Thailande Phuket Heroines Monument

Kathu Tin Mining Museum is an important and magnificent place of Phuket, where people can come for a visit and learn about Phuket's historical mining.
Kathu Mining Museum is located on Kathu district area, near Loch Palm golf course on the Kathu - Ko Kaeo road, in Phuket. The museum was established in 1999 but became tangible in 2006 and was then finished in 2008. The museum building was designed with Shino Portuguese style buildings with a large courtyard in the middle and windows decorated with stucco designs and old style arches.
Valuables and heritage remaining from the past are being displayed inside a room called the Secret Pearl of Andaman'. Collections of jewelry such as Blue Sapphire, Topaz and precious stones, beads, jades and ancient combs made from Jamree or bull horns, coins and money from the past, are also on display such as 'Deebuk' coins, and Thai plus other currencies.
Exhibitions of various types of mines are another important part of the museum. This part is called 'Mining Life', showing different types of mine techniques such as Ground Sluicing a technique used for residual deposit sites or hillsides using human power; and
Hydraulic Mining type which is an open pit mining technique and also a significantly cheaper to operate;
plus 'Openeast or open-cut mining' which was a surface mining technique used for placer deposits located in the nearby hillsides;
'gravel pumping' or opened pit mining operated by injecting water to break the surface soil;
and 'dredging' which was a mining operation suitable for a big deposit that has been surveyed for its abundant supply.
The 'Tin Processing' room plays an important part in giving students a feel of the old mining era and is also a laboratory room to teach kids about the processing of tin industrialization. Other than tin mining and development of the process, the exhibition rooms such as 'the journey of Chinese merchants' illustrating Chinese people immigrating to find good hope in Phuket island. They sailed and lived their lives while traveling for many days, months or years on the boat.
Another show-stopping exhibition room is 'the legend of old city in Kathu'
showing Chinese operas, shadow plays, boutiques, old Chinese style pharmacies and Kathu peoples old style houses, presenting the Chinese way of life and their culture back in the old days.
Wax models of Ba-Ba Hokkien or mixed Thai Chinese families present traditional weddings in houses and paintings of the old days on the walls create a unique and ancient feel to this museum.
Arunrath Sinpetch, a technocrat/curator, of Kathu Mining Museum talked to Andaman News about the interesting aspects and how it is different from other museums:
The approximate number of visitors is not less than 200,000 people per year even though the museum is not fully operating yet. This place is a long life education resource. It is a learning institute of Phuket where people come in to learn more about historical mining. Tourists from Phuket and other provinces were also paying a visit to the museum.
Our museum is called a live museum, where tourists, students and visitors can participate while having a tour inside the museum. This museum is very different from other museums; we are showing the real side of science and demonstrations. I strongly believe that tourists or students will definitely learn important information from our museum.
The museum not only shows how historical Phuket's mining has developed and faded away but also illustrates the traditional lifestyle of Thai and Chinese people back in the old times and reminds us all that culture and custom are not easily forgotten by the Phuket people. Thai Hua Museum Highlights
The Thai Hua Museum features a charming inner courtyard, which is open to the sky. It is considered one of the highlights of this type of Sino-Portuguese structure as the courtyard helps air the house, especially during summertime. It also has a lovely garden that exhibits large and heavy tools and machines from Phuket’s tin-mining years.
There are more than a dozen interesting exhibition rooms and short films in Thai and Chinese with English subtitles on both floors of the museum. Overall, the Museum does well in explaining Phuket’s history through many different angles with explanations about the Phuket-China connection, Thai Hua as the first Chinese-language school in Phuket, the Sino-Portuguese buildings on the island and Phuket’s traditional ceremonies, as well as its local cuisine.
Almost all of the Phuket Chinese left their homeland because of poverty and the majority came from Fujian Province towns such as Fuzhou and Xiamen. And because Phuket is a relatively small island, it’s easy to find out where exactly where the well known and influential Phuket families with Chinese backgrounds migrated from. Visitors will be able to see just that in one of the display rooms.
Among notable local migrant families are the Aikwanich who own Diamond Cliff Resort & Spa in Patong and Cheraim Spa Village across the road from Central Festival Shopping Mall and the Hongsyok clan who own Phuket Country Club Golf Course in Kathu.

Wall Of Death Phuket
At the Heroine Monument Fair in Phuket there was a Wall Of Death, and it cost 40 baht to get in. It was rickety as, which made it even more awesome. I honestly thought that the guy had parked his car in there because it was easier than trying to find a space outside...

Special Thalang historical tour
Intro: During the cultural festival to commemorate the great deed of Thao thep Kasartri-Thao Sri-Sunthorn, the authorities arrange tour on historical route for residents, to learn about the united action of the ancestors to defend the home land from invaders. We joined the significant tour on Monday March 8th.
We boarded a bus at the Phuket provincial Hall for a tour of historical sites in Talang district, on the north side of the island. The participants, a mix of young people and adults alike, signed up for the tour as part of a program initiated by the Phuket Provincial Authority, aimed at educating the public about the historical value of these sites.
The first stop on our itinerary was Wat Phra Nang Sang temple located on Thepkasartri road the main road leading towards the airport. This temple played a key role in the battle against the invading Burmese in 1785 as the meeting place for Thalang villagers to plan the strategy of the attack which eventually led to victory for Phuket. We learned here that this temple is the islands oldest monastery, constructed approximately 250 years ago. Situated in the temple courtyard is a 225 year old chapel. It houses big statues made of tin. They are referred to as Monks in the Belly or the Three Kings. Despite having lived in Phuket for so many years, this was the first time many of us had entered this temple.
Participant *** voice *** This young participant said
I find Phuket history is very interesting. Many locals may not even know the real story behind many of these sites. The younger generation should be educated about the historical background of our homeland. We should be aware about people who gave their lives to protect our homeland so that we can live happily today.
Thawichart Intornrit / Phuket provincial Cultural Office chief said
We would like the local people to understand about the provinces history. This is the main aim of the historical tour programs.
From Wat Phra Nang Sang temple, the tour bus took us to another famous site, Wat Phra Thong temple in Talang. It was built toward the end of Ayudhaya period. Visitors to this temple will be amazed by the image of Buddha which is half buried and emerges from the floor of temple. Legend tells that during the siege of Talang, Burmese troops attempted to dig up the image to take back with them, but a swarm of bees attacked them, preventing it from being removed from the ground. Years later, a pilgrimage was undertaken by local villagers to protect the holy statue from being stolen. This they accomplished by building a temple to preserve the sacred treasure. They named the statue 'Phra Pud' which means to emerge from the ground. The name Phra Thong temple was given by HM King Rama the sixth who visited Phra Pud Temple when he was a crown prince. The temple today is a centre of faith for residents and Buddhist pilgrims as well as those who are interested in local culture and history.
The tour didnt end here as participants continued on and visited many historical locations in Thalang including the old home of Thao Thep Kasartri and Thao Srisunthorn, the Thalang Victory memorial and the Thalang national museum located near the Heroines monument.
Terayut Aiumtrakul / Phuket vice governor commented
Im personally keen on history. As for my duty, the historical background, culture and local life style are to be listed in the provincial development plan.
Ajaan Sommai Pinbhudhasilp / local historian expressed:
At least the tour helps participants to understand more about the brave deeds of the two heroines-Thao Thep Kasartri and Thao Srisunthorn and our ancestors who were prepared to sacrifice their lives to protect the homeland. We live comfortably today, yet we should at least respect that our ancestors have worked so hard and gave their lives to save this country. It should stimulate a bond of unity among people of this generation. We may adhere to different beliefs, but we should still live together in peace.
The tour is part of the Two Heroines Fair, an activity held annually in honor of the two sisters, who 225 years ago, bravely led villagers to protect their homeland from being invaded by the Burmese. The local governments aim is to educate the younger generation about Phukets history so that they understand and value the significance of unity and working together.
