Ciutadella de Menorca
Ciutadella de Menorca is a port city on the west coast of Menorca, one of the Spanish Balearic Islands. It’s known for its old quarter and medieval streets. The main square, Plaça des Born, is home to the Gothic-style City Hall and the 19th century palaces of Salort and Torre-Saura. The 14th-century Santa Maria of Ciutadella Cathedral features a huge marble altar and the baroque-style Chapel of Souls.

#CIUTADELLA (Old Town) CATHEDRAL MENORCA
1. Ciutadella
The old town of Ciutadella, wrapped around a wide square beside the pretty small port is a labyrinth of passages, archways and sudden unexpected views. On the western end of the island, with the hills of neighbouring Mallorca clearly visible on the horizon the city was founded by the Carthaginians more than two thousand years ago, and in the 9th century under Arab rule was called Medina Minurqa. It was the island’s capital until the 18th century, when the first British governor Richard Kane, transferred the island’s seat of power to Maó at the other end of the island.
Today, Ciutadella with a population of 28,000 is widely regarded as the most beautiful of Menorca’s towns, with a far more Spanish feel than the distinctly Anglo-Saxon Maó. The main square, Plaça des Born is lined with aristocratic palaces of the 18th century and beyond, around the 14th century cathedral (built on the site of the former mosque) narrow arched passageways and courtyards lead into an area which feels more African than Mediterranean.
Close by in the small port lined with fishing boats the ferry leaves each day for Mallorca, and just beyond, a long sandy strip lies between with walled gardens.
Here, on the Dia de Sant Joan– the 23rd June – the most important fiesta of the island takes place each year, with the beautiful black Menorcan horses rearing high amongst the packed crowds beneath the ancient city walls in what is regarded as one of Spain’s most vivid festivals.

Matances de Bujots (Killing of the Rag Dolls), Ciutadella de Menorca, Spain: Easter Sunday 2015
This is without a doubt one of the most bizarre rituals that I have ever witnessed. On a sleepy Easter Sunday in the Menorcan city of Ciutadella de Menorca, the silence is shattered when the church bells strike 12 O'Clock midday by men with shotguns shooting at effigies that have been 'hung' lynch mob style from the lamp-posts in the streets.
Bujot means 'rag doll', a pejorative word to indicate someone without any personality. In Ciutadella, the Matances de Bujots (killing of the rag dolls) is the occasion to poke fun at the politicians and make a spectacle of any situation which has come in for criticism.
There is no record as to its origin, although it most probably comes from an ancient custom where they marched a straw doll around the streets of Ciutadella, which they then burnt in the Plaça des Born. A photograph taken in 1883 which hangs in the building of the Cercle Artístic, shows this straw doll being jostled around the town.
Neither is its symbology very clear, although it seems to indicate that it was a festive way to end Lent, a period of darkness and privations.
This film begins with the calm before the storm, with some shots around the centre of Ciutadella de Menorca, before the shooting action begins. The effigy is shot at for several minutes by a posse of men with shotguns. Eventually the effigy catches fire and falls to the ground - to the delight and applause of the surrounding crowd.
