Working to keep Orange County parks clean
ORANGE COUNTY - by Lauren Huet
On a nice summer day, you can find many parents and kids out at the local park. The Orange County Parks Director says taxpayers deserve clean parks, and the parks department has been working understaffed to keep them that way. Monday, county commissioners approved hiring some extra help.
Parents out enjoying the sunshine say it's good to get the kids outside.
Sure, get outside and run off some of that energy they have built up, said Michelle Powell, who is visiting the park with her kids and sister.
Running off energy at Claiborne West Park in Vidor. It's one of several parks in the community. Orange County Parks Director Donna Scales says the parks department only has two full time employees to take care of four parks. They need to hire two part-time employees to help keep the restrooms clean, help take care of the grounds, and take out the trash.
And of course you know where they crab, they use the chicken, and where that's thrown into the [trash] cans you have the result of that in the heat, said Scales. And it was things like that where we felt like it was a public safety deal, public health concern.
Scales says in light of the county's budget deficit the commissioners court asked county department heads to avoid filling vacancies to save money. In April, when two part time employees left, she tried to make it work without replacing the employees.
We certainly did heed that notice and try our very best not to, said Scales. We changed hours, we changed mowing schedules, we did everything we could possibly do.
However, she says the workload is too much.
Needless to say, a lot suffered during those three months and those employees they worked from can to can't, said Scales. It's not a reflection on them it's a reflection on the workload.
Monday, commissioners approved replacing the two part time employees. County Commissioner Jody Crump says it won't cost taxpayers extra money.
It's a dollar for dollar exchange because that's already inside Miss Scales' budget. She watches her budget very close. I'm glad she maintans her budget, she's always been really good about that, said Crump.
We appreciate the court, said Scales. What they do for the park is awesome. We could not ask for any better than what they do for us.
Park-goers say they're glad the parks department is hiring some help.
I think that would be really great, said Danni Sheard. For one people need jobs, for two who wants to come to a park if the restrooms aren't clean and nasty? I'd wait until I got home.
Sure, I think it's a wonderful idea, said Michelle Powell. It's such a beautiful park and to keep it clean is a good idea.
Scales says by waiting until now to fill the positions, the parks department saved taxpayers' money. As a result of that and other money saving efforts, she plans to give back about ten thousand dollars of her budget to the county.

About Peter's Canyon Regional Park (from Wikipedia)
Peters Canyon Regional Park is a regional park within the Orange County Regional Parks System. The park contains 354 acres of southern California wildlife, including costal sage shrub, riparian, freshwater marsh, and grasslands, and is located within the boundaries of both Orange, California and Tustin, California. Peters Canyon was given to this city in 1992 by the Irvine Company who had used it previously for cattle grazing. The canyon is lined with a residential area on one side and open hills on the other. This canyon is commonly used by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians because of the trails that circumvent the 50 acre man-made lake, which was constructed by the Irvine Company in 1931, on the interior of the plot. The regional park is open from 7:00 AM to sunset every day of the week, save for the chance of rain or hazardous conditions, in which case the park will be closed for three days following the particular occurrence.

Featherly Regional Park - Wcities
The Featherly Regional Park is only a recent addition to the number of parks in Orange County. The park covers a major portion of Santa Ana Canyon with limited access and viewing options from Santa Ana River Bikeway. In the wilderness, the Canyon R.V. Park, a privately operated park, is an area where camping facilities and cabins are available. Group events and camping is possible at this sight.
