Bretagne Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Bretagne in France.
Brittany in the rugged west of France features picturesque old towns, castles and fortresses plus austere mediaeval cathedrals. Nostalgia and romantic harbour villages still exist here and it is also a land of menhirs and fishermen.Rennes is the capital of the region and it is here that our journey through Brittany begins. It is a small town in which both mediaeval and classical buildings stand side by side. In 1720 a disastrous fire that raged for seven days destroyed a number of historic houses. Several crooked, partly renovated frame-work houses are situated in the alleys of the old town, their carved windows and oriels create a medieval atmosphere. Thirty two kilometres south is Vitré, a picture postcard town with a city wall, narrow lanes and a castle. English troops besieged the town for many years until the lords of the castle finally paid a large ransom for their freedom. Le Mont Saint Michel with its historic buildings is located on an eighty metre high granite mound and is like something from a fairytale. Powerful fortifications surround the small town and the abbey at the top of the rock. Due to its unique location and architectural splendour this picturesque village is often referred to as the Wonder Of The Occident. Dinan is a small enchanting French town on the banks of the Rance is one of the most beautiful and well preserved mediaeval towns in Brittany. The western part of France has many faces and Brittany truly is a land of myths, castles, fishing villages and historic old towns.

Rennes is the capital city of Brittany, northwest France. It's known for its medieval half-timbered houses and grand Rennes Cathedral. Parc du Thabor includes a rose garden and aviary. South of the Vilaine river, the Musée des Beaux-arts displays works by Botticelli, Rubens and Picasso. Rennes is not often mentioned on tourist guides but this medium size town is well worth a visit. It has more than 200,000 inhabitants, of whom about 60,000 are students. This gives the town a vibrant nightlife. Some streets, such as the Rue Saint Michel, have only bars on both sides. (The locals actually call Rue Saint Michel la rue de la soif, which means Street of Thirst). A stroll down Rue Saint Michel on a Friday or Saturday evening is a very interesting experience indeed. However, if you're really in the mood to faire la fête, celebrate or just have fun in other words, the most exciting night on Rue de la Soif would be the Jeudi Soir, Thursday nights, during the school year. Jeudi Soir is the night when bars are most often packed to the brim with students. The sights on Thursday nights out on the town are very memorable and interesting.
Rennes is particularly nice in early July, during the Festival des Tombées de la Nuit. Its streets are then full of people enjoying the free street entertainment and eating or drinking at the terraces of the restaurants and cafés. Rennes used to be virtually empty after the 15th of July, as most of its inhabitants were migrating to the coast until the 15th August. In recent years, this trend seems to have stopped and Rennes's terraces and cafes are now bustling throughout the year.
One highlight of Rennes, if you're after natural beauty and tranquility, is the Thabor. This park has a stunning collection of plantlife, including a large bed of hundreds of species of roses, tropical, African and European trees, other beautiful and rare plants, and offers the traveller a chance to see some budgies. Alot else to see in Rennes such as :
Le Parlement

A Walk Around Rennes, France
I spent the weekend in the lovely city of Rennes. There is a lot to see architecutrally speaking, there is old French and old Bretagne all over the Old City Centre. There is a lively late night dining and tavern scene, plenty of French Street music, And much, much more. It is defiantly worth the effort to leave the Capital city of Paris and venture out in the country.
Rennes is a city in the east of Brittany in northwestern France. Rennes is the capital of the region of Brittany, as well as the Ille-et-Vilaine department. The city is the tenth largest in France, with a metropolitan area of about 700,000 inhabitants. With more than 63,000 students in 2013, is also the eighth-largest university campus of France.
Rennes is the administrative capital of the French department of Ille-et-Vilaine. Before the French revolution, prior to the integration of the Duchy of Brittany into the Kingdom of France, Rennes was the capital of the duchy, with the other historical capitals of Brittany's Ducal period being Nantes and Vannes. It has a long history due to its location at the confluence of two rivers and its proximity to the bordering regions from which arose various challenges to the borders of Brittany.

Enjoy strolling around one of France's most beautiful parks. As you explore the wonders of the Thabor gardens, you'll be drawn to the romantic, elegant atmosphere. Here even L'Enfer – which means hell in French – is a delightful open-air theatre venue. The former garden of the monks of Saint-Melaine Benedictine Abbey was redesigned by Denis Bühler, a famous 19th-century landscape artist. Spanning 10 hectares, it boasts French-style gardens, an English-style park, a cave, bandstand, aviary and an impressive rose garden featuring over 2,000 varieties!
The Tabor Park , located in Rennes near the city center, is a public park built on over ten hectares whose characteristic is to mix a French garden , an English garden and a large botanical garden . Its name refers to a mountain overlooking Tiberias' lake in Israel , Mount Thabor .
Since its private origin, vegetable garden and amenity of the monks of Saint-Melaine , abbey long outside the walls of the city, the park became, by successive developments and enlargements, one of the emblematic places of the city and the more appreciated. Simple public promenade before the Revolution, enriched by a botanical garden , the park is enhanced between 1866 and 1868 by the contributions of Denis Bühler by setting up various points in bowling , hell, French gardens and English gardens . At the beginning of xx th century, the southern part of the park, called the Catherinettes, is arranged in extension of the English garden.
The Tabor Park is ranked prestigious garden type 1 by the city of Rennes , he has considerable maintenance to meet the requirements of a very structured garden floral decoration elaborate and varied in species used seasonally and and the expectations of regulars and tourists alike.
