Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Park in HD - Munising Michigan: a Video Tour
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a U.S. National Park following the shore of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. It consists of 42 miles (67 km) of lakeshore and covers 73,236 acres (114 sq mi; 296 km2). The park is littered with incredible scenery of the sandstone cliffs, rock formations, sandy beaches and natural archways between Munising and Grand Marais (both in Michigan).
Pictured Rocks got its name from the area northeast of Munising where red sandstone cliffs tower up to 200 feet above the Lake Superior's water level. The constant crashing of waves has carved the soft sandstone into incredible shapes, caves and formations over thousands of years. If you are driving through the Upper Peninsula be sure to check them out!

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore: A Driving Tour
This drive explores part of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The video shows most of my day at Pictured Rocks, and hits several trailheads, although most of the best views are not visible from the road. At the end, I stopped for pasties in Munising.
MyDrivelapse.com and Takemytrip.com provide driving videos and stories to help you plan your trip. Check out hundreds of videos on my YouTube channel. Subscribe if you like it! Dozens of new videos are on the way in the coming weeks.
I made this trip in October 2017. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore - Munising, Michigan
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore preserves a section of Lake Superior's lakeshore between Grand Marais and Munising, Michigan. Along this section of the lakeshore, colorful sandstone cliffs rise as much as 200 feet above the water. Rock arches and sea caves can be found along the water's edge.
The cliffs are part of the Pictured Rocks escarpment, the result of geological tilting that raised an edge of the sandstone, creating the cliff face, i.e., the escarpment slope. Where the escarpment runs inland, waterfalls are common. These include Munising and Miners Falls in the park.
Scenery, hiking trails and beaches are abundant. But this is Lake Superior, so ice can last well into late spring and the water is plenty cold all year long.
This slideshow focuses on sites located near Munising.

Michigan Upper Peninsula - Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Miners Castle
On the shore of Lake Superior, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. It extends for 42 miles (67 km) along the shore and covers 73,236 acres (114 sq mi; 296 km2). The park offers spectacular scenery of the hilly shoreline between Munising, Michigan and Grand Marais, Michigan, with various rock formations like natural archways, waterfalls, and sand dunes. The Pictured Rocks stretch for about 15 miles along Lake Superior from Sand Point on the west to just after Spray Falls on the east.
Colorful and bold, the Pictured Rocks tower 50 to 200 feet directly from Lake Superior. The name Pictured Rocks comes from the streaks of mineral stain that decorate the face of the weather-sculpted cliffs. Sandstone cliffs of ochre, tan, and brown - sandwiched with layers of white, green, orange, and black - glisten against the cloud-streaked sky and clear waters of Lake Superior. The cliffs are composed of the Munising Formation of 500 million year old Cambrian period sandstone. The Munising Formation sits atop a Precambrian sandstone of the Jacobsville Formation. The mottled red Jacobsville Formation is the oldest rock in the park. On top of the Munising Formation is the younger Au Train Formation from the Ordovician period. The Au Train Formation is a hard sandstone and acts as a cap over the other layers. Streaks on the face of the cliffs come from the groundwater leaching out of the rock. With it come iron (red), manganese (black-white), limonite (yellow-brown), copper (pink-green) and other minerals. As the water evaporates, these minerals leave streaks of color.
Miners Castle provides a wonderful vista of the Pictured Rocks cliffs. At Sand Point, the cliffs are off in the distance.
Pictured Rock is the home of many of Michigan's waterfalls. Most of the waterfalls resulted from water running over cliffs of the Munising Formation. This lime and sandstone formation exists between Tahquamenon Falls, some 75 miles (121 km) east, to Laughing Whitefish Falls, 30 miles (48 km) miles west of the Lakeshore.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, MI - Chapel Loop Hike July 2016
The Chapel/Mosquito Loop at Pictured Rocks is possibly the best day hike in Michigan! Starting from Chapel trailhead, hike to Chapel Beach, around Grand Portal Point and over to Mosquito Beach and back to Chapel trailhead. Depending on the route you take, you can also see both Chapel Falls and Mosquito Falls. This will end up being somewhere around 12-15 miles depending on your route. It's very easy terrain with minimal ups and downs, and some of the best views anywhere in the state. Getting an overnight permit is next to impossible during the busy season unless you have advance reservations, but there's several options for camping in nearby state forest campgrounds. All are first come, first served.
I have a detailed trip report, including many pictures, GPX file of the Chapel Loop Hike here:

Hiking the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore: Hammock Camping Grand Sable to Munising
The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is probably one of the most beautiful and diverse areas I've had the opportunity to hike. This must be one of the best hikes in Michigan and it was gorgeous to go backpacking in this area. The trail from Grand Sable visitor's center to Munising visitor center is 42.4 miles long and treats you with great views of Lake Superior, dense woodland and forests and beautiful beaches. Our campsites for this trip were Au Sable East, Beaver Lake campground and Cliffs. We hammock camped each night and the mileage for the four day trip was (7.1 miles, 13.3 miles, 16.9 miles and then 5.1 miles).
One of the highlights of the trip was being able to wash up in Lake Superior. Was it cold? Yes!! I think the lower half of my body went numb after the first 2 minutes and I definitely wouldn't have tried this if the day wasn't warm.
Another highlight of the trip were the campsites. Not only were our sites great but we passed multiple others that would have been excellent. Of particular note were the Coves and Trapper's Lake camp grounds. From what I remember both had excellent water views and access to the beaches.

Pictured Rocks
Michigan Upper Peninsula 2013-06-30
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a U.S. National Lakeshore on the shore of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States.
Pictured Rocks derives its name from the 15 miles (24 km) of colorful sandstone cliffs northeast of Munising. The cliffs are up to 200 feet (60 m) above lake level. They have been naturally sculptured into shallow caves, arches, formations that resemble castle turrets, and human profiles, among others. Near Munising visitors also can view Grand Island, most of which is included in the Grand Island National Recreation Area and is preserved separately.
The U.S. Congress made Pictured Rocks the first officially-designated National Lakeshore in the United States in 1966. It is governed by the National Park Service (NPS), had 22 year-round NPS employees as of May 2006, and received 476,888 visitors in 2005.
Pictured Rocks Boat Cruises - Munising, MI - Upper Peninsula
Voted #1 boat tour in the state of Michigan by Michigan Living. Pictured Rocks Boat Cruises offers a fully-narrated scenic 2-3 hour cruise of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Unique and spectacular, is often the description passengers use when sharing their experience. The tour highlights the steep, 200-foot sandstone cliffs sculpted by ancient glaciers and painted by the mineral-rich ground water that runs down the face of the cliffs. Varying shades of brown, tan and yellow shimmer from minerals such as iron, copper and manganese, and provides a majestic vista only Mother Nature could create. Passengers enjoy breathtaking views of beautiful rock formations, beaches, bays, caves and lighthouses along the Lake Superior shoreline--you may even see an eagle in flight. Day and sunset cruises are available. All aboard!
