Between Udon Thani & Non Khai in North-East Thailand the landscape rises to form the forest covered Phu Phan Mountains.
In 1991, the Thailand Fine Arts Department established this as a park, known as the Phu Phra Bat Historical Park.
Here, massive boulders, precariously balanced rocks and escarpments form a backdrop for prehistoric art and Buddhist shrines.
The rocks are believed to have come about as a result of glacial action over 15 million years ago. The mountain ridge to the north offers fine view over Isaan towards the blue mountains of Laos.
I have come here, in the main, to see the rock paintings. Two fine examples still exist in sheltered overhangs that have protected the art from the ravages of time and the elements. One is of oxen, the other containing human figures, both believed to be around 6000 years old.........

อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ภูพระบาท ตั้งอยู่บริเวณเชิงจังหวัดอุดรธานี ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ 3,430 ไร่ ในเขตป่าสงวนแห่งชาติที่มีชื่อว่า “ป่าเขือน้ำ” บ้านติ้ว ตำบลอุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ภูพระบาท ตั้งอยู่บริเวณเชิงเขาภูพาน ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ 3,430 ไร่ ในเขตป่าสงวนแห่งชาติที่มีชื่อว่า “ป่าเขือน้ำ” บ้านติ้ว ตำบลเมืองพาน อำเภอบ้านผือ จังหวัดอุดรธานี อยู่ห่างจากตัวจังหวัดระยะทางประมาณ 67 กม. อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ภูพระบาทเปิดบริการเวลา 08.00-16.30 น. อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ภูพระบาทแห่งนี้ ปรากฏร่องรอยของกิจกรรมของมนุษย์มาตั้งแต่สมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ เมื่อราว 2,000 – 3,000 ปีมาแล้ว มีการพบภาพเขียนสีมากกว่า 30 แห่ง ยังพบการดัดแปลงโขดหินและเพิงผาธรรมชาติให้กลายเป็นศาสนสถานของผู้คนใน วัฒนธรรมทวารวดี ลพบุรี สืบต่อกันมาจนถึงวัฒนธรรมล้านช้าง ตามลำดับ
Festival at Phu Phra Bat Historical Park Udon Thani
Phu Phra Bat Historical Park held an exhibition/festival from 13-15 November 2009 to celebrate the park becoming a World Heritage site very soon.

An exciting trip to the Forest Park. There you will find remains of an ancient civilization that used to reside there. You’ll also find some pre- historic drawings on some of the rock structures. There are also some natural rock formations as you ascend the mountain.

If you visit Phu Phra Bat Historical Park and have a little time to spare why not stop at the waterfall en-route, 5kms before you reach the park entrance. Its on the main road and marked by a small sign so be careful you don't miss it. Beware the road leading to the waterfall trail is very rocky, so if youre in a car we recommend leaving the car at the entrance and walk. However a truck should be able to navigate it fine.
The waterfall is only small, however its a pleasant spot to relax and listen to the sound of moving water and wildlife. There is also a small rock pool which is suitable for cooling off in and great for children to play. The water is clean and the area is generally well kept except when the children leave their litter behind. Luckily there are park rangers to help clean things up. If you make your way down stream you will see small fish swimming in the rock pools.
We recommend visiting Mon-Fri because the place can get busy with children on the weekends and school holidays. Also its best to visit during the rain season when there is plenty of water. There are no shops in the area so take some water with you and food if you wish. Don't forget a hat and sun cream!

In 2016 I landed in Thailand after 5mths in India, for a rest, well I was far to intrigued with the natural beauty of Thailand to stand still and Phu Phra Bat Park was one of my favourite first visits to the North East of Thailand. I hope you enjoy it too and venture far enough up North to visit!
Phu Phra Bat historical park in Udon Thani province in the North East of Thailand is a forested hill with natural rock formations shaped as caves with large rocky overhangs. The caves were used by ancient man as shelter and as temples where Buddha images were enshrined.
What makes this site unique, is that it contains traces of several different civilizations and cultures spanning thousands of years. The hill contains traces of prehistoric man, the Dvaravati period and Khmer presence.
The sandstone rock on top of the hill has been cut out during many centuries by glacier movement, wind and rain. Some of the rock formations provide natural shelter, others were carved into by man thousands of years ago creating cave like structures. Many of the rock formations harbour ancient Buddha images and served as ancient wats (Buddhist temples).
A number of walking trails have been been made through the park and there are a number of view points, from where visitors will have great scenic views of the surrounding area. Phu Phra Bat is set in a beautiful, natural and relaxing environment.

Udon Thani // Phu Phra Bat Park
We jumped in the Tuk Tuk in Vientiane, headed back across Friendship Bridge with a fresh Thai visa, and had our next day free to explore Udon Thani. Our first stop was Nong Prajak Park, home of the infamous 3 floating ducks. We monkeyed around on the playground for a bit until a huge storm started rolling in. We made a split second decision to book it to Phu Phra Bat Park and leave the storm clouds behind for an afternoon wandering amongst strange rock structures with Buddhist shrines.
