und Streetart liefern jede Menge Motive.
