Palazzi dei Rolli in Genoa - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The UNESCO World Heritage site of the Palazzi dei Rolli system in Genoa (Genova) is a very unique and distinct system. Started by wealthy merchants from the northern Italian port city, it was a series of palaces built along the New Street or Strade Nuovo in the 16th and 17th centuries. These palaces were added to a roll, or Rolli, and would be used by visiting dignitaries and businessmen. The grandest and most impressive palaces were reserved for emperors, Popes and kings, while more modest accommodation was reserved for traders, diplomats and merchants.
Many of these palaces are still in use by banks and white collar businesses, and the port is still very busy as well. Genoa is a lively city, and the ancient port town area has a very active and medieval feel to it.

Genoa: Le Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which includes a number of streets and palaces in the center of Genoa, in Northwestern Italy.
- The Strade Nuove (Italian for New Streets) are a group of streets built by the Genoese aristocracy during the expansion of the city at a time when the Republic of Genoa was at the height of its financial and seafaring power. These are Via Giuseppe Garibaldi (1558-1583, formerly Strada Maggiore or Strada Nuova) and Via Balbi (1602-1620, formerly Strada Balbi), later followed by Via Cairoli (1778-1786, formerly Strada Nuovissima).
- The Palazzi dei Rolli (Italian for Palaces of the Lists) are a group of palaces - most of which also date from the late 16th and early 17th centuries - which were associated to a particular system of ‘public lodging’ in private residences, whereby notable guests on State visit to the Republic were hosted in one of these palaces on behalf of the State.
The Rolli di Genova - or, more precisely, the Rolli degli alloggiamenti pubblici di Genova (Italian for Lists of the public lodgings of Genoa) were the official lists at the time of the Republic of Genoa of the private palaces and mansions, belonging to the most distinguished Genoese families, which - if chosen through a public lottery - were obliged to host on behalf of the Government the most notable visitors during their State visit to the Republic.
The site represents the first example in Europe of an urban development project parcelled out by a public authority within a unitary framework and associated to a particular system of ‘public lodging’ in private residences, as decreed by the Senate in 1576. The site includes an ensemble of Renaissance and Baroque palaces along the so-called ‘new streets’ (Strade Nuove).
On July 13, 2006, forty-two of the 163 palaces originally included in one the five public list called Rolli (Italian for lists) were selected as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.
Some of the Palazzi dei Rolli are used today as public buildings, museums, offices and private residences. Among the palaces open to the public, Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Doria Tursi jointly constitute the Strada Nuova Museums located in via Garibaldi.

Da alcuni anni i genovesi hanno ritrovato con estremo interesse la ricchezza e il valore memoriale di Strada Nuova e dei palazzi dei rolli: un eccezionale sistema monumentale iscritto nella lista del patrimonio dell'Umanità (World Heritage List).
Con la ristrutturazione delle mura trecentesche (1536-1553) iniziano a Genova il rinnovo del paesaggio urbano e la nascita di un sistema di dimore eccellenti, distribuito su pochi assi perpendicolari alla Ripa, che nel corso delle trasformazioni urbanistiche ha saputo mantenere la coesione con la città vecchia, offrendoci lo spirito del secolo con immutata capacità evocativa. The historic center of Genoa is the core of the old town organized in the maze of narrow streets (alleyways) of medieval origin that develops - from east to west - from the hills of Carignano in Genoa Piazza Principe railway station, close to what was Prince's Palace, the residence of Admiral Andrea Doria. Urbanistically the area is now part of The Hall Center-East.
Given the scale of the original nucleus - 1.13 km2, which is 113 hectares, is sometimes considered the most extensive ancient center of Europe. In reality this can be considered an urban legend, since it is less extensive, for example, the historic center of Venice, Naples [1] and Rome (the latter with its 1,430 acres is twelve times higher) [2]. The high density of buildings, especially after the huge growth in construction began with the eighteenth century, however, makes it one of the old towns with the highest population density.
In the area there are about 20,000 inhabitants, divided into about 5000 buildings. [1] [3]

Genoa is the capital of the Italian region of Liguria and the sixth-largest city in Italy.
Located on the Gulf of Genoa in the Ligurian Sea, Genoa has historically been one of the most important ports on the Mediterranean: it is currently the busiest in Italy and in the Mediterranean Sea and twelfth-busiest in the European Union.

Notable to the city are the Palazzi dei Rolli, included in UNESCO World Heritage Site Genoa: Le Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli. The world-famous Strade Nuove are via Garibaldi (Strada Nuova), via Cairoli (Strada Nuovissima) and via Balbi (Strada Balbi).
Among the most important palaces are the Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco, Palazzo Podesta o di Nicolosio Lomellino, Palazzo Reale, Palazzo Angelo Giovanni Spinola, Palazzo Pietro Spinola di San Luca and Palazzo Spinola di Pellicceria.

Palazzo della Meridiana - Rolli - Genova
Il palazzo Gerolamo Grimaldi - conosciuto anche come palazzo della Meridiana fu fatto costruire tra il 1536 e il 1544 da Gerolamo Grimaldi in una zona poco urbanizzata e di notevole pendenza, con accesso e fronte principale sulla salita di San Francesco di Castelletto, oltre a due prospetti laterali affacciati su giardini a monte e a valle, molto lodati dall'architetto Joseph Furttenbach.
Sotto la committenza di Giovanni Battista Grimaldi gli affreschi della facciata più alta con le Fatiche di Ercole sono stati attribuiti ad Aurelio Busso, mentre, fuori e dentro, si sono anche letti contributi decorativi di Gio Batta Castello databili tra il 1556 e il 1566. Una quadratura più propriamente architettonica, di cui rimangono poche tracce e un'illustrazione rubensiana, decorava la facciata dell'ingresso attuale
