Macau Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go
10 things YOU need to know before you go to Macau. A comprehensive travel guide to bring you up to speed on the Language, Food, Casinos, and more! First, some basic knowledge on Macau: Macau was a Colony of Portugal from 1557-1999, and now it’s a Special Administrative Region of China just like Hong Kong. Macau is small -- 30 sq km, or 11 sq miles. 640,000 people live there. In 2017 Macau had 30 million visitors… lots of people for such a tiny place. 64km (40 miles) west of Hong Kong. A great day trip from Hong Kong, but easily worth 2 nights
Macau is best known as a gambling and shopping mecca, but it also has a really neat historic portuguese center
Macau is the only place in China where you can gamble legally. It generates more revenue from gambling than anywhere else on the earth including more than about seven times the revenue generated by “The Strip” in La Vegas
4 main parts…
the main part of Macau with the historic Portuguese core. This is called the Macau Peninsula
Taipa
Cotai Strip
Colane
2. Getting In
Ferry from Hong Kong
Takes 40-60 Minutes
2 different operators
Turbojet: The Red One
Cotai Water Jet: The Blue One
4 Ferry Terminal in Hong Kong
2 Ferry Terminals in Macau -
If you’re going to the Cotai Strip, most convenient to take Cotai Water Jet
Going to the Historic Portuguese section, take Turbojet
Macau does have it’s own airport, but not many flights
There’s a new bridge from HKG to Macau, you can take a bus on it
Or cross the border by land from China.
4. Unlucky
This number omitted because it’s unlucky. 4 in Chinese sounds like the word for “Death.” Most buildings typically omit this floor.
5. Getting Around
Free Shuttle Service
Macau’s hotels offer free shuttle service from the airport, ferry terminals, and border gates.
· The Venetian Macao Free Shuttle Schedule
· The Parisian Macao Free Shuttle Schedule
· Sands Cotai Central Free Shuttle Schedule
Bus
Public buses operate frequently throughout Macau, Taipa, and Coloane. Buses have onboard stop notifications in Mandarin, Cantonese, Portuguese and English.
· Price: Within Macau or Taipa: MOP3.2, Macau-Taipa: MOP4.2, Macau-Coloane: MOP5, Airport service: MOP4.2.
Taxi
Macau’s taxis come in two color schemes: one is yellow, the other is black and cream. Both color taxis charge the same fees. Taxis stands are located near hotel lobbies.
Tips:
·Base price (first 1.6 km): MOP17, additional MOP2 for each 260 m afterwards.
Extra fees: Taxi waiting fee is MOP2 for every minute. Taxis have a MOP3 luggage storing fee. There is a MOP2 fee from Taipa to Coloane, and a MOP5 fee from Macau to Coloane. There is an MOP5 fee for taxi trips to and from the airport.
Uber operates in Macau
6. Money
Macanese Pataca (MOP)
Most shops and restaurants will accept HKG to pay, with a 1:1 exchange rate to MOP
The exchange rate is fixed at HK$1 = MOP$1.03
But you’ll typically get change back in MOP
7. Language
Portuguese (but its own dialect)
And Chinese (Cantonese)
A little less english than Hong Kong, but enough to get by
8. Shopping
In every hotel on the Cotai Strip
9. The rest of Macau outside the Casinos and Historic Districts
10. Food:
Macanese cuisine’ is a mix of southern Chinese and Portuguese ingredients and cooking techniques. With a history dating back over 400 years, the cuisine is often regarded as the world’s first fusion cuisine.
Egg Tart that is so popular in Dim Sum restaurants originated here.. Lord Stows cafe is the original located in Taipa. Most convenient location is the one in the Venetian
Bifanas - Thin breaded pork Sandwich
Really good high end Chinese food cheaper than Hong Kong. The Wynn hotel has some really good options.

Hong Kong Macau Trip - Full - May 24-31, 2018
8-day tour to Hong Kong and Macau
8-day city tour to Hong Kong and Macau to celebrate our AbaraPanganay's (our own way saying of eldest daughter) 9th Birthday.
Myself, MyWifey, Yannon, Aali and MamaBabes flew to Hong Kong from Singapore and on the same day, Mamita, Toto and Roma travelled from Manila to Hong Kong International Airport as well.
By around 10:30AM we met somewhere around the Immigration area and the journey starts from there.
Our 1st mission was to buy the Octopus Cards so we can get traction rolling. Taken the Airport Express to TST (Tsim Sha Tsui) and to recuperate we had our 1st decent meal at Cafe de Coral in ChungKing Mansions (Our Crib for 8 days).
Then, we went for a short night walk to TST area till we reach Kowloon Park.
The next day we went to Rosary Church, HongKong History and Science Museums, and then travelled to Lantau Island to meet BIG BUDDHA via Ngong Ping 360 Crystal Cable Car.
On the 3rd day, the whole day was only dedicated to Disneyland Hong Kong. We met Mommy Cherryl and Bianca at Disneyland Light MTR entrance. Unfortunately, we've underestimated the scorching sun cum humidity of Hong Kong's daytime. So, we had lots of stopovers just to cool down a bit and slowly but surely we finished about 75% of its rides and attractions (we will back soon to settle that remaining 25% though).
4th day was Yannon's 9th Birthday (27/05/2018) so we had our Hong Kong's Sunday Mass at Rosary Catholic Church. Soon after, went to Nan Lian Gardens and Wong Tai Sin Temple for some Fortune Telling with Ate Jacky and the rest of the gang.
Monday our 5th day is for Victoria Peak Tram ride and Star Ferry experience. From Central Ferry Terminal we cross the sea for about 10 minutes and reach the opposite side TST Ferry Terminal and headed back to Chung Mansions.
6th day, Mommy Cherryl and Biancahave specially taken offs from their work and school respectively with Phil. They meet us up somewhere at Mong Kok area for a quick lunch (finally meet Phil after 8years). Phil sent us to Ladies Market for some Bugis type of Shopping experience (similar to Singapore). Then he had to rush back to his work (soccer class) and night time we went out to see the Symphony of Light in East TST area.
Last day, is whole lotta lovin' trip to Macau whereby we set sail via Cotai Water Jet (45minute sail to Macau Ferry terminal). Upon reaching Macau Ferry Terminal we grabbed some bite and surprisingly the serving from that Macanese food court was humongous and enough to feed the need of 2pax per serving. Taken, the shuttle bus to Venetian Hotel and has a quick Mall tour and went to Parisian Hotel to take another shuttle bus going to Jackie Chan's Grand Emperor Hotel. From there we saw the 999 Gold Bar literally lying on its entrance. From there we walked towards Senado Square to try the famous Porkchop Bun. And shortly we've traced the path leading to St Paul's Ruins. Rested for awhile, took some selfies and walked to Grand Lisboa and MGM Grand hotel to find that shuttle bus that goes back to Macau Ferry Terminal.
On the 8th day, early morning we're all set to be back to reality, 5 of us going back to SG and the 3 of them to Manila.
Twas tiring and sweaty but most importantly fun experience to be with THE FAMILY.
Look forward for another adventure soon, could be Japan / South Korea / Taiwan / Beijing or maybe ITALY.. See y'all soon on our next adventure. PeaceOut. #HotrebOut

Coloane Alto - Highest Point in Macau (China) - 172 metres (564 feet)
Macau (also spelled Macao) is one of the two Special Administrative Regions of the People's Republic of China, the other being Hong Kong (I have videos from there, too...). Macau lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta across from Hong Kong, which is about 64 kilometers to the east, and it is also bordered by Guangdong Province to the north and the South China Sea to the east and south. With a population of over 600,000 living in an area of 31.3 km2 (12.1 sq mi, or less than one-sixth the size of Washington, DC ), Macau is the most densely populated region in the world.
At 172 metres (564 feet) Coloane Alto is the highest point in Macau.

Ruins of the church of st paul in Macau, China
The Ruins of St. Paul's (Chinese: 大三巴牌坊; pinyin: Dàsānbā Páifāng) are the ruins of a 16th-century complex in Macau including what was originally St. Paul's College and the Church of St. Paul also known as Mater Dei, a 17th-century Portuguese church dedicated to Saint Paul the Apostle. Today, the ruins are one of Macau's best known landmarks. They are often, but incorrectly, mentioned as a former cathedral (see Macau Cathedral), a status they never had. In 2005, they were officially listed as part of the Historic Centre of Macau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
