A day in the vast Pilliga Forest
???????? WHAT: A day in the Pilliga Forest. ???? WHERE: Just east of the town of Baradine in Western NSW. ❄ WHEN: We travelled in winter. Expect very cold mornings. Have a jacket handy. ❓❓ WHY: To see the largest remaining wild forest in NSW and see the beautiful Sculptures in the Scrub. ???? HOW: I travelled in the ever reliable little Suzuki Jimny (Suzuki Australia ) which more than managed the rough roads and sandy creek crossings. ⏰ TIME: You will need to allow a full day by the time you get there and meander about. ???? DISTANCE: I did at least 100km inside the Pilliga Forest plus to and from the forest to Coonabarabran. ???????????????? FOOD: You must take your own food and plenty of water. ???? TOILETS: There are toilets at Salt Caves and Sculptures in the Scrub. ⚠️ SAFETY: ????️ Let someone know where you are going. ☝️ Check in at the Pilliga Discovery Centre to check road conditions and get directions and a map. As I keep driving something hits the back of my car. I also kept getting a strong horrible smell coming in the jeep. I even had this sickly feeling come over me. Felt like being watched. I freaked & started to think it's time to get back to the main road.

Coonabarabran
The 2018 NSAS Field Trip took a 31-member strong group to Coonabarabran for a weekend of visits and astronomical observation and imaging.
Friday night saw us heading to the Milroy Observatory where, with the help of Donna, we were able to use their dobsonian telescopes, including a 20inch one.
I took advantage of the free Saturday morning to explore a couple of walking trails in the Warrumbungle National Park.
The afternoon was devoted to the visit of the Siding Spring Observatory where, thanks to our guide Amanda, we discovered the Faulkes Telescope South of the Las Cumbras Observatory, the I.telescope installations and, the pièce de résistance, the enormous Anglo-Australian Telescope with its 3.9m mirror.
For those of us who had brought their own telescopes, Saturday night brought a great deal of excitement and, sometimes, of disappointment and frustration when all did not work according to plan.
For those, who like me hadn’t taken their scopes with them, the awesome sight of the Milky Way in this unpolluted sky will stay in our memories long enough to make this trip well worthwhile.
L'excursion de la Northern Sydney Astronomical Society pour 2018 a amené un groupe de 31 de ses membres à Coonabarabran pour un week-end de visites et d'observation et d'imagerie astronomiques.
Vendredi soir, nous a vu à l’observatoire de Milroy où, avec l’aide de Donna, nous avons pu utiliser leurs télescopes dont un de 50cm.
Personnellement, j'ai profité du samedi matin libre pour explorer quelques sentiers de randonnée dans le parc national de Warrumbungle.
L'après-midi a été consacrée à la visite de l'Observatoire de Siding Spring où, avec l'aide de notre guide Amanda, nous avons découvert le télescope Faulkes Sud de l'observatoire de Las Cumbras, les installations de I.telescope et, la pièce de résistance, l’énorme Télescope anglo-australien avec son miroir de 3,9m.
Pour ceux d’entre nous qui avaient amené leurs télescopes, le samedi soir a suscité beaucoup d’enthousiasme et, parfois, de déception lorsque tout ne fonctionnait pas comme prévu.
Pour ceux qui comme moi n’avaient pas pris leurs télescopes avec eux, rien que de pouvoir admirer la Voie Lacté dans toute sa splendeur valait le déplacement.
Pilliga Forest – Radioactive spill
On one of the regular Pilliga Push tours through the forest in mid-march 2016 to keep an eye on Santos coal seam gas a group of students came upon this....
It didn’t look natural so we took photos and reported it to the EPA. We had a geiger counter that counted over double the normal background on a 10 minute count for this area.
The EPA did not conduct a proper investigation and misconstrued the complaint to the CCC. Who is the EPA working for? Are Santos reporting their waste from HPV's & LPD's to the government as required?

2013 Coonabarabran Bush Fires
Hills Strike Team: Made up of NSW Rural Fire Service Volunteer Firefighter from Hornsby/Ku-Ring-Gai, The Hills, and Warringah/Pittwater Districts.
We travelled up to Coonabarabran on Monday 14/Jan/13, and went straight to work as a night crew. We worked from 8pm-8am each day. Leaving on Thursday 17/Jan/13.

The Pilliga is a vast expanse of bushland, located between Narrabri and Coonabarabran in western NSW.
It is the largest forested area left west of the Great Divide, an amazing refuge area for wildlife that are in decline all around the state.
It is a truly iconic and precious place. Stretching across 500 square kilometres it bursts into flower in spring, carpeting the landscape with colour.
It is perhaps the only place left in NSW where you can look out across flat land and see only forest as far as the eye can see.
It filters the water that recharges our greatest inland water resource -- some of the sweetest water that you will ever taste lies beneath the Pilliga sandstones in aquifers of the Great Artesian Basin.
An amazing diversity of plants and animals live here, including threatened species such as the Eastern Pygmy Possum, Pilliga Mouse and Black-striped Wallaby.
But all is not well in the Pilliga. All this beauty is now threatened by the beast -- a massive coal seam gas development.
See the place for yourself. Ask yourself the question. Will you stand up for the Pilliga?

Our trip to the AAOs AAOMEGA telescope near Coonabarabran in the Warrumbungle national Park in northern New South Wales, 7 hours drive from Sydney. We had 3 nights there. Unfortunately 2 were rained out, but the one clear night was spectacular.
